I just bought a backwards compatible ps3 and basically missed out on the ps1 and ps2 as well. So as the title says, I need some input on the best games I missed.

I will buying most of them on the psn store but I'm willing to buy the disc version if they don't have it. For starters I will be getting the ones that are constantly talked about like ff7, God of war, and Ico.

So if there are any gems you enjoyed for those two consoles, let me know so I can enjoy them too.

Not sure if any of these are available...

Syphon Filter series
Legend of Legaia
Jet Moto
SOCOM US Navy Seals
Soviet/Nuclear Strike

I enjoyed the Ratchet & Clank games, though they might not be to your tastes. Ico, of course.

The early Twisted Metal games were a blast, but probably feel mind-blowingly outdated now.

By the way, the PS3 has HD-updated versions available for some of these (Ratchet, MGS, GoW) -- I'd get those versions, if I were you.

PS2 -
  1. Dragon Quest VII: Journey of the Cursed King. In my opinion the best game of that generation and one of my all time favorites.
  2. Shadow of the Colossus. Comes in a very close second.

although not an outright recommendation (because i haven't played them), Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway for 360/ps3 was a terrific first person/squad based WWII shooter; that series has 2 predecessors on ps2 which i've read are even better. i've been wanting to play them for so long (not enough to buy a cheap ass ps2 though, i'm sure it'll come to DD/gakai at some point)

PS1
metal gear solid
syphon filter 1 and 2
legend of dragoon
legend of legaia
legend of mana
chrono cross
chrono trigger
breathe of fire
suikoden 2
harvest moon back to nature
megaman legends 1 and 2
castelvania symphony of the night
silent hill
resident evil 1,2 and 3
parasite eve 1 and 2
clocktower
tenchu 1 and 2
crash bandicoot warped

ps2
mgs2 and 3
shadown of the collosus
Ico
god of war 1 and 2
devil may cry 1 and 3
tenchu 3
silent hill 2,3 and 4
sly cooper
ratchet and clank
jak and daxter
the suffering
time splitters

PS1
- Intelligent Qube
- Castlevania SotN
- RE 2
- Tenchu

PS2
- Ace Combat 4
- Twisted Metal Black
- Manhunt

Thanks everyone.

I'll check out all the HD remakes (including the newly released kingdom hearts) and opt for those instead whenever possible. Most of those I've heard, but alot (like manhunt) are new to me.

Judging from all the games that been brought up, I think I will have a LONG time before I even start on the PS3 catalog.

@Mercylack

The Suffering, I was just thinking bout that game the other day. I loved it back in the day, wonder how it holds up today...
I actually played that for the first time just a few months back (on o.g. Xbox). It was pretty good. Not great enough to keep in my collection (I only keep the very best of the best [imo, of course]), but still, it was good.

That's awesome @alfaomega, I recently started playing the PS2 library as well. There are sooo many excellent games, I'm not even going to bother naming them all. What I do, and what I'd recommend, is go to a site like gamerankings.com or metacritic.com and take a look through the list of all the highest critically-reviewed/rated games on the system. As you browse, take note of all those titles that appeal to you, in the genres that you like, etc., and go from there. You'll be off to a roaring start then, and it'll also remind you of games you'd previously heard were awesome but might have forgotten about. Those two sites also link to the websites with the written (or video) reviews for each game, so pretty much all the resources are right at your fingertips.

Oh yeah I wouldn't keep the Suffering either, however, I would def. recommend playing it though. It was a solid horror/Sci-fi FPS for its time.
