Hard is a relative term, a lot of reviewers aren't very good at games to begin with so taking their word for it can be a bit tough. The game itself isn't overwhelmingly hard it's the length of time you have to play to get any progress saved that is the issue IMO. They could totally give the option of saving for people who want it or a setting with saves that only happen the way they do now. I couldn't care less how someone else decides to play a game although I do find it funny when people talk about playing on the hardest difficult level like it's some kind of brag. I suspect they are the people that will go buy a box of magnums and a bag of rubber bands together lol.
As in loading back your save if you die? That changes the game into something different. Going back to the start is the whole point.

I agree with this.

The whole dying and go back to level 1 biome (until you pass a certain point) is part of the game's charm. The more you play, the better you'll get and that is the point of the game which is a rogue-lite/action-adventure TPS. You'll start to figure out how to fight enemies, cheese some parts, learn what you have to do, figure out what build you like etc.

The game is even easier now than when it was launched after they patched it when some gamers were citing difficulties. I beat the game on my 2nd try at launch just from pausing and rest mode-ing the game. Not entirely sure what save progress/point they added since then but I was so hooked on trying to beat the game it didn't really bother me. I can understand people who play multiple games at a time having some hesitancy since they don't want to be tied into one game the whole time.

Once I got to the second biome I had a new appreciation for it, simply because it was so different from biome 1. I haven't had time to dive back into it much, but I definitely like what is there.

I do wish there were more permanent upgrades, like taking weapons with you, etc. It feels like permanent character growth is limited at this stage, but maybe it picks up later.

With the new update out today, I decided to hop back in the game a few days ago. I really enjoyed it at release but only played up to maybe half way through biome 3. Without a save mode and the fact I move between games too often meant it was hard to keep a long play through going and worry about being forced to keep playing the game even if I didn't want to at that moment. I did play it again after they added save mode but wasn't in the mood then. Have to say though I am addicted to the game again and just trying to get back up to speed on the gameplay.

Ended up playing for almost 3 hours last night just on the base game. Had some god rolls on upgrades. Had level 15 weapon proficiency and almost 2 full health bars. Got my ass handed to me by the boss though.

This game is one I put in a category of at release enjoying it but giving up quick. Then coming back to it months or years later and falling in love with it. For example Soulsborne games it took Nioh for me to understand the genre and start enjoying it.

I despised Horizon Zero Dawn at release. Shelved it after an hour. 5 years later I tried it again and couldn’t put it down.

Finally found some new gear to open up some previously inaccessible areas.... Now to figure out how to get back to the first 3 areas. I got pretty far into the water world and then completely ass blasted by a mini boss lol

I hated those in the 6th biome. They are freakishly scary to go up against the first time.

Beat the game last night. The carbine with leech rounds are OP. I also had whatever consumable gives you additional healing so beat the final boss on my first try. I'll most likely go for the Platinum on this game as the rest of the trophies are just mopping up collectibles while enjoying the great game play.

In this 2022 Visual Effects Summit session, Housemarque & Playstation Studios’ Risto Jankkila and Sharman Jagadeesan discuss how Housemarque used their programmable particle system to create key vfx features in Returnal. Covering aspects such as volumetric fog driven by real-time fluid simulations and usage of particle hierarchies for character effects such as tentacles.

Just started playing this. Only couple of hours in but I'm liking it.

Does the environment have more diversity or is it basically the same the whole game?

Even though the levels change and what not the environment definitely lacks some diversity, really liked the movement and the story was interesting.

Yeah nah I dont have the time for a game like this lol. Love the gameplay but got to the boss after a good 30 min of farming, got him nearly down, then died. Start all over. Almost nothing carries over to make next run easier. Those are sadly the only roguelikes I can play. I can’t image what it’ll be like when I get to Biome 3 or 4 and die and start all over.

Can’t do it! Will watch a full playthrough instead. This is a game I’d grind away at in my younger years where I has infinite free time.

You sound like me. I'm waiting for a good sale on PC, so it'll be awhile. Then I'll give it a try.

It’s a great game. Just not a style of game that is conducive to my lifestyle these days unfortunately. Biggest issue is it doesnt really get easier run after run like other roguelikes.
