Microsoft to Purchase of Former PlayStation Major Franchise to Make Exclusive on Xbox Series X
By Viral MVP May 24, 2020

Movie. . . Viral. . .
Dating back to 2015, Hideo Kojima left Konami, after an apparent falling out behind-the-scenes. While neither party has spoke on their issues public, Kojima immediately partnered up with Sony to upstart several new IPs, including Death Stranding on PlayStation 4 last fall.

While the title was a visual masterpiece, that didn’t resonate with gameplay and innovation for the general masses to catch on. Well, it’s being brought to our attention that a former major title of Kojima is on the verge of being purchased by Microsoft.

The Big M is readying a multi-million purchase Metal Gear Solid, as they want it to release exclusively on the Xbox Series X. This would likely partner the MGS series with Halo and Gears of War as their big-three of first-party titles.

Considering Halo is set to launch with the Series X in a few months, and we just saw Gears of War 5 last year, Microsoft is looking to get out the next feature project starring Solid Snake before 2022. We last saw the franchise back in 2015, with the release of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes & The Phantom Pain.

Since those IPs are owned directly by Konami, we could also see the return of Silent Hill, if they have success with the first MGS on XSX. Let us know in the comments what you think.

They don’t need it imo....perfect dark would easily fill that position. Already has a wacky story. Even more wacky if you wanted since you have aliens lol.

Metal Gear kind of jumped the shark for me...but that's just for me. If true, would be a big get in terms of establishing worldwide credibility. If they could bring in Kojima's independent studio for a game while prepping the future lead for a handoff (as we know Kojima doesn't want to do it longterm), would be a big move potentially on par with buying Rare back in the day. It's not about a move like this paying itself back. More about establishing credibility worldwide. MGS is one of maybe 10 (or less) IPs that sell millions in the East, Europe and North America.

At this point I'd take just about any other company than Konami to hold the IP.
I do think that whoever buys it should let Kojima make it though... he might be the most pretentious guy in the business but there's a reason Metal Gear is so beloved and it isn't really the gameplay tbh.

I hate the idea of this. The thought of taking a series that has been on a platform for decades and thenn making it exclusive to another platform is s***ty. I hated it when got timed exclusivity to Tomb Raider aswell.

Dear god, no. Money could be spent better in my opinion. I’ve never seen the attraction to Metal Gear to be honest, and why would you do this anyway? MG has cultivated it’s user base mostly on the PlayStation brand at this point. I don’t believe that it has a strong enough pull to bring long-time PlayStation fans over to Xbox though.

But it’s origins trace back to the Microsoft’s MSX, they even published metal gear solid (and final fantasy VII) on PC :p

I’ll be ok with it if they start a new company, preferably based in Japan (in my world two, for aid), and let those who worked under Kojima but left to other/western studios (ie Yoji Shinkawa, Kazuma Jinnouchi, etc)...

but honestly where can mgs go from where it ended, metal gear revolution reimagined remix’er?

I'm not a huge metal gear fan, too convoluted for my taste, but the series doesn't work without Kojima. Konami tried Metal Gear with out Kojima and pooped out Metal Gear Survive.

Frankly, Ive not been a fan of MGS since MGS2, but this would be a HUGE get if true. I could also see Coalition given the reigns to reignite the franchise.

Why do you think this would be a huge get? Honestly, I think they wouldn’t get much for their investment in this outside of empty IP addition missing the elements that make it what it is and more likely, quite a bit of ill will and accusations of money-hatting. If they want to buy an established IP, money would much better spent on something that was well received but has been somewhat dormant for a while that they can revitalize. Splinter Cell and Dino Crisis come to mind as examples. Even more so, they should invest in the revitalization of their own IPs that have been dormant for a while.

I think MGS could probably be given a pretty competent reboot to make it more approachable. Plus alot of people still love the franchise - at least the main character - and have for decades. MGS is still a relevant and current name in gaming today. I would also prefer Splinter Cell more than MGS but I highly doubt that'll happen.

As far as old MS IP's, I just dont see it. Maybe a couple but current market trends in such a saturated market of games essentially using same old ideas with new paint and new names, doesnt leave alot of room for alot of the older IP's these days. Gaming has grown up tremendously since OG Xbox. I can see for nostalgic purposes or a passion project but those games rarely see alot of success. Thats just me....

Maybe they don't need to bring them to Xbox. Maybe it would be to entice PS fans to use their streaming service.

To be fair... Rising showed others could make a MGS game

MGSV sold over 6 million copies between September 2015 and December 2015.... this IP isn't some washed up has been, a MGSVI exclusive would be huge.

Don’t think anyone thinks it’s “washed up”. Those are strong numbers, again on an already cultivated user base and platform. Curious, what is that in reference to the reported number of worldwide PS4 units sold?
