Ryse Son of Rome

You guys really need to STFU about this game. I held off buying it at launch because I could only afford 3 launch titles, so I'm getting it as an Xmas gift from family. Won't be able to play it until the 23rd, and all of your praise for this game is driving me crazy!

Have we mentiond how fun and pretty it is?

I was playing Skyrim tonight and I really really wanted to do some execution moves on the enemies.

A sequel could happen properly given what we saw from the story. Without giving too much away.

Have to say, Crytek did an interesting story for once. Thumbs up for Ryse.

I bought it as well. Picked up a digital download from my PC and in the morning it was loaded onto my Xbox. I have played the campaign almost half way through and also put enough time in arena (solo) to buy one pack of boosters. I don't know what you guys are taking about because this game SUCKS....

...you in :) I couldn't stop playing. The combat isn't as easy as its simplistic nature would lead you to believe and you will definitely pay if you try to button mash. You have to learn a rhythm and when it clicks it is beautiful dance of violence and blood. The only real negative I have with the gameplay so far is the projectile aiming. It is very cumbersome and drags an otherwise perfect experience down.

I will also echo everything that has been said before about the graphics. Scenery is jaw dropping and the characters look amazing - especially the faces and eyes. I have never seen a game do facial expressions and lifelike eyes like this game.

I am not a story person and would rate 90% of all video game prose as utter trash so I am shocked that reviewers were lambasting the work Crytek has done here. Granted the gorgeous visuals don't hurt, but so far the story has been really good. Seriously, its not ground breaking but compared to the trite s*** that most developers put out there this is a really well done story that you actually enjoy sitting through. The game has a nice balance between the story parts and the game parts.

It has an untouchable feature that I haven't seen in any non cartridge based game. From entire system start-up to continuing the saved campaign in approx 10sec. I'm hoping all titles in the future are this quick. Forza5 and COD ghosts always load like current gen titles. COD-G loses my login every time even though kinetic has been flawless recognizing me.

The chapter I did last night was fantastic, by far my favorite so far, I forget which chapter it was but I think I have 3 left. Without giving anything away it was in the dark woods with the guys with fire. The level looked great, loved the atmosphere and that boss fight was beautiful!

Just finished that level again before this post. The music and atmosphere are epic a true AAA title.

I dont replay single player games often but I will be with this one and that level possibly a few times on higher difficulties

I played through about 70% of the game on normal difficulty yesterday. It's definitely repetitive, but I've really enjoyed it. The levels and graphics have been awesome, and gameplay is enjoyable. I'm also liking the story quite a bit so far.

Has anyone got themselves into any awkward situations with their family / roommates yelling "fire volley!" at their screen?

Give the game a go on the hardest level. It is a new level of challenge. The enemies deal lots more damage. Also, your execution timing has to be spot on. The rewards go down significantly. Also, perfect hits and blocks are much harder to get. If you like the challenge, it is worth giving the game another go.

Yeah, one thing about this game is... on the easier levels it can be repetitive. Playing it on the hardest, it's another world. Almost like those were the levels of difficulty the game was meant for.

I said before playing the game most reviews were done at an event, i'd imagine most reviewers played on easy hence the low scores. Deserves a 7.5 minimum

I'm playing it now, and it's my first play through and i'm on the hardest difficulty. It still seems pretty repetitive to me. The combat doesn't seem to go anywhere and after the first hour I feel like I've seen everything. I thought i would unlock more execution or something but i guess not. Regardless I'm actually enjoying the game a lot and I think it's pretty fun but I definitely can understand why people say the combat is repetitive and why it scored so low.

They definitely could have made the combat a bit more in depth though.

Beat the game once then play it on Legendary. Yeah it gets to a whole 'nother level. Executions give you very little boost of whatever you wanted. The damage inflicted on you in just ridiculous. And you'll have to time the blocks perfectly too. You'll see, then come back.

That still doesn't make the combat more diverse and in depth. I mean you have only 2 attack buttons and you end up spamming them to do the same attacks over and over. Even if you hold the attack button down you do the very same heavy attack animation every single time. It's just shallow. I'm still enjoying it though and I hope the game does well enough for a sequel of some sorts. I'm sure they could make it even better if given the chance.

I could see this series going the route of Elder Scrolls, make it an action-loot-rpg type game but with the hack and slash gameplay, much like a Diablo game is.

Still going to wait for a price drop on this one.

I think you'll see it hit $49 more frequently, I've been seeing it on sale sometimes on Amazon for that.

Yeah, I reckon come the end of Jan 2014, it might be around the 30 euro mark second hand.

Yeah, just be prepared to die... A lot! And keep that roll handy because two guys will swing on you at the same time, and you can't block them both. It's super important to manage the enemies position. I'm on the last level on Legendary
fighting Comodus
. It can get frustrating. I had to go into arena mode and do some killin' to warm up.

They also do a lot more wind-up attacks which constantly throws me off. If you don't get a centurion or higher execution, the reward is useless. Love this game!

As far as combat variety- I agree it could do more, but the core is great, and the crux is more about how to manage numbers over doing some flashy combo. I have nothing but high hopes for this as a series :) Maybe the Medieval sequel will offer more in weapons and variety.

I still think it's a perfect launch game, and I haven't gotten sick of it at all...

If I were to get the game this Christmas would I be missing out anything important since it will most likely not be a Day One Edition?

a few exclusive multiplayer thong outfits and a roman candle gun.

I think you received a sword or something for co op. Nothing you will really miss. I had a real blast playing through this game, hope you like it as much as I did.

Sword and a map, I believe.

So I feel like I'm always doing the same executions. I know evironmental ones are contextual, but are the rest random? I random watched one of Sheep Shagger's Ryse vids last night, and saw him do an execution I'd never seen (threw a guy in the air and cut his leg off). Am I not timing things well, or is it just luck of the draw?
