Discussions about comparative console and game sales go here.

For anyone wondering why this thread is labelled 1.6 when the last one was 1.1 -- 1.1 was actually the 5th thread on the subject. So I labelled this one 1.6.

Must have missed 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5. Lucky me.

:tounge:

Sales comparison so far is like Bayern Munich vs Dortmund in the bundesliga.

Gaps are so wide & widening that it's anti climax.

Hopefully ms put on a better fight in the holidays & beyond.

That reference went completely over my head. I'm guessing it has something to do with boxing. In which case: MS will land a few punches in November.

Amazon Nov 2014 so far:
7, 25, 46, 55, 59 Xbox
15, 49 PS4

Xbox SKUs are moving down the ranks but still ahead of PS4.

Black Friday deals:
PS4 GTA V+TLOU = effectively $300 ($400-60-40)
PS4 LBP 3+Lego Batman 3 = effectively $280 ($400-60-60)
Xbox AC Unity + AC4 = effectively $240 ($330-60-30)

PS4's BF deals are good, but probably not enough to catch up.

USA is going to be a tough fight this gen at least in November and December.

I think this has relevance here

A SuperData report shows that digital downloads on consoles increased by 12 percent since last year.

One out of every five copies of Destiny was sold digitally, according to a study by SuperData Research.

That's significantly higher than the year's other big titles, which on average sold 12 percent of total units via digital downloads on consoles.

According to the report, Destiny also accumulated 9.5 million registered users.

Across the industry, digital console sales reached $96 million, and the digital games market overall reached a combined total of $957 in October, up 12 percent from the same month last year. SuperData attributes this increase to the adoption of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and major publishers getting behind digital distribution.

"For the holiday season we conservatively forecast the share of direct-to-consoles downloads of full games to double, as consumers seek to avoid the inconvenience of having to wait for delivery or stand in line,"SuperData said. "That said, GameStop has so far proved to be well-positioned to capture a piece of this uptick in digital games revenue. We do, however, anticipate lower-than-expected game sales over the winter break for online retailers like Amazon."

One in five is not bad. Popularity is certainly growing for DD.

Meaning game charts are a bit pointless now.

So 80% of sales are pointless? And that study was only for Destiny , you can't extrapolate that to all games just yet. Next gen is where digital downloads would be much more significant. The bulk of sales in today's market is still physical.

Meaning game charts are a bit pointless now.

Not pointless, but certainly open up a gray area. For example the Forza Horizon 2 demo had a point where you could easily buy the game digitally and get a discount as a returning player. I bit on that, my 1st and only digital purchase thus far and I am sure many others did the same. So while many titles may average 20% digital, a deal like on FH2 or maybe an RPG like Dragon Age where a consumer figures they will be playing a lot so digital ease makes sense could produce skewed sales. Same for bundles. It does potentially make relying solely on hard copy data problematic.

Sales data isn't pointless but as I've said many times before, digital needs to start getting tracked. Digital could play a role in one console version beating out another with the increase in people buying games digitally as well as console exclusive digital game plans.

Anyway, the COD Xbox One bundle is currently sold out on a good number of stores online and stores are changing their regular Xbox One SKUs into AC Unity bundles, therefore causing the regular Xbox One SKUs to be hard to find (which is a good thing). The PS4 GTA+Last of Us bundle will do well but I wonder if things would have been easier for Sony if they would have just made digital codes for the games, therefore causing the current regular PS4 SKUs to easily turn into the free game bundles if they were sold out (like what MS is doing); Makes it a bit harder to keep up with demand.

Really, I could have sworn Shipped = sold to MS & Sony.

Sorry but both MS and Sony don't make much from the console sale to the store. the real money is from the online and game sales so sold to customers is far more important. sold to stores does not mean s***.

if the console is sold at a loss, the profit is made up by the amount of games, online and accessories sold to that consumer. if the console doesn't sell to consumers, then it's services starve off as there is noone there to take advantage of them which helps replenish it's financial channel. so I have to agree with TD here.

Just want to say congrats to Sony on a successful first year with the PS4 and many more to come. Almost 15 million PS4s sold in a year is amazing. Greatness awaits.

well I seem to remember both were not selling at a loss this time around. Now with MS that may have changed with the different SKU's and price cuts.

The GTA+ Last of us bundle would been really attrative to me if I didnt already have a PS4. I think it will do well.

(Some Of) The Big Stuff:
The PS4 may have beaten the Xbox One in October, but since Microsoft cut the Xbox One price by $50earlier this month, the tide has turned. Microsoft announced this week that the Xbox One has been outselling the PS4 for two straight weeks now in the United States. The company cited excitement over the $50 price cut and the array of Xbox One bundles as fueling the turnaround. Microsoft also announced this week that it's now shipped 10 million Xbox Ones, behind PS4's 13.5 million. But with the busy holiday shopping season still in front of us, can the Xbox One finally catch up to and maybe overtake the PS4?

More talk about resolution and frame rate this week. 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight is aiming for graphical parity across all platforms, developer Rocksteady Studios announced this week. Final specifications aren't locked down yet--the game doesn't launch until June 2015, after all--so it's too early to say if it will be 1080p/30fps or some other variation.

I could have sworn that original statement said that they were close to shipping 10 million. hugh..... I guess close to shipping means it was already shipped. in addiction to that, we still don't know the total ww figures. last time I checked, the gap was over 5 million, could have been 6 million. this PR report as well as many article like this one has it that the gap has been closed at over a million units in two weeks is very suspicious since the states is the only place where the console made any gain this month. so the global total should be much different even still.

I thought MS had a pretty good opportunity this month to pull in a few users since they had some pretty good advantages this month. my concern though is whether they can keep that momentum going after the holiday.

Are you talking about MS closing the 1 million+ sales gap in the US? If so, I haven't seen any PR or articles to suggest that, including the one you're referencing. They've outsold Sony for two weeks, but no one knows what the differential is.

Chart-Track said 52 per cent of Unity's sales were on PS4, with Xbox One taking 46 per cent and PC two per cent. It should be noted that Chart-Track does not keep tabs on download sales.

Everyone I know actually only buys digital btw because of sharing, which is about 30 copies.

Also anyone arguing Sold Through vs Sold In remember this, Sony has no accurate way to track sold through numbers it's all guesstimate.
