Why would i try a poll?

Because you're the one who suggested it.

Resetera would be a better place for you to post that type of poll.

I don't visit Resetera.

Power doesn't win sales.

Right. I'm sure the next gen is on the way simply because people are getting tired of the color and shape of the current consoles.

Nintendo can make a 2-5 x upgraded Switch and get many potential XBV/PS5 buyers.

If the upgraded Switch is 5 times as powerful as the current Switch, you might have half an argument. However, remember you're arguing that they are stealing customers from Xbox or PS5, so not buying those machines. I don't see that happening.

Switch outsells the most powerful console and the Pro...

Yes, a lot of people seem to like it -- as a secondary console.

Exactly what I was saying, thanks. Poach, is the operative word. There aren't many people switching over to Nintendo and skipping one of the other two.

Right.

I forgot to mention, though I suppose it's clear to most people, that one of the main reasons "Switch only" is an unpopular choice is because of the 3rd party situation. Although some hardcore Nintendo fanatics might be happy with JUST playing Nintendo exclusives, if all you own is a Switch, you're very limited in terms of your ability to play all the multiplatform titles that come out (which of course are the bulk of what most people play). You're stuck with a restricted library of third party games and inferior ports.

It really doesn't make much sense to own only a Switch console, unless you're really in love with Nintendo exclusives and have little interest in third-party games and no interest in Sony or MS exclusives. I don't think there are a lot of hardcore gamers like that. There are probably some hardcore Nintendo guys like that, but those wouldn't be "poaches," since they are already committed to Nintendo no matter what.

Ok, I feel like I've analyzed this enough.

NPD results for November.

Compared to last year:
Switch: +75%
PS4: -13%
XBO: -3%

What that means:

PS4 ~1475k
SW ~1355k
XB1 ~1340k

So, a good month for all 3, with Switch in particular way up over last year. PS4 was #1, but only by nose. All 3 placed landed within a 100K or so of each other.

Huh you said earlier people buy switch as a second console.
Being that switch outsells Xbox every month...its obviously chosen by many instead.
Switch also outsells the PS4 on occasion . But it doesn’t matter as Switch is gen 9. We will have to see how PS and Xbox sell compared to the Switch when they release their gen 9 machines.

The X and the Pro are much more powerful than the Switch and yet....Switch does in fact outsell them.

The Xbox is outsold often by the Switch and at times so is the PS4.

Both of the launch consoles been available way longer than the Switch but we can't say switch is mainly bought as a secondary console because it doesn't lose much(if at all) to the Xbox which has been available longer.

You can go on and on but you have zero proof that people aren't choosing switch as a main console nor have you shown proof people won't choose switch/pro/new Nintendo console as a main console over PS5/XBV.

Continue if you must

All I ever want to talk about is game mechanics but noooooo, we have to listen to this crap all the time. Graphics, which gen is which, and sales talk over and over and over...Is everyone here in the 5th grade?!

That's irrelevant to what we were discussing.

I can't follow that reasoning at all.

I didn't say I had "proof," I offered some data and reasoning, to which you've responded with ... blather.

Fwiw, I don't really give two sh-ts whether the Switch poaches next-gen console sales or not. I came home wound up from work, with my head churning. I discharged some of that energy on the Switch issue. I was just distracting myself. It was just a nice, simple puzzle for my mind to chew on, rather than the complicated one it had been chewing on earlier.

Then ban yourself from the SALES thread.

NPD YTD, going into December:

PS4: 4.53 m.
NSW: 3.86 m.
XB1: 3.43m.

We'll see if Switch overtakes PS4 in the final lap. December is always a strong month for Nintendo, but that's a pretty big gap to close (700K or so).

PlayStation classic did 120k in Japan. Not even half of what the SNES mini did

"Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling video game system of this hardware generation through 21 months, according to The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. From its launch in March 2017 through November 2018, Nintendo Switch has sold more than 8.7 million units, outpacing U.S. sales of all other current-generation systems at the same point in their life cycles."

“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”

The following data from Nintendo of America is specific to the U.S. only:

Some data to support that... I ran a poll at GAF, asking what combination of consoles people owned. Of the 273 people responding, only 1.8% -- less than 2% -- owned only the Switch. Almost every Switch owner also owned a PS4 and/or Xbox One.

Not surprising, especially on a gaming enthusiast site. I'm guessing most people who are "only switch" owners are probably kids who's parents like the safe content or as you said people who only really like Nintendo games.

Yes.

I also think a lot of Switch sales are coming from handheld gamers -- specifically from 3DS owners who are now jumping to Switch as their next handheld. 3DS is still selling okay (6 m. globally last year), but it's way down over the past few years. So it looks to me as if a lot of Switch sales are coming from these handheld/portable gamers. After all, there is no real competition in this area. Nintendo has that niche sewn up tight.

So, if you're someone who is primarily a portable/handheld gamer, owning only a Switch would make sense.

Switch is a hybrid. It's clear that portability is one of its main appeals. That's why Nintendo designed it that way. It stands to reason that the portability function would capture the attention (and sales) of people who prefer to game on the go.

It's true that people who play games on both phones and Switch are not "Switch only" in the strict sense, but I was using "Switch only" in reference to the earlier discussion, which was framed in terms of Switch 'poaching' sales from next gen Xbox or PS5. Smartphone gaming didn't really enter into that.

Was also a heavy part of their advertising before and during launch

Going alllll the way back to when the Switch was 1st shown....
How was it shown?

Here let me help.

It was shown in console form and then it converts into portable mode.
It's a home console that can be taken on the go. Saying otherwise is wrong and you can continue going nowhere in doing so.

It's a hybrid, Val. Why do you think Nintendo designed the Switch to be something that could be played on the go? Just as some kind of secondary afterthought? Of course not. That was a central part of its appeal. Nintendo has a huge handheld audience. Bridging the two modes was a great move, especially for them.

As for that commercial, if you watch it, you'll notice an interesting pattern in how much time they spend featuring each mode. Here's how it goes, roughly:

- 10 seconds spent using it as home console, followed by 60 seconds on using it as a portable.
- 10 seconds spent using it as a home console, followed by 40 seconds using it as a portable.
- 10 seconds spent using it as a home console, followed by 60 seconds using it as a portable.

Even in the commercial you're pointing to, Nintendo spent a lot more time advertising the portability than the home console aspect.

Anyway, my point, which is probably getting lost, is that a significant chunk of Switch's success is probably due to people who are primarily handheld gamers buying it.

I'm thinking of many gamers in Japan, for instance, who seem to love handhelds but don't buy home consoles all that much. The Switch is a huge hit in Japan. Over 20% of Switch's total global sales come from Japan alone. You can't deny the role of the handheld mode in that success.

Of course with the 1st ever console on the go they would focus on showing this a lot in the video.

20% isn't close to its largest market plus while i agree the Japanese enjoy its portables we can't say all of that 20% are portable luving gamers which makes that % even smaller.

Still think Nintendo primary console loyalists are the biggest buyers of the Switch.
