Hmmm, makes one wonder how the live ap will work on other platforms, will you need an Xbox to stream the games you own or simply just own them and stream it via there servers to mobile/switch? How will those numbers be taken into account? Feels like next gen will be another transitioning period, by extension of the current gen, in how the consumer reacts to such a shift.
Definitely. I dont think you'll need to have an Xbox to stream you own, but you may need to be a Live member. The shift is happening as we speak.

I still think the engagement and software numbers will take center stage next gen.

Being that PSN alone brought in more than all of MS's gaming division it shows that the two go hand in hand, the more hardware you have the more you'll bring in through online/services etc. As long as you are making money that's all that really matters but selling hardware is the gateway to the rest of it. I just hope first party devs don't adopt the EA/2K mindset of launching a fairly barebones game and continually adding small things and charging extra for them. I know 3rd parties are unlikely to stop doing that but first party gets to charge for online play and gets a cut of every game sold etc so they have other sources of revenue.

Both will still be important. But if streaming takes off the way it looks like its going to, hardware wont be the only gateway. Streaming wont take over completely but I think its going to be a viable option for those who dont want a console. Next gen will probably rock 5 -6 years? By the end, streaming will be a pretty big deal by then. By that time, who knows..

I'm still skeptical of streaming, so far the little bit of 5G that has been deployed hasn't lived up to the promises made and that's one of the major things the people who are championing streaming are using as the basis for their enthusiasm. I think it will be a viable option but it shouldn't be the main way people game, at least not with where tech is now and in the foreseeable future.

I just can't get into MH, the controls just feel a bit floaty to me and I just didn't have any fun when I tried it. I'm glad others are enjoying it even if I can't figure out why lol.
Yeah, I can't get into it either. I bought it on sale and I still regret it. I must be missing something about that game. It feels old and clunky. Ugly too.

I really enjoyed my time with it. Definately wasn't looker, looked more like a last-gen remaster. But the gameplay was fun. Builds were plentiful and have huge variation.

So the latest count seems to be PS4 94 m, Xbox 41 m. The source for the first number is Sony, the second is Zhuge. That's 2.3 to 1, for those of us who like ratios. I'm assuming both those numbers have the same endpoint, which I'm not sure about, so take that with a grain of salt.

Xbox One was at 39.1 million in March of 2018 according to IHS Market analyst. If that were the case, that means that Xbox sold 900k between April and December, worldwide. Xbox sold just under a million in the US alone in December according to NPD.

which=6.5 million sold in 2018.
The denial is real here though.

Never heard of them. I looked them up, and they appear to pump out estimates for every industry under the sun. They don't specialize in the game industry. They estimated high, compared to most other observers/trackers. Wouldn't be the first time. They also appear to have reported fewer PS4s sold than Sony themselves had previously announced, which doesn't exactly speak highly of their intelligence network. Analysts are often highly paid for generating half-assed estimates.

I'd trust Zhuge over that. He's been doing this for a decade or more, and he's focused on this sort of game industry data. He tracks it as closely as he can and reports very carefully, since his livelihood and reputation depend on it.

That said, he could be a million or two off. Who knows. The important point is: Sony is winning, nee ner, nee ner.

2 to one is about par for the course, so makes sense.
40 mil is nothing to sneeze at though. Not as high as before, certainly, but it's been an uphill battle since launch.

UK top 10. Physical only.

Top 10

1. Far Cry: New Dawn
2. Metro: Exodus
3. Red Dead Redemption 2
4. Jump Force
5. FIFA 19
6. Resident Evil II
7. New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
8. Kingdom Hearts III
9. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
10. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Crackdown 3 was 13th only managing around 4,000 units

Although Far Cry managed to top the charts, it isn't an especially impressive opening week. The game's launch week sales are 86.5 per cent down over last year's Far Cry 5. Of course, this is a spin-off Far Cry title, and so the comparison isn't overly fair. Yet even compared to 2016's Far Cry Primal (the previous spin-off), sales are a fraction of what we'd typically expect (Far Cry Primal sold almost four times as many units in its first week as New Dawn has).

60 per cent of Far Cry: New Dawn sales came on PS4, 39 per cent on Xbox One, with the rest on PC (physical sales only).

A company that will likely be feeling happier with the result this week is Deep Silver. Metro Exodus missed out on No.1 by just 2,000 units. Yet more significantly, the game has posted a better opening week than 2013's Metro Last Light (released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC). This result is even more impressive when you consider the growth of digital sales in the six years between the two titles (digital game sales are not counted in this data).

Launch physical sales for Metro Exodus are almost 50 per cent higher than Last Light. 57 per cent of Metro Exodus sales came on PS4.

Next up in terms of new releases is Bandai Namco's Jump Force at No.4. Its a strong opening performance for the fighting game, and continues an impressive few weeks for the publisher (following recent strong sales of Tales Of and Ace Combat). The game performed best on PS4, accounting for 76 per cent of the game's launch sales.

The most disappointing launch of the week belongs to Microsoft's Crackdown 3, which only made No.13. The game's launch sales are barely 10 per cent of what Crackdown 2 managed in 2010. Of course, the industry was very different back then. Xbox 360 was the market leading console, digital sales were not as significant as they are today (again, only physical is counted here) and Crackdown 3 will likely have picked up a fair few users via the Xbox Game Pass subscription service (which isn't included here).

Ouch for Crackdown. Good thing MS is full of money. They can take a huge financial loss like that and shrug it off. Still, it's got to hurt. The damage to reputation might be just as significant as the financial pain.

Re. Metro Exodus vs. Far Cry sales, one thing the article doesn't mention is that Far Cry is a $40 game, whereas Exodus is $60. So Exodus is really #1, in terms of actual money earned.

Borderlands 2 ~190k
Destiny 417k

Destiny 2 175k
Anthem ~42k

Seems like the most apt comparison there would be Destiny. It's doing about 10% of Destiny and 25% of Destiny 2.

That's without digital, and it's just one week in one territory, but it's not promising.

And doing less than ME: Andromeda is kind of ...
