An overall average series. They basically killed themselves. When it first launched 5-6 years ago it was something fresh. Games 2 and 3 seem to be worse in gameplay, plus Capcom has never really promoted the series a lot. Even for LP1, it never had a ton of promotion, it just kind of sold itself as the endless big shooters we all know now weren't really out yet. And since then, sports games have got better, all the R* and Besthesda games picked up steam etc... LP kind of just did nothing.

One thing I will never understand is how game companies don't try promoting their games more. In the internet age, a game can pick up steam as long as the dev churns out gameplay vids, Q&A sessions and early demos. It's not like Capcom has to spend a ton of money paying for banner ads, print ads or TV spots. Just chrun out lots of digital material and surely sits will make articles on it. And let's face it, so many sites just copy and paste what other sites do so even if Capcom just sent out PR material to the top sites, I bet within a day or two many of the small sites will magically pop up their own article. Basically free advertising.

But it seemed Capcom didn't really do anything.... at least nothing I saw.

To bad really, I never really heard anything bout LP3. I played the first game and thought it was pretty fun, I liked the concept of how the cold effected you. I played the demo for the LP2 and it seemed almost like a different game, and not in a good way.

:p

I think it's a completely accurate way to look at it. Grand Theft Auto has become synonymous with open-world sandbox games. Dogma offers you far more freedom in exploration and action than any other RPG I can immediately think of. The comparison is obviously made in reference to the structure, and not the content of the game. Most RPGs limit you somewhat in where you can go and what you can do, and open the game up further as you complete the main plot.

I stand by my comparison.

I understood that. The Elder Scroll's series has more freedom when compared to Dragon's Dogma (But not the quality of Action.. which I don't think GTA is as strong at when compared to Saint's Row). So many fun ideas and interpretations to be had!

Speaking of DD.. it is coming to the US PSN+ in a month or so. The Dark Arisen version.. I may grab that and just forget about my Xbox 360 character and start over.

Just a month after the 360 reached it.

PlayStation 3 sales have hit the 80 million mark, Sony has announced.

That's as of 2nd November 2013.

PlayStation 3 launched in Japan on 11th November 2006 (it didn't launch in Europe until March 2007), making the console nearly seven years old.

Making its announcement today, Sony emphasised the third-party support the ageing console continues to receive, and revealed a whopping 4332 games have been released worldwide for it - excluding download games. Sony picked out Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, which sold 3.4 million copies in less than three weeks, and thatgamecompany's critically-acclaimed Journey for particular praise.

Sony said more than 300 games will be released from third-party developers and publishers as well as Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios "this holiday season", which sounds like a lot. In the small print, Sony said that's the total number of both Blu-ray disc and download versions that will be released from 1st November to 31st December 2013 in various regions. Included in the last is Polyphony Digital's racing game Gran Turismo 6 (the series has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide).

As for PlayStation Network, it currently has received more than 150 million cumulative registered accounts, as of 19th September 2013. There are more than 222,000 "digital content options" on the PlayStation Store, including 72,000 "game content", as of 31st October.

So, how does PlayStation 3 compare to its current generation competitors?

Last month Microsoft announced Xbox 360 has sold 80 million units worldwide. It should be noted that Microsoft's console launched a year before PS3, on 22nd November 2005.

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have been outsold by Nintendo's Wii, however, which has sold an incredible 100 million units worldwide since it launched on 19th November 2006.

Will PS3 eventually hit the 100 million sales mark? Possibly. But it seems unlikely to hit the sales high of its predecessor, the PlayStation 2, which has sold 155 million units worldwide, making it the best-selling console ever.

Is Amazing how close the split has been this gen. Something I do not think many would have expected at the start. Either Due to the PS2 dominance in the previous gen, or the 1 year lead MS had, or the Wii looking like it would destroy its more advanced brothers, or the PS3 coming out with such a ridiculous price point.

Don't see us having a gen like this again as the market seems to have gone stale and I don't blame it on the long gen.

MS really should have dropped the price months ago but all 3 have done well to sell as much as they did when you take into the RROD/Hack and Nintendo might not have had to rush the U out if the Wii had more power/HD graphics.

VaLLiancE/Cutting proved wrong again by the way :tounge:

A year behind, still caught up. Sony is amazing.

...Sony proved they're going to run their race on their terms and they have and still are.

PlayStation 3 launched in Japan on 11th November 2006 (it didn't launch in Europe until March 2007), making the console nearly seven years old.

PS4 has all the advantages the PS3 didn't, very good times ahead for gamers.

Ok cool, I was able to get a 19" AOC for $9. Thanks dude! Always wanted a 2nd monitor...

Sony said they would wait for MS to announce a new console first :p

That was in reference to the PS3.

If Sony waited for Microsoft for the X1, they may have waited until 2014, rumors claim MS are rushing things because of Sony right now...

Just rumors but with everything the way it is right now, it's crazy breh.

I still wonder if their low Christmas sales forced Sony's hand a little? Seemed both were happy to ride this gen out a little longer.

Either way as has been said all 3 have had a very good gen.

I just can't wait to get my X1 and start playing DR3 and my free copy of Fifa 14.

PS4 in late Decmber due to high demand in AU.

I still play current gen but I want new toys.

Sony seriously botched the PS3 in hardware design, launch price, early dev support, etc.

Thankfully they seem to have mostly learned their lesson.

So now we know they are both at 80mil, hopefully VGchartz updates their guesstimates..but I doubt that will happen lol

Why would they? Sony just finally updated their numbers to match the more accurate VGchartz data.

They still have the 360 at 78M.

Apparently its 80M shipped as well not sold to customers.

Crazy close generation.. Sony launching a year later but being basically in parity with MS by the end is impressive, but also disappointing for the company who absolutely dominated the competition last generation.

VaLLiancE and others obnoxiously quoting VGChartz as fact can hopefully stop.. declaring PS3 the winner between PS3 and 360 "officially," etc.

In fact, by Valliences logic this basically seals the deal.. it's official.. MS WON THE GENERATION AGAINST SONY! (since according to him the generation ended months ago as soon as VGChartz posted their article about Sony passing up MS)

I see the tables turning this generation with Sony’s PS4 moving large numbers of units and then a price cut comes to the XBO and its sales increase catching up to the PS4. In the end both will have respectable numbers with the edge going to Sony, IMO.

I look forward to the spin...

I hope we don't get anyone coming in saying "well MS sold theirs to customers, Sony only shipped them" when MS announced their 80 million as "sold to retailers" which is the same thing as shipped.

BUSTERMAN : Yeah it really could be a very different generation.

If I had to bet.. I'd bet PS4 is going to dominate almost as much as they did in the PS2/OG Xbox era with "core gamers" but the casual factor is still pretty up in the air.

But really.. games like Titanfall and other exclusives are going to be hard to pass up. Could also see a gen where more gamers than ever own 2 systems.

Either way I'm buying both and expecting an epic crapton of entertainment.. good times.

Don't think Astro is around to do that?

Considering what they had to deal with during this gen all 3 have done very well.

Any "sold to customers" number is an estimate anyways. The only thing either company knows for a fact is how many they've sold to retailers, and how many consoles connect to their online servers.

Haven't really seen that argued in a long time really.. most seem well aware it's pretty much all shipped numbers.
