And how does that make money long term, basically though microtransactions being forced into everything right? eventually these $1 trials are going to have to stop, hell I had a membership before and they still let me do the $2 trial. They always talk about how many subs they have but do they ever separate out how many are paying full price? This would have been a game that generally brought in hundreds of millions of dollars on it's own, I doubt they make the money back they spent on it this way unless people who subscribed go crazy over buying skins or something down the road.

Well obviously they hope people will just sub at the full price continuously and when they really get their first party going I could see it

But all of my subs so far have been these cheap deals although they only let me do 1 month for $1 this time

That's the thing, normal GP would get them about $120 for a year which is the cost of two standard edition games, that doesn't seem like a whole lot coming in. I know the plan is get them in cheap and then get the games as a service or microtransaction thing going so you can bring in money long term and keep people engaged in your product but I just don't see that working .

the whole point is that when you go and get that GP the players will see other games that they can download under that service. The days of using Physical copies are over and it is useless. There is a new way to generate money and Microsoft has the key.
no f*** that service
It being mainly used on a 1 or 2 month trial HURTS it's sales.

GP is a good service I like it. Discovered some good games on it that I would have never tried otherwise.

I do kinda agree, it’s hard to see them making money with this service in the long term though.

So of all the games that have been in gamepass only 3 devs have said it increased sales.
No. I have personally looked online in a google search for devs that have mentioned their sales have increased because of gamepass. There could be more, I have no idea. Not gonna search for that s*** all day.

Gears 5 breaks records as biggest launch for any Xbox Game Studios game this generation

Why is this even in the sales thread? No sales numbers. No sub breakdown.

MS basicly created their own own PR propaganda machine this gen.

Might as well delete the topic then as 90% of it is numberless now with digital being such a big part of things

Gamepass must be really cutting into gears sales, that or it's just not that popular in the UK anymore. Either way it's hard to see how GP is going to be profitable though, I only spent $2 for a two month trial to play the game and I won't be renewing to the service once the two month trial runs out, I'm sure a lot of other people did the same thing.

And borderlands 2 sold twice as much as 3... but oddly you didn't quote the most important bit.

Digital is much bigger than it was when B2 released and its even a lot bigger than when Gears 4 released.

GamePass obviously isn't hurting as MS would have changed something about it.

Boarderlands is also on more platforms

BL2 selling twice as much as 3, ok 50% drop vs over 75% drop. God of war just last year sold better at retail than any previous god of war in the UK, Spider-Man broke records at retail in the UK, Fifa sold over a million copies there, people still buy retail even if some want to pretend that they don't, yes it's percentage is shrinking but it's still significant. Borderlands being on more platforms doesn't matter, the last one was too.

One quote in that article actually says physical and digital. Game pass is obviously what's digging into sales there, you notice MS didn't mention sales just record number of people playing? How many are playing on a $1 trial? I know I was as were others here, I wouldn't have paid to play the game otherwise and I won't be renewing my sub once it expires. The analysts they talk to in the article don't seem to think it's as cut and dry as you are presenting it here.

In my view it's clear MS is willing to lose money now to try to get people used to paying for another subscription service, that way they can focus more on games as a service as they said they would and get not only the $120 a year but hopefully money brought in from a lot of microtransactions in their games in
the future.

Edit: This article seems to be talking more about money brought in being mostly from digital because there are so many other options for monetization vs just selling a copy of a game, actual AAA game sales seem to still be mostly physical.

That digital revenue figure, which includes microtransactions, DLC, subscription services, pay-to-play as well as individual game sales,
is up 12.5 per cent year-on-year, while the physical revenue figure is down 2.8 per cent. Overall, the total game sales revenue figure is up 9.1 per cent year on year

The shift from physical to digital for the video game market has been a slow but inevitable one, but the split when it comes to unit sales varies depending on the video game. The biggest-selling console game of 2018, FIFA 19, sold 2.5m units, according to the ERA, with 75 per cent coming from physical formats.

So, for big mainstream triple-A video games such as FIFA, physical is still very much the driving force behind unit sales revenue. However, for pretty much everything else, digital dominates.

It does matter when the last one was mostly physical sales and the new one is mostly digital sales when looking at an article discussing physical sales. The majority of people are paying $10 a month for Game Pass, not $1.

Is that why their revenue dropped by 10% last quarter?

Saw these on neogaf, MS has some serious work to do outside of the US if they want to be successful globally, these numbers in Spain and France are terrible. Switch has already surpassed X1 in Spain by a large margin

Red Dead 2 has sold over 25 million copies
Publisher Take-Two revealed today during its financial results for the first quarter that Red Dead Redemption 2‘s sales now sit at 25 million. The open-world cowboy game came out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26.

That is up 1 million since the last time Take-Two reported sales for the title back in May. That was when the publisher revealed its results for the fourth quarter of the financial year 2019. Red Dead Redemption 2 also sold 1 million copies between that fourth quarter and the previous one.

I really hope we get a next gen version of the game. I was playing it again today and even though it's native 4K on the One X it never quite looks as sharp as you'd expect a 4K game to look. I'd love to see them give us true HDR, better AA that doesn't soften the image so much, improved textures etc. It's a beautiful game but I'd love to see it get the same kind of treatment that they gave GTAV when it came out on the PS4 and X1.

If and when it’s released for next gen I have a feeling it’ll release on pc as well, no?

I would guess so, there really isn't any reason not to at that point. The only thing stopping them from doing a next gen would probably be the fact that the consoles are going to be backwards compatible and be able to play the original versions, still I'd double dip if I could get a version that looked even better.

70% of Boarderlands 3 sales are digital

Also their best selling title on PC which is 100% digital and without knowing how many copies were sold on PC overall it's impossible to determine how many copies were sold digitally on console. Digital is growing no doubt, more money is brought in digitally because that's how all microtransactions etc are paid for but like the article I put up here a week or two ago said most AAA titles still sell more physical copies than digital.

PS4 version of Fifa saw a drop in sales compared to last year while xbox and switch saw a rise. Switch still only accounts for 1% of the games sales

Why FH3 instead of 4? Price drop or sale? Gears 5 charting well for being “free” on Game Pass.

4 Xbox Studios games.
