I won't believe a guy who has access to numbers because it's not the news I want

He also has a reason to spin it differently, they never talk sales anymore it's always "engagement" etc. The bottom line is digital or not Gears is their 2nd biggest IP and it wasn't even in the top 20 in it's second month in their strongest market. I know it's cheap game pass trials and the fact that it's on the service at all that's causing that but it's hard to believe it actually sold better than a game that came out when digital wasn't quite as big and GP didn't exist. It has nothing to do with news I do or don't want to hear, it just doesn't make sense.

He does spin things that's part of his job, when he said the other day that xbox fans shouldn't worry about them making money on GP he knew that was BS. People aren't worried for MS's financial security they are worried that certain types of games won't get made because they wont be able to find a way for backend monetization like they can with GaaS and MP focused games.

Only one person appears to be spinning. He didn't say engagement he said sales wise...

Phil Spencer: Gears 5 sold well for us. It sold better than Gears 4.

Yes and I said I don't believe him, they don't talk sales anymore and the fact that the game isn't in the top 20 in their strongest territory by far should tell you that or that gears 4 was a flop. Did they talk sales during it's launch weekend? nope they talked about how many people played it, there is no doubt that GP is cannibalizing sales for that game, $1 trials and new entrant in their 2nd biggest IP should tell you what was going to happen. I count as one of the people who played it during the launch weekend but I only spent $2.00 to play it and had access to it for two months. They won't admit that GP would do that though because that's what they are pushing right now, they are willing to take a loss on it because they want to build it up to be a service based ecosystem and any negative news wouldn't be allowed.

Gears 5 outsold Gears 4, fact.

I would say it very likely sold less and to him he just means more people are playing. Its not like we will ever hear sales about any Microsoft game anymore anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Spin all you want you've been negative on that game since day 1

Not spin it's an opinion, I played the game from start to finish so it's not like I'm some jerk throwing stones from the sidelines who never touched it. Spencer will lie, they all will lie. GP is his baby, he is doing everything he can to build hype for it now, they undoubtedly took a financial loss on Gears 5 having it come out on GP day one and they are willing to do that because they are playing the long game and they feel a subscription model is the way to go. Again I don't believe it sold better, it's not spin it's me saying I don't think he's telling the truth and the fact that it's not in the top 20 in it's largest market a month after release is what I'm basing that on.

They're a publicly traded company. Lying about sales is not something that they could get away with. Not talking about them, sure, as we've seen, but if he said it sold better then it.sold.better.

This wasn't in a report to investors it was something said in an interview, it's not the same thing. Gears 4 debuted at #3 in it's first month and digital sales weren't even included in that report, Gears 5 debuted at # 7 (digital sales were included) against lesser competition and it fell out of the top 20 the following month. There was no GP in 2016, digital sales were still a thing etc, I have no doubt he's just saying that Gears 5 sold better because he doesn't want the narrative out there that GP is cutting down on actual sales. It's only logical that it would, it's what's going to happen with a subscription model especially one they are pushing so aggressively with their $1 a month trials that aren't even limited to one time per customer.

If this were US rankings it wouldn't have charted at all and not counted as a sale because it was included in all of the hardware bundles they were selling, the ranking isn't based on the game actually selling individual copies so this is very misleading..

No.4 where you will find Sea of Thieves - an Xbox One game that launched in March 2018. Sea of Thieves was included in all variety of bundles for the Xbox One S All-Digital console. which was on sale for between £110 to £140 during Black Friday (arguably the most aggressive hardware offer last week).

You just have to every time don't you?

Don't see you pointing this out for the PS exclusives. Ever.

I think when Spencer says its selling better he just means its doing better. Which is what matters.
