PS2 was a beast in its day. I still have mine and a few games from PSone/PS2.

All the Playstations were - the power of the PS brand name. We all think of the PS3 as the worse out of them all but at its worse, it still managed to sell almost 90 million.

The Ps5 is not selling for a loss anymore.

Sony’s $499 PlayStation 5 console is no longer selling at a loss. Bloomberg reports that Sony chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki shared the news just a week after the company announced it had sold 10 million PS5 consoles.

While the PS5 with a disc drive is no longer selling for less than the cost to produce it, the less expensive and disc-less $399 PS5 Digital Edition is reportedly on track to have Sony’s related losses offset by other hardware sales like accessories and the PS4. Sony sold 500,000 PS4 consoles in the most recent quarter, bringing lifetime sales up to an impressive 116.4 million.

It took Sony years to stop losing money on PS3 sales, but the company stopped selling the PS4 at a loss around six months after its debut in 2013. The PS5 has taken ever so slightly longer, but it’s clearly not repeating the costly exercise of the PS3 despite early reports suggesting Sony was struggling with PS5 pricing due to expensive parts.

Microsoft revealed earlier this year that it sells its Xbox consoles at a loss and doesn’t turn a profit on pure hardware alone. Microsoft has not been reporting hardware sales since early on in the Xbox One lifetime, but an Xbox executive revealed during the Epic v. Apple trial that Microsoft turns a profit from game sales and online service subscriptions.

Sony also reported (PDF) its biggest Q1 revenue ever for PlayStation today, and its second biggest revenue for PlayStation during a non-holiday quarter. There are also 104 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, spending an average of $37.09 each during Q1 2021 across digital software, add-ons, and services.

I never had a PS1 or PS2.

It's probably more to the point that actual gamers have had to pay a premium to get their hands on the new consoles if they haven't been able to secure any stock, I doubt scalpers have rooms full of consoles waiting to sell.

That's just Japan's numbers.
BD also got a few DS games and a TV show
I've looked all over and the only other estimate I get is 460k copies globally, that's still not a number MS would greenlight a sequel for especially when an RPG in this day and age would take a lot of time and money.

The reason why PS5 didn't sell more than all other platforms combined was because PS4 had a good week. Difference is few hundred units.

To clarify, the target is more than 22 million PS5's sold by March 2022 and selling 14.8 million PS5's is the fiscal year target.

Sony claims it’s secured enough components to put 12 million more PlayStation 5 consoles into the market during its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2022.

Speaking during a web call on Thursday (transcribed by VGC), CFO Hiroki Totoki claimed that Sony has secured enough semiconductors – which have been in short supply during the pandemic – to achieve its fiscal year target of selling 14.8 million PS5s.

“The shortage of semiconductors has impacts in various areas and through various measures, we have been taking some action,” he said.

“For PS5, the target has been set for the number of units to be sold this year, and we have secured the number of chips that is necessary to achieve that. Regarding the supply of semiconductors, we are not concerned.”

In Sony’s previous earnings call in April, Totoki had said that Sony did not expect to completely resolve supply issues that have seen PS5 widely sold out since launch.

The exec said at the time that Sony was considering various solutions to help it cope with the global shortage of hardware components, including potentially altering hardware designs or sourcing secondary suppliers.

The console remains hard to find nine months after its launch last November, with each new batch of systems selling out almost instantly.

While it is unlikely that Sony’s news will change this in the short term, the hope is that by securing these semiconductors it will eventually be able to produce enough supply to meet demand.

Last month it appeared that Sony is indeed planning to roll out revised PlayStation 5 hardware, after a new version of the PS5 Digital Edition console was detailed in an official Japanese product manual shows that the updated hardware model (CFI-1100B) and 300g less weight than the launch version.

Sony has said it hopes PS5 shipments in its FY2021 (April 2021 to March 2022) will surpass the 14.8 million PS4s shipped during the same stage of that console’s lifecycle in Sony’s FY2014. This would bring total PS5 sales to 22.6 million units.

The company recently claimed that PlayStation 5 had become Sony’s fastest-selling console after topping 10 million sales globally. The console hit the milestone on July 18, about eight months after its launch on November 12, 2020.

7.8 million of those PS5 sales were recorded during Sony’s previous fiscal year, meaning it has around 12 million of its current FY target left to go.

Couldn't that just be people who bought it used or borrowed someone else's copy? 7K is still abysmal.

Pretty sure it's digital only? But even still 1,000 buyers wouldn't then lend it out to several thousands.

It's also on GP so maybe found some gamers but I wouldn't be surprised if most Xbox owners don't even know it got released as it got 0 advertising. I only bought it when it was on sale and dirt cheap and it's not really a console type of game.

That 7k is also just that sites users do again not the full sales figure.

Sony fans will grab at any possible straw to make it look bad.

Gamepass probably helped boost the players. The statement is from Capcom so pretty reliable source.
People who played it vs people who bought it aren't one in the same you are right especially if it's on GP.

But Capcom get paid in advance for it going on GP(only recently went on the service)

The statement looks to be from someone who took a screenshot of an 'article' claiming to take the data from the 'Capcom leaks' so it's a pretty reliable source if you want it to be badly enough.

Either way, Ace Attorney Chronicles released only on PC, Switch and PS last month so there is some merit to that tweet since Capcom did not bother with an Xbox version.

Curve achieved its largest ever opening weekend sales revenue this weekend, generating more than $5million and securing the Number 1 slot in the Steam Global Charts for Neon Giant’s The Ascent, firmly positioning the Indie title as a AAA competitor.

Over 1700 YouTube and Twitch channels have streamed gameplay with over 10m generated views, and 90% of global Tier One publications have covered the cyberpunk themed action roleplaying game which is the first title from Swedish Indie Neon Giant. This has put The Ascent in the Top 10 for PR coverage received on a single day in 2021, on par with and above AAA titles.

“The Ascent is the first game out of Curve where our new team has been able to substantially make their mark, working closely with the developer and our platform partners. This success is the result of a genuine team effort throughout the company, the arrival of new leadership and talent and is truly reflective of our new approach of being developer and player focused in all that we do,” commented Curve CEO John Clark.

Curve’s launch campaign focused heavily on community engagement, with the game quickly becoming a must-play title for content creators, influencers and streamers, enabling the title to rapidly build hype and awareness in the run up to launch weekend.

“We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from the community and all our players. As a small team of twelve, creating The Ascent has taken a monumental effort, and we cannot express how grateful we are to everyone who has played the game and given us feedback,” Neon Giant

I'm lowkey tracking how VGChartz estimates are doing this gen to see if they have improved. Quite interesting to see as VGChartz had PS5 at 10 million by week 36 or so. Sony came out and officially said they hit the 10 million mark as of July 18, 2021.
