Shawn Layden Leaves PlayStation

Well that's not great timing, they have a console launch in a year, then again all of the games he'd be responsible for around launch are well underway. Over, on neogaf they are saying it was a power struggle with Jim Ryan that brought it on, of course there are others that seem to think his whole job was how well he did on stage at E3 so who knows? lol

Edit: It sounds like the Japanese tweet Sony sent out says he retired, from what I can gather his positions was basically the same as Shu's but Shu had to report to him. Layden has only been in that position for a couple of years so it shouldn't be too big of a deal with him leaving but we'll see.

He wasn’t as upfront as most other devs or executives... totally opposite of the spectrum of Phil with Reggie filling in the middle.

I don't think he cared for being in the spotlight at all.

True, but maybe he didn’t have to with PlayStation’s current position?

I do find it weird he didn’t have much more presence like Iwata (he like Phil was a gamer/developer) or, wait, does he have no twitter? Kinda weird he hasn’t made a statement, like House and Boyes.

He does have a twitter but don't forget he isn't the head of PlayStation he was head of the first party studios, when that was Phil Spencer's job at MS we didn't hear much from him either. It is kind of a head scratcher though that he hasn't said anything, it does make me think it was a dispute with some higher ups at SIE.

Maybe he just wanted out, but, it’s kinda like Sony pushed him to it by kinda demoting him...

Formerly president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (until Sony’s regions were brought under one roof in 201:cool:, Layden had been with Sony since 1987, serving in roles like vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan.

When Sony consolidated its worldwide PlayStation divisions into a single unit in 2018, Layden was no longer president of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, and the company said he instead would “concentrate his focus” on leading Sony’s game development studios.

*edit lmao the  emogis are back, this are supposed to be 8 and )

Whenever anyone who passionately cares about the industry leaves, its a sad day. Happy trails for him wherever he goes next.

Also, isn't this similar to how Jack Trenton left SCEA? Some behind the scenes stuff that leads to a stepping down?

Sounds like there is a lot going on:

‘Speaking under the condition of anonymity, GameDaily's source relayed what their company is facing.

"This is the least amount of clarity we've ever had on a new console this close to transition,” the source said. “I believe that the [global restructuring] is exponentially exacerbating the already difficult process of transitioning to a new generation. And now we’re getting nervous. Read: very nervous."

The third-party nervousness around the PS5's imminent launch isn't directly attributable to either leader, but there has been a fair amount of internal secrecy so that data and information isn't leaked before launch. Internal teams are slow to receive word about the new console, which means that third-party developers and publishers are being kept in the dark far more than in past cycles.’

Could all be nothing and just ready for something new.

But Jim Ryan is an utter tool

I'm guessing he's good at his job but they need to keep him as far away from a microphone as is possible, nearly every time he speaks he puts his foot in his mouth.

That tool is behind why Playstation has and continues to be so dominant in Europe.

Ryan has made some stupid statements but behind the scenes he's clearly good at his job or he wouldn't still be there. That thing about not doing cross play to protect children was idiotic, of course now he seems to be championing cross play so it makes me wonder if that protect the children thing was his idea or he was told to say that by someone higher up. I don't think Sony was prepared for that to become the issue it did with some and maybe they were scrambling and he had a brain fart?

Microsoft should hire Layden.
With all the new studios working on projects, he might be a good guy to have around for his input

Ryan isn't like Mattrick other than the foot in mouth thing, if he were like Mattrick he'd be trying to stuff PSVR's into every PS5 box etc. Ryan has been in charge or at a very high level at PlayStation for a long time, he didn't just come in after someone else plugged up the holes in the ship and get all of the credit only to turn around and try to sink the ship again.
