Shenmue Series

From that same link, btw:

"We expect the campaign to make it to $5 million, and possibly more. Creator Yu Suzuki has said he doesn’t mind if Shenmue 3 doesn’t raise $10 million, although he had described the stretch goal as unlocking a “true” open world game."

p.s. More:

"Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki has said before that in order to make Shenmue 3 a true open-world game, the game’s funding campaign will need to raise $10 million. Now, with only a few days left, the $10 million dream is becoming less and less possible."

"Fear not, as Suzuki is not disappointed. “No I won’t be [disappointed],” he said in the latest Q&A. “I am grateful that there’s another chance for a new Shenmue. I will make what I can within the budget from your money.”
2d side scroller confirmed.

Squeee! I just got out my ogXbox Shenmue 2, and it has a full colour instruction manual!

I don't have anything to play the game on anymore. I remember holding onto this thinking it would be my retirement plan eventually...

Go PAL region. :/

"Still, the idea that Yu Suzuki could develop and release Shenmue 3 on a $2M budget doesn’t add up. What everyone seems to be forgetting is that the original Shenmue released in 1999 for Dreamcast literally held the Guinness World Record for the most expensive game of all time (at the time) with a production budget of $70M ($99M, if you adjust for inflation. Though Suzuki disputes SEGA’s stated budget and says the game “only” cost $47M). Even if technology has progressed since then, either we’re going to be getting a sharply scaled-back experience, a game that looks like it was made a decade ago, or there’s a source of additional funding somewhere."

I'm assuming Suzuki isn't in charge of how the money is spent this time? Or is he? If he is, we're in trouble. We need someone who knows how to stretch a dollar, not produce a game that sets Guinness World Records for most expensive game of all time.

There is a source of additional funding -- Sony -- but statements from them indicate they aren't pitching in all that much, and that most of the game is self-funded.
Well, one of the reasons that it was so expensive is because of how the best devs back then would build their own game engines. Up until like a year ago, Suzuki-san said that building the engine from scratch was the only way to go, in an interview. He must have come to his senses and stepped into this decade when he finally decided to go with UE4.

Did you see the new teaser? Not looking too hot. Bad animation and a use of UE4 that leaves much to be desired. Looks very amature. Luckily the game is a loooooooooong way from completion.

Well at least now we know what a Dreamcast game looks like @ 1080p.

Yes. They would have done better to not show anything, imo. Hoping the game wouldn't look like that. They probably used old assets...and probably could have used some fan-made assets and it would have been way better. Typical.

So, just an observation. When a game is Xbox/PC, it ends up in Multiplatform forum. This game has been announced as PS4/PC so far, with no mention of exclusivity at all. I know that it got announced during Sony's presser, but that was a while ago now.

Not really true, at least as far as I sort things. Mods may differ in sorting techniques, but my default is to put PS4/PC or X1/PC ("console exclusives") in the console specific forums, not multiplatform. I do that because I consider us a console-focused forum. There are lots of indie examples of this. Titanfall would be a "big game" example. I have made exceptions for games with a big PC presence, though.

There has only been confirmation of a PS4 and PC version at this point, afaik (haven't been following the development closely). There was talk of an Xbox version as a stretch goal, iirc, but it never materialized. So, I have assumed it is either PS4/PC at this point -- or at least time-limited exclusive on PS4/PC. I'll be happy to move it to MP section once an Xbox or Wii U version are confirmed.

Well, if that's the case, I actually agree with your sorting method more. I just have seen threads move from Xbox to multiplatform because of PC. I believe Titanfall and some others, including the DX12 thread. Kind of annoying, to me. I would just like to see a little consistency with this on UVGF.

Off the top of my head, I'm not aware of any threads that have been moved from the Xbox section to the MP section just because of PC involvement, except for the DX12 thread (although that makes some sense to me, since DX12 is supposed to be a bigger deal for PCs than Xbox). I searched Titanfall, and all the threads I saw, including the Official Thread, were in the Xbox section. The Titanfall 2 thread was in the MP section, but that makes sense.

I may just not be aware of the particular threads you're talking about, though. If there are any specific threads that you're concerned about -- which have been moved from Xbox to MP just because of PC -- let me know, and I'll take a look.

The Kickstarter just ended. Total = 6.3 million.

More than I thought it'd get. Had a nice showing on the final day.

To be fair, the Tombraider thread is still and Xbox thread, and will likely stay there until official announcements are made concerning other systems. Even though it's kinda a likely it will eventually hit PS4, let alone PC.

I think I would honestly would feel better about the future of this game if Sony did in fact fund it, as it would have shown commitment. It could just be that the money that Yu Suzuki was asking for was just too much for either Sony or Microsoft and the decision to use UE4 was made at the same time as Suzuki-san wanting the cheaper version as a specifically crowd funded affair.

That said, I still think that not remaking the first 2 games as a single effort first is a very poor business decision.

ok, thanks for the update guys. I guess I will pay attention if this happens again. There is obviously a gray area with PC crossover. I don't think looking at past threads will even be worth the effort. I also suppose that this game is in a similar boat as TR, as they are both a question mark about other consoles. I don't want to derail this thread any further about that issue.

It doesn't need a AAA budget at all. Even if it is something along the lines of Life is Strange, I will be happy with the outcome. It's a shame they are not handling the Kickstarter in the best way, but I feel confident that the game will get made and be at the least, a nice little story driven experience.

It doesn't need a big budget, but you need to be sensible. With the final tally, the game area is going to be the size of Dobuita from Shenmue...that's a big freaking step back from Shenmue I, let alone the much more expansive Shenmue II.

Another issue is, is this the Shenmue going to tie up the series and that's it? If not, will there be a Shenmue IV and how long are were going to have to wait for that.

Maybe a tighter budget would be good for the series. Parts of it wouldn't be relevant today, so stripping it back for the story might be am asset?

I think the game, to have broader appeal, absolutely needs a larger budget. Honestly, I'd rather someone else make it. Yu Suzuki doesn't seem to have it anymore; like he hasn't grown with the industry. The little snippets he's put up look extremely amateur to me. Poor voices, poor animation, and pretty darn poor usage of UE4. I really want the game to be good, but it just plain feels like a cheap indie at this point, imo.

Yu is thinking of attending TGS and China shows... I wonder if he'll open with "Woopsie! Uncle YuYu spent all the money! New Kickstarter!"

Apparently making the first 2 for a HD release isn't a dead cert for Sega due to licensing issues.
