Sony's Adam Boyes has explained that the company is working on getting fans the games they want on PlayStation platforms and that includes the likes of Shenmue and Yakuza.

"When we started the third-party production team, it was born out of necessity. We had a lot of publishers and a lot of content that had come out for various platforms and various territories that weren't necessarily coming to our territory, platforms we'd love to see them on," Boyes told Kotaku.

Boyes explained that Sony are working on trying to get games that have been requested by fans on to Sony platforms.

"We've got a massive list—we're calling everyone trying to get that list as much as possible. A lot of issues come around clearances or intellectual property ownerships and stuff like that."

Interestingly, for Shenmue and Yakuza fans, Boyes says it is those games that Sony are focusing on.

"We get a ton of requests for Yakuza, a ton of requests for Shenmue. We see the lists," Boyes said.

"We have a person that compiles those lists and prioritises based on how many requests we've gotten. And I think to date there's well over 10,000 mentions across like forum threads and stuff like that. So those are the ones we're focused on."

Boyes also commented on when fans should expect to start to see the result of Sony's work getting ports onto PlayStation platforms.

"I would say within the next six months we'll have at least one if not a few announcements to make on that front."

Whether Boyes is talking about the PS4, the PS Vita, or even the PS3, remains to be

What does Sony have to do with Shenmue? :txbconfused:

Oh, I think I get it now. They're talking about porting old games?

How about some of that Last Guardian. A demo of it would be a great way to at least give people a taste of what's to come if it hasn't been cancelled yet. Plus, if it does all go done the drain, at least gamers would've gotten to try it out once upon a time.

So they're gonna get Shenmue made and its gonna sell like 20k copies? That's cool, however, outside of gaming forums I don't see much interest.

Sounds like we're going to start seeing the might of Sony's internal studios tonight. Too many talented teams have projects in the works. Can't wait until we start seeing what the second wave brings.

Yeah there really isn't that much announced at this point.

I like it.. another thing Sony seems to have learned from last gen where they announced a ton of games that didn't come out for years.

Yes, please. This issue sticks in my craw like no other this generation. I bought a PS3 specifically for it. Show me SOMETHING!

As to the topic: I like the new Sony. They seem far more receptive to their audience and developers than at anytime before. It looks like the humbling they got last generation taught them quite a few things that they seem to have taken to heart. This seems like another right step.

I personally think a Shenmue 3 can still sell, and much better than the games before it. It never got the exposure it needed, due to it being on Dreamcast. (I loved my DC) If it were saved for PS2, I think things would be different now. I can't believe Sega ported Ecco but not Shenmue!

Anyway, It needs to have the graphical impact that it once did, for one. Now is the time for that! No loading, etc. Throw in a new exotic local, boom! Sandbox games have only gained in popularity since the first 2 games, right?

Sometimes it is symbolic, to win hearts, to let people know they care about games & gamers.

Shenmue sold a 1,000,000 copies on Dreamcast, and that console only had an install base of 10 million.
For comparisons's sake, Shenmue2 on Xbox sold 200,000 copies, on an install base of over 24 million.

I'll believe it when I see it it really hard to believe Sony would recoup the cost of developing a new Shenmue . If it is a port Sega might as well put them on as many systems as possible . Sadly after a whole generation of Shenmue "April fools " news I've become a skeptic .

So your saying cause it's going to have a limited audience on the PS4 it's going to sell more?

I'm all for Sony trying to bring back some of the neglected franchises. I just hope Sony isnt expecting those franchises to sell gangbusters or it might be a short lives revival...

I was one of the million who bought Shenmue on the DC back in the day too

Not sure what Xbox had to do with anything. A lot of Sega fans went right to Xbox (me included), and a lot of those fans weren't too happy about what Sega did by killing the Dreamcast, when they obviously couldn't afford to fully see through the entire generation. (me included) ...let alone the fact that Shenmue 2 on Xbox was a PORT of a last gen game. 60 fps upgrade was nice but the controls were last gen! (1 analog) I can't believe MS or Sega should have expected this game should have sold better on Xbox without new textures (at least for Ryo and his leather jacket) and updated controls. I see why MS probably wouldn't fund S3 but if they'd have just put a little more budget into porting 2, things might have been different.

I also never bought Panzer Orta probably out of spite for canceling Dreamcast, but I did rent it and it was a beautiful game. I ended up getting Shenmue 2 used later on. It was a really good port, even with the already dated control scheme.

Keep in mind I had a Sega Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, and Saturn before Dreamcast. I think I've earned the right to be bitter for a while. I mean, they saw the Saturn through the entire gen but they couldn't make it through Dreamcast? They probably shouldn't have tried from the start, IMO. (But I did love my DC)

Anyway, timing is everything. Nobody has anything against Sega anymore except we all know they generally make lousy games now. Lol. Anything they end up making should probably be multi plat for exposure, but then I wonder about quality.

Lastly, I just don't see Yu Suzuki making this game anymore. He was such a genius game director, but he has just been a hermit for a while now. I'd love a Shemue 3! It's just that the odds are stacked against it actually happening, sadly.

I do not get the Shenmue hype, I actually bought it on DC and it was pretty mediocre imo

I think it was mostly that it was the first of it's kind, being an open sandbox game and combining mini games and collecting. It was the first time I had played around in a greater game world where I could pick up an older virtual console and play that game within that game. Also, get to work on the shipping dock early... forklift race!

Mostly, I loved the fighting mechanics (as a VF fan), and the learning progression was very cool. The game originated as a VF RPG and you could tell. There could have been a bit more fighting though, as opposed to QTEs, IMO.

... and I know QTEs get a lot of flack sometimes, but they do serve a purpose of breaking up monotonous gameplay. Not only did Suzuki-san invent the QTE, but also coin the term QTE: Quick Time Event.

the 2nd game fixed a lot of the issues the first game had. For one if you got lost and god damn it happened to me a few times in Shenmue in the 2nd one if you asked someone you could follow them to the area you needed. They also fixed the time issue if you had to be at a place at whatever time in the first one you had to wait till it was really that time in the game in the 2nd one you'd get there and it asked do you want to move time to whatever time you needed to trigger the event.

Shenmue was ok but the 2nd one if you ask me fixed all the issues.

I'd take a remake hell they don't even have to update anything just get it running on PS4 then do number 3.

I'd love a new Shenmue or even a remake of the old ones with a new control scheme, no more using the Dpad for the exploring part of the game. I'd also love it if they could figure out a way to get rid of the QTE's but I know that's a big part of the series and most people would probably freak out.

They can't make due on the games they have been promising for years, how about pull that off first. Last Guardian has like a 30 year development cycle.

The internet would go wild, gamers everywhere would say they're going to buy it. And when the game actually comes out, much like it's predecessors it'd sell horrendously once again proving gamers are all talk, but rarely buy the games that best warrant a purchase. Meanwhile COD:Shoot s*** Up Bro 3 will sell a gazillion.

Sorry. Didn't like the series. I bought the game though. Just couldn't get into it. Would be a win for the XBOX ONE though and for those who love those types of games.
