Slowly upgrading my HT system.

I had to take my receiver in for repair this week. Went to bed Saturday , it was working fine and woke up Sunday to no Audio. Very disappointed since its no easy task to remove it from its spot in a closet hidden away. Definitely hate just using the crappy TV speakers...

my onkyo pulled that s*** with me 2 weeks ago. I just got a new on that was on sale. Got some new used speakers too.

So, I'm about to have a new house built, and I get the bonus room upstairs all for my Media Room :D

It looks to be time to look into getting a proper sound system. I will have a relatively smallish (perfect for my tv and optimal couch distance), square space so I'm excited to have good conditions to set up a nice sound field.

I'm looking for Ideas for good, affordable systems as well as Ideas for wiring the room as I want to run wires in the walls while I'm having it built. I don't think I will build the speakers in wall as I want them to be adjustable.

Good wire? future proofing?

What should I keep in mind while putting this together?

I break ground in a couple weeks!

IMO, you cant go wrong with in walls if you have a small space. There are some adjustable models, but I dont think the ability to adjust is something you'll miss. Most likely you wont even notice. Especially for the fronts and center. You can look back at page 1 of this thread for a pic of mine.
For the rears, you can go with wall mounted, or even on stands so that they can be pointed towards the listening area.
Dont forget about the A/V equipment. If you have a small space, you may want to consider placing the equipment in a closet or another room. I use this to transmit the IR signal:
Amazon product
You can use CAT-5 Cable to run the signal greater distances.
I have an HDMI port built into the wall below my tv so I can plug in an xbox, dvd player or anything else that I dont use very often so it doesnt take up space in my A/V closet.
For the rear speakers you can put wall plates in near the speaker locations for easy hook up.The wires can go in wall and in floor to the wall plates.
If you go with in walls, you may want to talk to the contractor about stud placement on that wall. You dont want a stud direct center where the TV will be because then a stud will be right where the center channel will have to go. Also, you dont want a nice cavity in a perfect spot left or right of the TV, then stud placement doesn't have the cavity in the same spot on the other side of the TV. Also, with in walls, you can research the proper cubic footage for the speaker box and have cross pieces put in to make that.
Dont forget about HDMI cables to run from the A/V closet to the TV. Run at least 4 to future proof your system and also to have a spare or two in case one happens to go bad. Just put wall plates behind the TV. Monoprice has good deals on cables.
Make sure there is an outlet behind the TV also...
On all wires and cables try to make sure there are no binding points so that they can be easily pulled back through if there is a problem wire. If you have a bad wire you can use that wire to pull through another one easily.

I would jump on this sub fast! Purchase two if you have the budget.

Never saw the need for a separate sub, personally. I have two three ways with a 12" in both. They're beasts. They're 20 years old also. They've been great.
I think you would be quite surprised at what a dedicated sub could do for your existing system. You would never go back...

I dunno man. Not sure how much more I can get over two 12"?
Its about the frequency response. Those speakers you have most likely have a frequency response in the 40-50 hz range. A good sub is easily in the low 30's and 20's.

I added some ceiling speakers for my Atmos system.

A couple tips:
Make one of these. This way you can actually mark the center point of the hole instead of using the template that comes with the speakers. Then just drive the nail in and use a sharpie in the other hole. Its much easier than the template. Just cut the hole with a drywall saw:

3.jpg

Make one of these also. any piece of stiff wore will do.You want leg A to be the radius of the hole, leg B to be the height of the speaker and leg c is just the handle so you can turn. Just drill a small hole and push the wire through and turn it in a circle to check for clearance.

Checking for height clearance is important. Sometimes cross braces arent flush against the drywall...

These really pushed my system over the top....

Well I am going all out(but got a decent deal plus sold my current set for $1000) as the XBR-Z9D is the best picture I have ever seen after looking at in person next to the 75X940D,Signature G6 OLED and the UN78KS9800.

Been following the above sets and especially the Z9D(1800 NITS!)... I went with the 75 inch XBR-Z9D am waiting for her to ship hopefully all works out.

:surprise: Seriously for 9 grand that sucker better give hand jobs. Enjoy!

I've never owned a Sony TV but now with them releasing OLEDs next year if they are even better than LGs I may have to buy one next time I upgrade.

It's coming together.

Damn dude, that has got to be in impressive picture at that price!

But is it really better looking that an OLED?

I have a Sony HX850 which at the time was the nicest looking LED I could find in the size I wanted, and I also have a 720p Panasonic plasma that was 6 years old when I got the Sony and the plasma is still better looking overall just because of the technology. I was hoping OLED was similar to plasma in that it is just superior for picture quality, colour saturation and response. Sports in particular are superior on plasma vs LED just because it's so much smoother on plasma.

Just wondered your thoughts on OLED vs your top of the line Sony?

14 bit color processing
1440 hz(simulation) smooth motion
Almost 650 Local Dimming Zones(which is far beyond most FALD's)
1800 nits(brightness OLED has up to 800)
Better response time which makes it better for gaming as does the lack of potential burn in.
Far better upscaling of non 4K content including HDR effects added to SDR content.

Look at it for yourself...Best Buy has em :)

Still haven't got it yet and they keep changing the delivery day and with me working a full time job this is a huge inconvenience....
So if they can't get here by say Monday,I am getting a refund and saving money and buying the smaller 65 inch.

I doubt it
"Sony’s remarkable Z9D series, for instance, offers incredible spectral highlights with intense peak brightness, but even with more addressable individual zones of LED backlights than any TV before it, the Z9D just couldn’t take down the LG B6 in overall picture quality. Though our Z9D sample came in at 65-inches, the smaller 55-inch B6 OLED came off as the more impressive of the two sets in an informal poll of DT staffers."

^ For gamers its better offering better motion/motion resolution, lower input lag and no burn in.

Anywayz my set came in last night and is shot :(
I am hoping cleveland plasma takes care of this in a timely manner.
