So...I got a Wii U last week (small review).

Never thought the first next-gen game I'd be playing was actually released 11 years ago, but it was. I managed to pick up a Wind Waker bundle Wii U last week, and I must say, I'm impressed by it so far.

On the topic of The Wind Waker, the game looks gorgeous at 1080p (I think it's also 60fps) and hasn't aged even one bit thanks to the cartoon-like art style. I had never owned the original, so it felt like an entirely new game to me. And if I had never heard of it, and you had told me it was new, I probably would have believed it. Additionally, the Wii U's gamepad almost seems tailor-made for Zelda games, allowing instant switching of items to button slots, a constant open map when sailing the seas, and a small gyroscope that definitely helps with aiming certain weapons, without having to bother with a second analog stick.

Furthermore, the Wii U surprisingly allows for several multitasking features I didn't know about. It wasn't too long into the game before I was stuck and unable to figure out what I was supposed to do, like every Zelda game I've played before it. So I simply press the home screen and immediately pull up an internet browser to search for a walkthrough on GameFaqs. With the touchscreen, the browser was just as easy to operate as any browser on a tablet or phone, with additional button support for quick navigation. After I was done, I just press the home screen twice and it returns to exactly where I was at. Needless to say, it was an incredibly useful feature. The off-TV play really is as cool as it sounds too.

You also get a free download of the Hyrule Historia, which is a pretty neat bonus that comes with a ton of artwork and information spanning every game in the Zelda series. I haven't managed to play any other games just yet, but there are some game demos I want to download, like ZombieU and Wonderful 101.

Anyways, I do have a few small gripes. For one, the off-TV play has an extremely short range. I merely went to the next room across the hall and it lost its connection. I can barely make it to my living room without getting lag on it. Oh well, no Zelda on the toilet for me. Also, the Gamepad has an extremely short battery life (about 4 hours) before it needs recharging again. Although this is not so bad considering I play on my computer monitor and so I keep it plugged in at nearly all times. Lastly, the gyroscope had a tendency to "flip out" on me sometimes, especially when I really needed it (like a boss battle). I'd often start using the analog stick out of frustration to properly aim my boomerang. That's not to say the gyroscope hadn't been really useful throughout the game though.

Anyways, just though I'd give my two cents on the machine. I'd definitely recommend it if you are on the fence, although I sometimes fear that it won't be able to live up to its full potential as it is already considered doomed in the eyes of many in the industry. After all, I'd love to see how this would work with a game like the Elder Scrolls, but Bethesda seems intent on not releasing any games for it. So buy at your own risk, but it was worth it to me.

Glad you're enjoying it. I may download WW this weekend. I really loved that game.

It's too bad publishers are dismissing the console. I would have loved to have seen GTA5 on it.

Yeah, no doubt. I think the Gamepad would be extremely useful in a game like that.

That is awesome. I'm still on fence about whether to get Wii U or not. I hardly play Wii nowadays. :( I've thought about selling it and get Wii U. Dunno yet.

Nice review SG, I was hoping WW would play well on WiiU. Looks I'll have to take the plunge.

I would really like for someone to buy me a WiiU. I'd gladly spend the money on the games that I want to play, but as of right now, for the price the console currently is even with the recent price drop, I can't do it.

I'd like to revisit the Wind Waker, but I can't justify spending more than $200 in order to do so.

Do these consoles still require that massive update like they did at launch, or is that a thing of the past?

Nah, it was already up to date when I got it. One of the first things I checked.

I would probably pick one up for my kids if it was hackable like the Wii was
Actually, the virtual Wii on the Wii U can be hacked as well. I won't tell you where to go to do it, but you can do most of the same homebrew Wii stuff. It doesn't affect the Wii U side of things though. Haven't tried it myself, so can't say how well it works.

I picked up my Wii U at launch and I really enjoy it. I don't have the time to game that I once did, so I had missed a lot of the launch games on other systems, so I got to check them out on the Wii U. The screen on the gamepad has been very useful for most games and offscreen play is awesome. I agree that the gamepad range could be improved, but I got myself a second power supply for the main console for cheap and I can always move it closer to where I want to play offscreen. It would be really cool if they made it so that you could play offscreen over the internet so you could play anywhere, but I don't see Nintendo doing that. Maybe next console?

Meh, I have a hacked wii for wii games for the kids, for the WiiU it is just a couple of newer games they want to play, someone will probably hack it eventually. By hack I mean softmod, instead of just chipping it

I'm glad your enjoying it, but I don't think I would ever get a Nintendo console again until they start making a few adult games. There just seems to be way to many kids games, and I don't think they even care about older gamers as they have the younger audience locked down so I think they just stick to that now.

I used to love nintendo when I was young, (like up to the age of 13) but they just don't appeal to me anymore. I must admit I really liked Wii sports when it first came out though, but it was the only real game I liked on it and didn't take me long before I sold the Wii.

Never too old for Mario, Zelda, and Sonic. But I agree, Nintendo simply doesn't invest in any particular "mature" or "cinematic" experiences. It's definitely a shame, I think it is really holding them back from being even more successful and gives everyone the impression that they are stuck in the past. After all, there is no reason family-centric games and more mature experiences can't co-exist.

Do you reckon that is one of the reasons Nintendo don't really make really powerful machines ? Because most of their games don't need realistic graphics.

Maybe that is part of their strategy. But I do wish they would change. I would like to buy a nintendo console again one generation, but only if they make a console that is amazing and with graphics to match it.

While by no means a perfect game experience, Zombi U was very intense and quite enjoyable. It's also quite cheap nowadays.

I also love ZombiU, perfect for survival horror fans. Check out Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends. I can't wait for my LE Wind Waker Friday.

i downloaded windwaker from the Nintendo store when it came out last week. I am really impressed with the graphics upgrades. It looks so damn good, better than most new games that come out on the WiiU these days. This game really needs a sequel, it's just an epic adventure, probably my favorite Zelda game of them all.

Technically had two sequels. Same timeline, same style. Just on the Nintendo DS though (Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks).

It's true, but we need a full console sequel that can be enjoyed on the big screen. I did like the DS games although spirit tracks was not as good as PH in my opinion.

The off the TV connection is a real disappointment if what you say is true. That was probably the one feature I really want out of a nexgen console. Sometimes you just want to lie down in bed or take a long dump. Hope Nintendo beefs up the connection somehow with a optional add-on of some sort. I'd definitely pay for it.

I need to get Zombie U.

I'm still waiting for Darksiders 2 Wii U to drop in price.
I picked this up for $20 at Best Buy back in March, I must have gotten lucky. I'm surprised that the price hasn't dropped much.
