The Sony blog has detailed the sci-fi horror game, SOMA, exclusively for the PS4. There's a trailer for it after the story.

Hi, I am Thomas Grip, creative director at Frictional Games, an indie studio based in Sweden. We have been crafting horror games since 2006 and are probably most famous for having created Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Previously, we have only developed for PC, but this time our new title will be released for PS4 as well!

For the last three years, we have been working on a game called SOMA. All that time, this project has remained a secret — it’s a great relief to finally be able to talk about it. This game is by far the most ambitious and thrilling project we have ever undertaken.

“SOMA is meant to chill you to your core, and confront you with questions about your very existence.”

So, what exactly is SOMA? Briefly stated, it is a sci-fi horror game played from a first person perspective. You are not a space marine though; you’re a normal, very exposed person trapped in a nightmarish world. SOMA is a game about exploration, survival and immersing you inside an interactive narrative.

That short description does not really do the game justice though. In order to properly explain why I’m so excited, we need to dig a bit deeper.

In all of our previous games, the setting and themes have been by-products. We started with the core gameplay, then created high level aspects that fit with that. While a lot of good can come from this approach, it makes it very hard to approach tougher subjects.

SOMA is meant to be a proper sci-fi game, and to get that right we couldn’t let the themes be an afterthought. My favorite works of sci-fi are the ones that use fantastic worlds to probe important issues in a way that down-to-earth settings just cannot. Great sci-fi authors like Asimov, Dick and Heinlein all do this. We want to give SOMA this quality as well.

“How can the feeling of subjective experience arise from a chunk of flesh?”

The subject that SOMA will discuss is consciousness. Personally, I find it the most profound questions that it is possible to ask. “How can the feeling of subjective experience arise from a chunk of flesh?” Exploring this further takes us to questions such as “Can machines be conscious?” and “Do we have free will?” It quickly gets very disturbing, and is ideal for a futuristic horror setting. It is the kind of sci-fi that we want to make.

From the start, we knew that this could not just come through background story or dialog. We want you to play through this. It must be an integral part of the gameplay, not just fluff.

Part of this comes through the game’s monsters. You will encounter a number of strange creatures, each an embodiment of an aspect of our themes. In order to survive the journey, you need to understand how they work and in the process take on extremely unsettling subjects.

Our goal is for SOMA to not just be another carnival ride of cheap scares. It is meant to chill you to your core, and confront you with questions about your very existence.

To track the development more closely, follow us on Twitter or check our blog. Many more strange things will emerge before our 2015 release.

I've seen gameplay from Penumbra and Amnesia and it looked horrible..
I mean it looks awesome, but no way I'm gonna play those games because they look way to scary, horrible as in scary. :p

Really good catch by Sony to get Frictional Games on consoles.. :)
It's not PS4-exclusive tough, it says on the blog they've only made PC-games before, but this time they're making it for PS4 aswell. :)

Looks and sounds interesting....Will have to keep an eye on this one.

That video is a great reason why you don't accept rides from strangers wearing thick horn rimmed glasses driving old school cars or vans.

All it says is that it's coming to PS4 as well as the originally planned PC release. It also says it's not coming until 2015, so odds are high it'll come to X1 as well. Gotta lot of time to fix the voice acting and tidy up the visuals.

assuming=right?

that's news to me

He said "so odds are high it'll come to X1 as well." which is true. Like for an example how long do you think Deep Down and Deadrising 3 remain exclusive? The game isn't produced by Sony.

But he had to come into the thread and right away point out this.

That be like me going into a TitansFall thread and saying its coming to PS4.

Maybe it will come but that wasn't the point and yes I think its obviously possible that this,DD,DR3 and TF will be multi-console.

I still haven't played Amnesia. I'd probably cry if I did. Maybe sometime this month in the spirit of Halloween.

I don't see anything wrong with Astro's post.

But if it's exclusive, cool. I always wanted to try Amnesia. They should port both of those games over as well.

I came in "right away" to see the information and details. Upon looking into them I found it wasn't quite as cut and dry as the OP described, so I commented on it.

And without evidence, that'd be foolish as EA/MS/Respawn have said it's exclusive. That's not the same thing as here none of the parties involved actually said exclusive.

They said they are looking into doing exactly that.

Valliance looks like a bit of a hypocrite here.

Astro's point is valid here as are Valliance's points in the Killer Instinct thread.

Take your own advice V.

Also the point about charging right into the Titanfall thread and claiming it will come to the PS4 eventually, happened.

You messing up D...
I pointed out obvious flaws with KI. TOTALLY different smmfh

Titanfall is not exclusive, it's coming to 360/Xbone/PC at launch - and Zampella allready said Playstation would see the game later at around 2:55 mark here: http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/aevcwo/gt-tv-titanfall
And when pressed he confirmed they'd look at other platforms after launch.
So clearly that's a timed exclusivity deal.

Deep Down is only on PS4, there is no X1 version according to Yoshinoro Ono.

Clearly, if it's a timed exclusive deals they usually can't talk about other versions until the end of the deal is allmost up, but at TGS Capcom also said SCEJ developers have helped Capcom with production - so chances are that might be a true exclusive.

Soma is PC/PS4, and no other platforms mentioned yet.
It's safe to assume it will be a port for Linux/Mac sometime down the line, since they have a person usually doing those ports - but studio is way to small to just assume that it's also coming to Xbone, they are 5 and a half employees working full time, hence why it's a long time between their games. :-/

Yeah, I could swear we read an article stating that Deep Down was coming to the Xbox One. and sorry mate, I'm not a believer in Microsoft allowing Titanfall to hit another competing console aside from PC.

In other news....
This Soma game looks uber creepy but it still needs a bit of polish.
