"The [earlier] patent sparked a lot of speculation, but as we mentioned, patents don't necessarily mean that the proposed technology is going to be used. Sometimes, companies simply patent something so that the idea is safeguarded from the competition. However, the fact that Sony has filed another patent -- published just yesterday and again, authored by PS4 system architect Mark Cerny -- lends a lot of weight to the aforementioned speculation."

PS5 backwards compatibility all but confirmed by newly discovered Sony patent

Earlier this month, a patent filed by Sony seemed to suggest that the company was working on a backwards compatibility program for PS5, the inevitable next-gen follow up to its hugely successful console, the PS4. While it didn't outright confirm anything, a second Sony patent recently discovered online (via GearNuke) has corroborated our suspicions that the PS5 will indeed be backwards compatible, especially as this one explicitly mentions backwards compatibility upfront.

Titled “Simulation of legacy bus operation for backward compatibility”, the patent was registered at the same time as the previous one, but was only published this week, and relates to a method which emulates the internal communications of a legacy system (i.e. old Sony hardware) for the company's new technology.

The patent also refers to the ability to adjust the performance of legacy technology on updated hardware, which could be related to Sony's discovered plans for “Remastering by Emulation", i.e. digitally remastering PS4 titles running on PS5 via backwards compatibility. Think about how the Xbox One can play old Xbox 360 games at higher framerates and 4K resolutions, and you get the idea.

And, as with the other patent discovered earlier this month, the online document also mentions Mark Cerny - lead architect of the PS4 - in the workings of the process, which is further evidence that this method relates to PlayStation itself. Taken together, these patents suggest the writing is on the wall for PS5 backwards compatibility.

Seems cool but how will licensing affect it? I feel somewhere in the timeline something g changed denying console makers the rights to just allow anything to “just flip a switch” allowing all games to play out of the box.

Maybe they’ll do a one time license fee up front, kinda how the first Xbox got around paying for the dvd license by passing it on to the consumer (the dvd remote/adapter). Which I guess is why you have to download the license/app now, maybe because it’s supposed to be on the box from the get go but no where is it on any of the ONE units...but I digress, yay BC

Full bc with the possibility of enhancements to more than PS4 games?

check m8 next gen

No wonder Nintendo and MS are embracing.

But, what about the children? ;)

Hmmm, what will Nintendo’s and MS babies look like? Will they call their first child Akira or Tesuo?

Sorry, at work and wicked bored ;P

Really don't care much about PS1-PS3 games but PS4 yeah I do hope those work and maybe even can be enhanced in some way on PS5, I've got so many digital games it'd be nice just to have the option to play them later.

I agree. But my cut off is PS2. I bet some PS3 games at 4K would still look nice.

If they are upgraded yeah, if they are just flat 720p or less games they'll look uglier than you remember :) I went through that with a few X1/360 BC games, some look better than others but damn the witcher 2 looked awful before it got the 4K upgrade lol. Actually it's strange, some of the 360 games that are BC look ok but some really seem to look worse than they did on the 360, I guess you can't expect perfection when using emulation though. Games like Kingdom of Amalur look pretty much how I remember but The Witcher 2 and a few others looked blurrier and just messier all around before they got some special attention to make them pretty again :)

Your probably right. There are game from launch this gen that are hard on the eyes when played now. Like BF4 on XB1.

You should try Bad Company 2 on the X1, that game looked good by last gen standards but it looks so messy on BC, I know I'm probably remembering it looking better than it did but something just looks really bad about it now.

Having experienced BC on the X, I'm not all that excited about it personally. I found that even though the old games were dramatically enhanced, I didn't really want to play them over again. I'd played them before, they were a good experience at the time, but I didn't feel like going through them again. It was cool to play them again, see the visual enhancements, and stoke some old memories, but the joy faded after a few hours. I'd rather have a new adventure, vs. one I already had.

Maybe I'd enjoy having a similar experience available on the PS5, even if it only lasts a few hours. Not a big deal, but a nice little add-on feature. Otoh, I don't have the history with Playstation that I do with Xbox, so the desire to revisit old games is their catalog isn't very strong.

So personally, it's not much of a factor for me. But I understand it's a selling point and a big PR issue, and that a lot of people care about it. I'm glad Sony is providing it, for those reasons.

You gotta have the library of PlayStation for it to be significant.

Last gens library was much better than this gens. Hell Nintendo probably have more higher rated games than Sony do in only 2 years.

No need to go TD here and just admit bc should have been on both consoles from the start.

Yeah, I get that too. there are a couple that I would like to play again but when something new comes out those immediately get pushed to the back burner and forgotten about again. I just think that with buying digital becoming such a big thing now a days it'd be nice to have the option to be able to play them later since we can't trade them in like you can with physical.

There are some games that I will always go back to. Half-life 2, Oblivion, Super Ghouls N Ghosts, Halo 3, Mrs. Pac-Man. Lol
But yeah, some other old games should be left in the past.

I hope the PS5 is full BC emulation on 99% of all PS4 games day one and not like MS s***ty BC where we have to beg them to make the games BC for X1.

Well if we all didn't have to worry about licenses and what the game developers and publishers allow to be BC, then it would be a no brainer. These devs all want to make coin on remasters that don't want their games BC :(
