Sony Is Skipping E3 2019

The costs have come down enough for a price drop period.

Anybody can make up stuff like no console drops 100 anymore unless they drop stuff lol.

Sales and costs coming down are what cause price drops.

With sales being the main reason.

Anyone can make up that a console comes down $100 in cost in a year too, see how that works? If you think it's $100 cheaper in one year you are mistaken and that's all there is to it.

Just throwing this out, but a friend of mine said in order for GameStop to make a 1,000 dollar profit, with the ps4 Spider-Man bundle at 199, they have to sell ten...

Retailers usually don't make much on hardware if anything at all, when I worked at gamestop years ago they told me we really didn't make money on consoles and that the profit on new games was like $6 or $8.00 That's why selling used games is so important to video game stores.

Do I think the dated tech used in the Pro and X could have have down up to $100 in a year?
Maybe.

Do I think them waiting till 2020 will bring the costs down?
If the tech is finished this year? ABSOLUTELY

More I’ve thought about it, more I believe this is a miscalculation on Sony’s part. I don't buy “they don’t have anything to show”. We know they have a bunch of 3rd party exclusives or coming to PlayStation first games. Some confirmed and a bunch of rumors. They’ll have more overall exclusives and marketing deals in 2019 and 2020 than Microsoft and Nintendo put together. Why not use this show to highlight those partners? A lot of 3rd parties rely on Sony driving their base to E3 where they can market their games. It’s a party for the gamers and marketing opp for devs.

Google is coming into next gen trying to establish themselves with an open checkbook and we already see Microsoft getting aggressive. This is bad time to be arrogant. Hopefully Sony does a Nintendo style Direct. E3 has transformed into an event for fans more than for investors and Sony would be dumb and arrogant not getting their base to tune in that time of year.

I'm betting they are looking at the numbers and realize that E3 isn't needed for that. I'm guessing that they don't need to spend money around E3 in order to get gamers to watch a youtube video. Honestly, I barely watch E3 live anymore. Just give me the trailers and highlights after it is over.

Plus, what's Sony going to show? The same games as last year, with maybe one or two new things? I know personally I get sick of seeing these games getting 3-4 years of hype at E3. I know some people like it but personally, show me what's coming out in the next 9-12 months. Anything beyond that? Not on my radar right now.

Are we on year 4 or 5 of Death Stranding hype yet? I lose count.

X isn't anywhere near twice as powerful as the Pro :) It's 6TF vs 4.2 as far as disappointed I'm disappointed in the 1st party content not the console. It's not $500 better than the Pro but it's better, I just couldn't justify telling someone who already spent $400 on a Pro to spend another $500 on an X. I can totally see the benefit in getting it over a standard One X though.

I thought it would be 40% more powerful, too, just based on the TF number, but the fact is, the X is turning in 80% to 100% more pixels as the Pro is, on multiple games. RDR2 is a great example of that, but there are half a dozen other examples of games that have roughly twice the performance, compared to Pro. It's a bigger difference than you'd think, just based on TF. Granted, that's the top end, and some devs don't go to the trouble of maximizing the results on X. But when they do, it's a double the pixel difference.

Going strictly by resolution isn't how you compare power though. Twice as powerful would mean resolution, all kinds of substantial graphical enhancements and much better performance not just a few frames here and there etc.

Oh, I wasn't talking about power overall; I was talking about power in terms of visuals, resolution. The X pushes twice the pixels of the Pro. It produces a picture that is twice as good as the Pro. It is "twice as powerful" in that sense.

Ah ok, yeah twice as powerful overall we'd get the res and visual upgrades not a choice, same with performance. It is more powerful there is no disputing that, it also came out a year later and cost $100 more so it should be :)

I will have mixed feelings if Sony releases a new console in 2019. On the one hand, I'd be glad to have a PS5 that could fully handle 4K/HDR. Otoh, I just spent a bunch of money on an Xbox X, so that I could have "the most powerful console in the world" for the next 2 years -- but that would shrink to just 1 year.

I've spent $400-$500 each year for the past 2 years on new consoles. I'm not really excited about doing it again next year, too.
I want them to wait until they can have raytracing implementation. The first one to do that will have a huge advantage.

I don't get what's so big about raytracing. Maybe I should google it.

Lighting, shadows and reflections would be the three major key points. But really it’ll be neat for games like Forza/GT anything going for photo realism, I’d hope they go past that and just give it more style, eye candy that’ll make your eye oh-face and it’ll make you ask “how did they do that..and why”

A good, functional example would be using reflections to see behind you or around corners. Accurate occlusion, more realistic light interaction.

A gameplay application could be being able to hide in a window or doorway, maybe even in a corner when its bright outside because of the way eyes adjust and how shadows gather indoors.

It's going to be the major factor in graphics improvement. You should check out the latest DF comparison on BF5, and see the way the PC just outstrips the one X.

You want to wait another 5-10 years for a new console? no way doing that at on anything affordable in a console is coming anytime soon.

Would rather they didn't skip E3 even if they don't have much to show but what can you do. Didn't like when Nintendo started skipping either but seems like this is where we're headed. Each company doing their own show when they're ready to show something.

Clearly PS5 is coming soon. I can see them announcing it toward the end of 2019 with a spring 2020 release. That's the rumor going around recently. No reason to wait until holiday to launch a console anymore. Look what Nintendo pulled off with the Switch.

Shouldn’t you say it’s not $100 (not $500) better than the Pro? Which honestly, I think it is.

No because what I said was I can't recommend that someone buy the X if they already have a pro because you'd have to spend another $500 to get it and it's not worth it. It is worth upgrading from a base console but not the Pro IMO unless you have the extra money to spend.

Well you said that it’s not $500 better than the Pro. Which is different than saying it’s not worth spending another $500 if you already have the Pro.

But I get what you’re saying and can see someone being perfectly happy with just the Pro.

Read it again ;)

Well, it's only $400 this week.

I think it's worth it. Part of the calculus for me is that I've invested considerable money in a 4K/HDR set, and using the Pro with a 4K/HDR set is kind of weak. It means that for the next couple years, I'm only getting half the picture quality I could be getting. It's sort of like if I bought a high-performance car and then ran it on low-octane, substandard gasoline. I've reduced the practical value of my big purchase (the car). Buying an X means I don't do that. It means I get a lot more out of my TV than I would otherwise (e.g., twice the pixel performance). So, it adds value to my TV.

That's not even considering stuff like BC or GP, which are big values on their own. It also doesn't include intangible reasons like the peace of mind (?) that comes from knowing you've got the best console or knowing you own both consoles so you don't have to miss out on what the other console has.

I think it is as the X offers more overall.
The type of person to buy a Pro type console is the same that would want a X.

I'll let others chime in. I wrote what you did basically word for word.
I read it the same as you
To me it sounded like JinCA was saying it isn't worth it, if you already own the Pro. For those people, it'd be $500 (or $400 now) -- assuming they don't have an X1 they could trade in.

I disagree with that. I think it's well worth it, but i guess I already said that.

If I bought a ps4 (again) today, I'd buy a pro to match my TV. My one X for multiplats (would be stupid not to if not going for trophies) and pro for the amazing exclusives. But considering my huge backlog of amazing multiplats it's hard to justify the purchase of a pro today.

That's fine, I was only saying I can't recommend buying an X if you ALREADY own a Pro, for people who have the extra money that's totally fine but I to me I don't think the X offers enough to make it worth spending ANOTHER $500 on top of the $400 someone already spent on a Pro.

Is it worth an additional $500 when GP is a service you have to pay for and is inflated with a bunch of games you likely would never have wanted to play anyway? You yourself even said BC wasn't as big of a deal as you thought it would be not too long ago. Again it's better to have BC than to not have it but if you don't own any of those old games you have to pay for them again etc.

The One X is a very good console, it's the most powerful one on the market now and will be for at least another year but what big games are coming out in the next year that you know about that will make it worth spending an extra $500? It's not like games on the Pro don't look good, AC Odyssey and RDR2 look very good on the Pro and Sony's first party stuff looks better than anything MS has released so far and shown that's coming in the future.

It's all up to the individual what they want to do, I just couldn't recommend spending the extra $500 especially when we all know the PS5 is coming in the next year to two years and will be a much bigger leap over the One X than the One X is over the Pro.
