Sony Santa Monica Hit With Layoffs

Oh well. That sucks but layoffs are bound to happen at any company. Hopefully they find another job in the business. Sony Santa Monica is about to do work with the PS4. I can't even imagine how amazing the next God of War is going to be. Seems like yesterday i was just waiting for God of War 3 on the PS3 and it didn't disappoint one bit. History repeats itself here.

They've had one team working on the PS4 for 4 years or so now, the game that was sadly cancelled.

Not the same issue, but close enough so I'll post it in this thread.

Sony U.S. Restructures; Will Close 20 Stores
By Steve Smith On Feb 26 2014 - 9:15am
San Diego — Sony Electronics is restructuring “to maintain its competitiveness in an evolving consumer electronics market” in the U.S., and as part of the effort it will shut 20 of its stores.

Sony Electronics confirmed in a statement a total staff reduction of one-third by the end of the calendar year, affecting approximately 1,000 employees across all sites. “In addition, in an effort to further streamline costs and continue focus on existing partner relations, Sony announced the closure of 20 U.S. Sony Stores,” the company said.

Sony said the restructuring is “in line with Sony Corporation’s Feb. 6 earnings announcement outlining an estimated headcount reduction of roughly 5,000 employees globally.”

“While these moves were extremely tough, they were absolutely necessary to position us in the best possible place for future growth,” said Mike Fasulo, president and COO of Sony Electronics, in a statement. “I am entirely confident in our ability to turn the business around, in achieving our preferred future, and continue building on our flawless commitment to customer loyalty through the complete entertainment experience only Sony can offer.”

Sony said in its statement it “continues to drive its industry leadership in premium products across all of CE, including all-things 4K, and further plans to reinforce its market leadership through strengthening its 4K product lineup and bolstering 2K models in 2014, with a continued commitment to the future success of its U.S. television business.”

Sony said it “will place an increased focus on its premium products — including its digital imaging line, high-resolution audio and full suite of professional solutions — while leveraging its strengths in hardware, content and gaming.”

Twenty stores in the U.S. are closing: Tysons, Va.; University Village, Wash.; Galleria Dallas, Texas; Forum Shops, Nev.; Pentagon, Va.; Boca Raton, Fla.; Menlo Park, N.J.; Las Americas, Calif.; Camarillo, Calif.; Aurora, Ill.; Gilroy, Calif.; Central Valley, N.Y.; Wrentham, Mass.; Pleasant Prairie, Wis.; San Marcos, Texas; Cherry Creek, Colo.; Dolphin, Fla.; Century City, Calif.; Valley Fair, Calif.; and Comcast, Pa.

Eleven stores remain open, including its New York City flagship store and its SPE store at the Culver City, Calif., studios.

Sony operated 44 retail stores at the chain’s peak in 2008, excluding outlets, and was the 20th largest CE retailer in 2012, according to TWICE’s Top 100 rankings. Sales totaled $829 million, down 7 percent from the prior year, as the company began closing locations.

Sony did not provide further details on other organizational changes regarding this announcement.

Something must have been amiss if they finally cancelled it after 4 years. At 4 years in they'd hopefully be far enough along for the game to see daylight.

4K product... I am afraid things are not going well in future for Sony. 4K seems overkill unless you have like over 70inch TV, & how many people need such a big TV.

Maybe we'll get to see some leaked snippets of the game that got cancelled. I'd be interested to see what it exactly is, sucks when new IP's get cancelled.

I'm going to guess we won't see a SSM game till late 2015 at the earliest now. I can see why Sony have given them a shake up as their output compared to other Sony studio's with less people is worse. 2 games out last gen compared to ND with 4, GG 2 but released 1 this gen and have a new I.P in works for 2 years+, Evolution with 3 games and Driveclub coming out, Sucker punch with 2 but Infamous SS is right around the corner. For their size and budget they should be bringing out around 3 games at least. Still I would love to see some actual gameplay of this I.P

Usually when you go into the next generation, you are supposed to up your team numbers, not downsize. This is definitely not a good sign for Order 1868.

I doubt it'll have any effect on The Order, Ready at Dawn now has over 100 people on their team and I doubt anyone essential to that game was laid off from SSM. SSM is also still hiring btw so it's not like that studio is going away. It's likely that they cancelled the project they were working on because it wasn't where it needed to be and decided to bring in new people to work on something else, basically starting over unfortunately.

Sony to reportedly offload its old Tokyo HQ for some quick cash
BY MATT BRIAN @M4TT FEBRUARY 28TH, 2014 AT 8:06AM ET 0

It appears Sony isn't quite done selling off assets in a bid to reverse its financial losses. Just weeks after it sold its VAIO PC business, the company is reportedly in talks to offload another one of its properties: its former headquarters in central Tokyo. The deal could net Sony more than 15 billion yen ($146.5 million), adding to the $2.3 billion it recouped from the sale of its New York and Osaka buildings last year. Locals have blasted the potential move, however, arguing that the company's "birthplace," where founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka worked on the Walkman and Trinitron TV, should be exempt from its restructuring efforts. The proceeds could be used to cushion the $1.1 billion loss Sony expects to make in its current financial year, putting no pressure whatsoever on the new Xperia Z2 family to sell well when it hits stores in April.

I can just picture this guy refreshing google every 5 minutes with "bad sony news"

Well. With the way this gen is going so far you really can't blame the guy. He has to make himself feel better somehow.

Wouldn't be surprise if a Sony TV dropped and hit someone toe, he will post it as negative news as well.
