Someone posted a nasty spoiler in the other thread without using tags. If I had read that, this would have been a big problem. Anyway, this thread is free reign to discuss the film without spoiler tags.

Han made me cry. I will just admit that here.

Yeah, that scene. OMG. Kylo was easily what Anakin should have been in the second trilogy. I reckon Rae is Leia's daughter. That scene with the flash back when she touch's Luke's light sabre i reckon was Luke or someone hiding her on the planet.

I was more stunned that it happened. I mean, I felt sad also but the feeling of being stunned was more than feeling sad.

Agreed. At first I didn't actually think it would happen. Kylo seemed to actually be torn. The acting was really good. When Kylo wouldn't give Han his light sabre though my heart just dropped and I knew it was over for Han. I'm still sad. Legit shed tears in the movie.

I am thinking that Rey is Luke's daughter. Obviously she is full of the force and it would make sense that Leia sent her to give the light saber to Luke. I suspect the next movie is Luke training her in the force to lead to another showdown with Kylo.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this movie had so much of the story about Han Solo, I wasn't expecting more than a cameo appearance. Seeing the Millenium Falcon flying about was another huge pleaser for me. I plan on seeing this movie at least 2 more times...1 at the IMAX and 1 in 3D just so I have experienced it in all ways. My wife is calling this her favorite SW movie, no doubt the strength of Rey will add many female fans. For me, ESB still had the biggest impact on me but this one ranks right along with the OT.

I kind of thought it would be cool if instead they stole Slave 1. That would get Han's attention.

Oh. That's a good point. She could she easily be Luke's daughter. I'm still betting she is Leias daughter though. We can revisit this next year maybe :-)
Honestly though the movie blew me away. The scene with the x wings flying across the lake and going into combat mode nearly made me jump out of my seat with excitement. My son turned around and said "dad, the rebels are so cool". Lol

The scene where Poe shot down everyone was awesome.

I think it's Luke's daughter. Or it's Luke AND Leia's daughter.:yspooked:

Lol. No fun like Alderaun fun!

I don't she's Luke's though. I think they robbed a bit of the canon with the twins and Ben. I also think after this trilogy is done well see the story of Kylo and his fall.

Also, didn't like Ren's voice. That's really my only nitpick.

She does have a bit of that upper class clipped British accent. She was well able to pull off the emotional reaction though.

Such a good move, loved it.

Am I the only one who doesn't really like Ren though? Maybe it's that the revealed who he is so quick, or that they unmasked him so quick, or that he just seems weak, but he definitely doesn't seem like he has the same affect as Vader did. I think this could all change after he goes though more training with Snoke.

I don't think they got this point across all that match but it was sorta implied that Ren was basically still a rookie in many ways. Gifted with the force, but far from the level of Vader. I'm guessing that'll be the major theme throughout the main trilogy, Rey and Ren's rise to full blown masters of the force/lightsabers.

Overall though, really enjoyed the film and I don't consider my self a Star Wars fan (I don't dislike it by any means, just wouldn't say I'm a big fan of the franchise/characters). Some really awesome action sequences, especially that one with Poe on the foresty planet I can't remember the name of at the moment. But it has to be said that the plot was kinda scarily similar to the first film in quite a few ways.

I think it's pretty clear that Rey is Luke's daughter, if not they will have to answer a lot of questions on why she's not the one. The real question I have on the issue is whether Rey knows that or not. Some scenes do imply that she is hiding her childhood from us and other characters, something she knows already.

It seems like lots of people didn't like that Ren revealed himself so early, but personally I loved it more than anything. That made it absolutely clear that he is not a Vader, at least not yet. If he was as good as Vader, no way the climax would have worked. It also makes the ending work. We have a dark master and an apprentice, and them a good master and an apprentice, with both apprentices still being imperfect. It sets up a good foundation to where the next movie should go.

I think this is like a Re-Spin of A New Hope. Lot's of familiar parallels, but with a few tweaks and changes.

It's been alluded to that Storm Troopers are conscripts that under go a conditioning process. When Kylo Ren feels a pull to the light or doubts the Path of the Dark Side, he pleads to Vader(what's left of him anyway). What if Snoke isn't as subtle as Palpatine and just used a combination of the Force and brainwashing on him?

Why does he wear that helmet? Does Ren see that as a weird symbol of power when in fact it's a mind conditioner? Maybe that's why Finn's commander got mad just for seeing him take off his helmet?

Actually, I could see this as a way that we even see Vader in the next movie. It will be like a twist on the scene of when Luke saw Vader on Dagobah, except instead of being like Luke who was fearful of seeing his face behind Vader's mask, Ren wants to embrace it. I wonder if that is some trippy s*** Ren experiences when he asks Vader to show him the power of the darkside?

Ah. Yeah. Wasn't mad about his. I think they wanted him to have the spoiled

kid underneath the serious sith demeanour. It worked in that regard.

He makes me think of the idea of young foolish people who join ISIS before they realize they're entering a world of bats*** crazy people.

I originally posted this (with spoiler tags) in the main thread. Here they are again:

My initial thoughts are that the script at times seems penned by a super Star Wars fanboy. There's an atmosphere of modernity that permeates the entire film, particularly from Finn and Poe. In fact, they seem the most earth-like people in the entire movie. This however blends well with the idea that decades have passed since Episode 6, and this is the story of a new generation of heroes and villains.

I loved so many of the shots in the film. They tried to give us a sense of how epic and grand this story is with ultra wide shots, showing characters and ships as tiny little objects in the frames. They were gorgeous. And the music was fantastic, but oddly distracting in some scenes.

Now for some thoughts on the various characters in the movie:

Kylo Ren

I thought it was scary and simultaneously hilarious how he wrecks everything and loses his s*** when he gets pissed. The man is just as unstable as his lightsaber. And speaking of which, why was there no mention of him constructing his lightsaber? (side note: I liked how he used his lightsaber's vents to hurt Finn during their battle).

At any rate, I wish we got to see some of Leia's gusto in him, or Han's bravado in there, and not just Anakin's characteristics and personality traits. He is brooding, emotive, and intimidating, not to mention powerful in the use of the Force.

The scene when he kills his father was odd to me. I didn't believe that he was truly struggling with the choice to come back to the Light side, despite his admission that he was (and of course, despite the obvious cue of the lighting/darkening from the sun). This is one scene I'm going to examine more carefully on my next viewing.

I wish the movie showed us more about how Ben became Kylo, but perhaps we'll get another prequel/sequel trilogy that fills in the gap between Episodes 6/7?

Lastly, I can't wait to see how he changes between this film and the next.

Rey

Isn't Rey just perfect for the Star Wars universe? There was a scene where the camera tightens on her face, and she gives this steely gaze with her piercing eyes. That scene really captures how Rey grew from a naive, wide-eyed scavenger into a powerful Jedi, just within the events of this movie. Rey in many ways reminds me of Luke, and perhaps this is not just coincidence, but then again, maybe there is no genealogical connection - just a Force-based one?

Rey's vision when she first touched the lightsaber was incredible. But then again, it seemed like it was more like a teaser trailer for the next movie.

I loved how Rey was a gear-head. It's a necessary skill as a scavenger. But when the heck did she learn how to fly?

Poe Dameron

When Finn said Poe "didn't make it," I honestly thought Poe was dead. How does a person get ejected from a Tie Fighter while getting stripped of his jacket? So when he re-appeared in his Black X-Wing, I thought, "POE IS A CLONE?!" But NOPE. Poe did indeed get ejected from his Tie, and somehow got stripped of his jacket.

Poe may not be a clone, but I believe he IS strong with the Force. We haven't seen a pilot like Poe since Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars. And although Poe couldn't fully resist Kylo's interrogation, I think everyone's use of the Force may manifest differently. Then again, maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Finn

The sweatiest dude in the Galaxy is also one of the best characters in the Star Wars universe. Did you notice how Finn seemed to sense Kylo Ren even before Kylo's command shuttle came into view? Did you notice Kylo staring at Finn for some time before leaving the scene? Did you notice how Finn also somehow drew himself to Poe, and then to Rey? I believe Finn is also a Force user. He doesn't have a strong a grasp on it, but he's got some knack of hooking up with people I believe are Force users as well. Then again, Han was the same way as well, and Han wasn't a Force user.

BB-8

This little droid was wonderful, and I must have a full-sized statue of him in my house.

Phasma

Let's face it. Phasma is the new Jar Jar, not the new Boba Fett.

Snoake

I didn't realize he was a hologram. Then I thought, "The dude HAS to be a tiny guy, like Yoda."

Maz

Maybe Maz is the new Jar Jar?

just saw this last night. Wow better than I expected. It feels so close to the original films. But solo being killed Nooo!!!

I know Han isn't a Jedi but he reference the force being true I wonder if he'll come back as ghost type thing like ben Kenobi did? And later Yoda and anikan

Just got home from watching. Really really loved it, but Han :-( :ycry:

I don't think Han will come back. Doesn't seem like that'd be his style.

I am glad he played such a big part in this movie. Going in I figured it'd be a pretty small one.
