Well, Lucas didn't even direct them all at first. He did the first movie than let other directors handle it. He wanted to be drive the creative vision of it, but not direct them.

Until the Prequels where people started throwing a fit like they are now.
The prequels just didn't have the magic the originals had, they had better special effects and a great villain character that was killed off way too soon but there were things lacking that people had come to expect. They seemed more like kids movies with a little bit of darkness thrown in, it didn't help that they picked people who couldn't act to play Anakin, I can forgive the young kid because it's hard to find child actors that are consistently good but Hayden Christensen was a mess.

I think Hayden was in Jumper and seemed a capable actor.

I think some of the issue was with Lucas directing and a really sh;t script. I mean the poor guy had to delivery some awful dialogue.

The path of Anakin's fall played out with him being an immature or gullible fool who just happened to be strong in the Force. It's hard to play off a character like that and be appealing to the audience.

Also, there is the awful final scene which Hayden can't be blamed on after he becomes Darth Vader and yells Noooo!!!!. Yup that is the great James Earl Jones and even with him on board it's so full of cringe.

What happened to the American Dream? It came true.

The prequels were just bad scripts with cringe worthy dialog. We know Portman can act. I honestly think Lucas was going for that high school "in love so much you could puke" type of romance. There's a reason that so many memes came out of that. Just awful, awful dialog.

The new movies are so much better, even if they have some flaws and plot problems. Seriously, sit and watch the entire Phantom Menace at one sitting. You can't do it. Nobody can.

Going to be great seeing Ewan as Obi-Wan again with better scripts and directors. Such a wasted talent in the prequels and honestly he was probably the best thing about them.
