Star Wars Rogue Squadron

I broke down and preordered on Steam. Probably not getting a next gen console if the shipping goes to heck, so this will give me something to play.

A lot of the early reviews compare it to the really old games which is great. Tie Fighter was one of the greatest games I ever played back in the Lucasarts days.

those reviewers who compare it to the old Lucasarts games like Tie Fighter are spot on. This game is the spiritual successor to those classics.

Any idea how this will fair on Game Pass (EA)?

At the minute EA don’t release new titles into Access. It will probably be in there around Christmas or early new year. All this could change soon though.

Oh my, the VR mode makes this incredible. I had a chance to get the PSVR version early and will double dip on PC.

Remember when we all wanted this day to come after the battlefront VR mission?

This was the VR demo, and it blew minds years ago and squadrons is even better.

I still get people that ask me about that demo above. It literally made people speechless so many times. Now we get 8 hours in it

Just more intuitive and immersive. The problem with claiming something an advantage is that no two people are equal. I for example play alot of racing games so looking with the stick is second nature to me. D-V-ANT doesn't really play games that require stick looking. So, it might give a small advantage over D-V-ANT for a few days as he adjusts, but he will adjust.

At the the end of the day it is just more intuitive, which just adds to immersion. Any early days advantage will soon dissipate

It would definitely give VR players an advantage in maneuverability. In the same way racing games work. VR gives you actual depth perception, that's why racers get better lap times in VR than outside VR because you can tell exactly the distance of a bend. Flying around debris would work much the same, and is absolutely an advantage for VR because it removes some of the guess work. A normal screen cannot reproduce that effect. Not to mention, the scale of the game is actually real, a Tie Fighter is dozens of meters tall, a star destroyer thousands etc.

Now, having said that, will it be a huge advantage? I don't think so. But definitely real.

Played through the first big mission and I'm impressed. This is complicated and deep. I'm glad I got it on PC with my joystick and throttle. I have a feeling I'm going to be spending a lot of time mapping controls. This is really not a casual Star Wars game. It is hectic and fast paced, yet rewarding.

I think once I get the controls mapped and learn them it will be good, but definitely a learning curve. Just flying the ship around, managing the systems and not hitting any of the big ships is a task in itself, then you start fighting other fighters. Lots of fun.

I really wonder how the multiplayer will play? I definitely want to get deeper into the campaign before trying for sure.

Is this or will this be available on EA play?

Apparently there's a bug on PC that adds a 20% deadzone to the joystick. EA is going to patch it. Apparently it is just a bad config file, but you can't edit it without setting off the anti-cheat. If you're wondering why the stick feels so mushy, that's why. Hopefully they can hotfix that asap.

Is there any HOTAS controller for Xbox that will work with this?

Already regretting buying on Xbox because I believe that the game would be infinitely better in VR.

There's a clunky hack to get around the deadzone issue (you use a utility to change the x and y axis on the stick to be a rotation axis and the deadzone is normal). Having a lot more fun with the game. There's a learning curve, but it is rewarding.

The battles are hectic and intense. When your target is dodging through debris in space, the combat is amazing. Followed a bomber into a hollowed out ship and it was so neat.

Without VR, I'm finding the old "boom and zoom" to work best. Basically, use max speed (transferring power is key) to engines and run out of range, turn around, and strafe back at the enemy. I notice the AI does this a lot which is cool. Getting into turning fights can be nasty.

I meant PSVR, even though I was thinking of selling that soon to consolidate before my Quest 2 gets here.

Downloaded the trial to this game, need to check it out. Also D-V-ANT that's a pricey joystick!!!! Does it have autopilot or something?

yeah, it's wasn't especially cheap but believe it or not that's basically the entry level price for a HOTAS controller on a console. Plus this is the only one supported by Microsoft on xbox/series x. The playstation one is 50 bucks more expensive again.

Joystick prices have exploded lately. Between the pandemic slowing down production, combined with MS Flight Sim and this game driving up demand, prices are way higher than normal. Prices on Amazon are easily 2-3x normal.
