Star Wars The Acolyte

The Acolyte, Headland says, takes place roughly 100 years before The Phantom Menace: "A lot of those characters haven't even been born yet. We're taking a look at the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don't know much about. My question when watching The Phantom Menacewas always like, 'Well, how did things get to this point?' How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?"

Headland describes The Acolyte as a mystery thriller set in a prosperous and seemingly peaceful era, when the galaxy is still sleek and glistening. "We actually use the term the Renaissance, or the Age of Enlightenment," she says. Jedis were not always ascetic monklike figures living selflessly and bravely. "The Jedi uniforms are gold and white, and it's almost like they would never get dirty. They would never be out and about," Headland says. "The idea is that they could have these types of uniforms because that's how little they're getting into skirmishes."

Star Wars: The Acolyte, the upcoming Disney+ series set during the end of the High Republic era, will make its way to Disney+ in 2024. While we weren't given an exact date, the cast and crew behind the series stopped by Star Wars Celebration to share a few details as to what fans can expect.

Star Wars: Acolyte's series creator Leslye Headland shared that she had always wanted to "delve into the Star Wars universe and tell the story of this entire world that I loved so much from the perspective of the bad guys."

"What i pitched to Kathleen Kennedy was Frozen meets Kill Bill. Shockingly, she didn’t kick me out of the building," Headland said. It's High Republic near the beginning of the prequels and an exciting part of the timeline. "This is when the bad guys are outnumbered. They are the underdogs. I’m really excited for you guys to see things you haven’t seen in live action yet.”

She also noted it was "the furthest back in time we've been in live action," and that there will be "lots of Jedi." At lease one of these Jedi will be a wookiee played by Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo, as it's always been a dream of Headland to tell the story of one.

There was also a clip shown, and it featured Lee Jung-jae's character saying, "The Force is powerful. It is a power we must respect." There are also big fights, aliens, Jung-jae leading a bunch of Jedi, and more.

way of the Jedi. And I think that you saw that with [Rian Johnson's] film. Do you know what I mean? Like, I think that, especially in that moment, people were very nervous about saying this particular institution may not be the light and perfect, stunning group of heroes that are totally nobly intentioned. And one thing that I think Dave would say is that they are fallible. That's really the story that George told with the prequels, right? The fall of this particular group."

"But I think when you think you're going to tell the story about bad guys, and the Jedi's might be the antagonist to those Jedi's, I think that makes people nervous. But it didn't make Kathy nervous. And I will say that in that room, when I pitched her, it was probably one of the most exciting things because it felt like a conversation, and less like I was up for a job. It felt much more like, 'Okay, but what are you going to do about this? And what are you going to do about that?' And so I was able to fold in what I know about Star Wars, and what I love about Star Wars, into what she's always pushing for, which is, 'What's the emotional throughline?'"

Will watch, for a second there I thought it was Ken Watanabe, he’d be perfect for something like this, serious, grounded and darker in tone

Wait, did they say that? I’ve never seen them either
Can I ask why you haven't seen the originals?

Like..............WHY?!?!?! haha. Just such a weird thing to me I'm not sure if you're a younger person than most of us on here?

Young people I work with think the Prequels are better than the originals and it's just like "wtf?" for me. And yet they honestly feel that way and that's fine........I mean I guess it's ok even though it's so wrong you know?

I was a kid/preteen with the prequel series. I remember waiting in line with my siblings and mum for the midnight showings for them. Seeing people dressed up from the OG trilogy. Oh and running in to get the best seats. Cos the smaller ya are they’re ok with you hoping over seats lol

I remember a friend letting me borrow like the latest and last version of the og three on tape cos his family are hardcore fans.

I tried watching the first one and thought it dragged on and kinda boring…so I paused it and never continued. lol my siblings feel the same but they’ve at least seen them. Or at least “a new hope”.

I may watch it one day. When, I dono.

I feel like I’m my niece, when I tried showing her back to the future, I put it on and she’s like “ugh, it’s an old movie” but in the end she loved it and we watched all of them.

Maybe I’ll watch the og three with her. Her trilogy is of course the new one. But one of her fav sci-fi media is “the Orville”

That sounds about right.

It's what you grew up with.

I'm not even a Star Wars nerd in any way. The younger people I know who like the prequals more than the OG movies are way more into the lore etc.

I actually think the new Star Wars movies are better than the prequals and capture the OG vibes better, and I can have my head torn off for that haha!

You really owe it to yourself to watch the original Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

I remember everyone (the nerds really) pissing and moaning about the Ewoks way back when. I had no problem with it. I like the Disney offshoots a lot!
