YouTube Red has ordered to series Cobra Kai, a continuation of the classic 1984 film The Karate Kid, with Ralph Macchio and William Zabka on board to reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the 10-episode series landed at the streaming service after a bidding war with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and AMC.

Set to premiere in 2018, Cobra Kai is described as a half-hour comedy that takes place 30 years after the All Valley Karate Tournament. A down-on-his-luck Johnny decides to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo. Meanwhile, Daniel finds himself struggling without his mentor Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). Soon enough, their onetime rivalry is reignited, and the two decide that the best way to deal with their feud is through — you guessed it — karate.

Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine), Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) will serve as writers on the series, with Macchio and Zabka on board as EPs. The project hails from Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, which also developed the 2010 film remake starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.​





 
This would have been really cool about 15 years ago...
 
Machio is a phenomenal actor. He's also very funny. The commentary him and Morita did for Karate Kid was amazing. The best commentary I've every listend to.

I met Zabka at RI Comic Con a year ago, and when I asked him if he was up to anything, he smiled and said he couldn’t talk about it yet. I thought that was his way of saying ‘nothing.’ Glad to see I was wrong!

I thought this was the last we’d see of the character:

I’m going to the sneak preview tonight! Is anyone else going? It’s at select theaters across the country. They play the original movie first, then the first episode of the new series afterwards.

I had no clue there was going to be a sneak peak. If I had known, I definitely would’ve gone.

They played the first 2 episodes first, then the movie. Each episode is 30 minutes.

As a huge OG KK fan, I really liked both episodes. I don’t know how long the storyline can go for, but they should get at least one solid season.

The previews were honestly like a modern-day extension of the movie. Johnny is now stuck in the past, driving his beat-up Firebird, listening to 80s music, and watching 80s movies (like Iron Eagle!). Daniel is now successful but doesn’t really fit into his rich family’s lifestyle. The only thing missing is Miyagi, but there are direct mentions of him.

It all makes for some really good writing, and a lot of potential, and if you liked KK, I think you’ll really enjoy the series. The theater was almost full, and everyone clapped when the previews ended.
 
Got through all of it, thought it was great...especially the last 2 minutes of the last episode. Awww yeah.

First 2 episodes are free on YouTube, but all 10 episodes are up if you have YT Red. But they are offering a week trial or something like that.

If you are a fan of the original, I think you’ll love it. Some of the stuff is predictable, but the interplay between Daniel and Johnny is the best. They have some absolutely classic scenes together.

I love that video.

One cool thing about the series is the main character focus is Johnny. You learn a ton about his character, including his childhood, and I came away from it really empathizing with him.

I found myself wondering if they took some tips from that video, because that’s the way Johnny sees a lot of his history with Daniel.
 
I finished the whole season. I thought it was great. I will say I was a little disappointed with the last episode as they followed the same formula as the original movie. I was hoping for something different.
 
I just finished it. Daniel and his student are schmucks. Cobra Kai 4 Life.
 
Sam is the real villain of this show

Also real lame that Daniel learns no lessons from any of this. Makes Miyagi look like a bad teacher.
