My work used to require me to have a blackberry. Now I don't need to have one. I've always wanted an iphone (I want a phone that works) but everyone I know with a Samsung galaxy tells me to go with one of those.

I probably split my time up:
80% - Checking and sending e-mails (POP/IMAP - no exchange)
10% - Trying to read the news on my awful blackberry browser
10% - Checking my calendar

As you guys probably know, blackberry's app ecosystem is so messed up it's very hard to get functioning apps even for things like Facebook.

My inclination is to think i'd be happy with both. I'm not sure I like how the iPhone receives e-mails but I doubt a Galaxy would be better.

Can anyone sway my mind one way or the other?

If you aren't heavily tied into Google services, you could give Windows Phone a look, a bunch of us here use them and they are great. Not as many apps, but a vast majority of the popular ones,,plus achievements from xbox branded games lol

This is the phone for you then.

I have a personal Gmail but otherwise don't really care for their web services. Do Windows phones have a really good interface or something?

It's all preference. I like the WP UI design style, it uses Live tiles..if you like W8 start menu look then you would like it. Email is pretty painless, have a couple of email accounts added into the phone. Lots of videos out there about the Lumia 920 and other windows phones if you wanted to take a look. The Lumia 1020 just came out too, with a 41mp phone..ifyou like taking pictures.

Android is good if you like to tinker and customize every detail though

Well, I typed out an entire response recommending Google's Nexus 4 because you can buy it cheap without a contract, but I just looked and they are completely out of stock.

If you're with a GSM service (ATT/T-Mobile in USA), Google's phones really are great and their next Nexus is around the corner.

My 3 year old recently threw my Blackberry Z10 and shattered the screen, giving me the perfect reason to head back to Android.

I'd like Blackberry to succeed, but that ship has sailed.
