The company can easily port games to the PS4 and Xbox One, so not playing older games on new consoles isn't a problem.

Take-Two Interactive chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick isn’t worried about the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One’s inability to play games from previous generations. The sales figures for both next-generation platforms have been highly positive, and while some people are concerned that a lack of backwards compatibility will slow the adoption rate for consumers with a significant last-generation collection, Zelnick argues (via GameIndustry International) that this just won’t be an issue moving forward.

"I don't see it as a problem at all, and certainly we have the physical ability to port, and it wouldn't be particularly costly," Zelnick said at an investor presentation at the Credit Suisse' 2013 Technology Conference. "The question is, 'Is there an economic opportunity for us to do so?' I don't think backwards compatibility affects consumers at all."

We’ve seen plenty of older games get polished and ported to the PS3 and Xbox 360, so we shouldn’t be surprised if some pieces of software get similar treatment in the coming years. With
Grand Theft Auto 5 being a last-gen game, Zelnick might consider creating a next-gen versions in the near future since Take-Two has the “physical ability” to do so.

Bring GTA V over and at least support 1080p/30 solid please. Less aliasing too...

GTA V
Diablo 3
State of Decay (this won't happen, their studio is too small, they will release their next game for next-gen though)
Castle Crashers
Super Meatboy
Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
Super Street Fighter 4
Disney Universe
All of the Lego games

It sure effects me. I'd own a PS4 already if it were BC.

Wait, so I can't pop KOTOR into my XB1? Damn. Guess I gotta keep the 360 (or unbox the original Xbox).

I would've purchased GTA V by now if it were BC or on Xbox One.

The fact that it isn't means I passed on the game and anything else that came out in the past 6 months on my 360/PS3.

So it certainly affects me, probably the minority though.

I can already see the fanboy arguments between how GTA V runs on the two next gen consoles. :smash:

I'll believe it when I see it. Until then, the Playstation 4 is thus non-compatible with the PS3, PS2, and PS1.

Doesn't affect me one little bit, not one iota, because I'm a PC gamer and I have the ultimate in backwards compatible gaming machines.

I had thought it was a big deal when migrating to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Now, I don't really care all that much. I guess it may be that I know the really good games will get a remake or the fact that I just don't play games for that long. The only bummer is not being able to play Street Fighter 4 but I can play it in the other room and I don't want to play it with the Xbox One's controller's d-pad anyway.

I'm inclinined to believe him. Doesn't seem to be a big deal to the mass next gen market.

I could really care less myself. I thought how great it was that the 360 was BC with the OXB, it was at first, then when the better "next gen" games started coming out on the 360 I barely touched any OXB games after that. I'm sure it'll be the same this gen too.
The only reason I'm gonna miss any BC is cause my son will lose out on "his" games if I were to sell/trade in my 360 for a XB1

A bunch of PR crap.

Of course it benefits developers. It gives them a good reason to resell you the same thing twice.. You might not pay how much you paid the first time but you are still paying AGAIN.

Do they they really think we are stupid and can't put two and two together?

I really hope GTA V comes out on next gen consoles though. It will be the first time I'll be playing it.. I didn't get it for the 360 because I'm not going to pay for the same game twice.

I think they said they were going to do some backwards compatibility in the future by streaming old games through the cloud. That was supposed to be a couple years down the road though? That would be cool if you could rent/own old games again & at least it might recognized what Arcade games you bought on your current gamertag/possibly let you play them again?

Only problem is your still paying for the games again so I wouldn't really call it BC. I would love it if they some how enabled 360 XBLA games on the XB1.

LOL, a pretty dismissive comment.

"Well we can easily port and then sell it to you again, I don't see how that affects consumers at all!"

Uhhh.. how about..

- Don't want to have to buy a game twice necessarily
- Huge difference between being able to play my games I have bought and waiting around to see what fraction of last gen games get ports
- In the mean time, I have to figure out whether I want to keep my old system around, that can affect my gaming budget as many sell old systems to fund new, as well as my entertainment center.

It's not some huge personal deal to me.. but I'm currently in the process of re-doing my entire entertainment center, buying a new TV stand/furniture, and potentially a new receiver with more HDMI ports, partly motivated by the desire to keep my Xbox 360 and PS3 around.

If PS4/XBO had BC I'd not need to do that. Me = affected. Not crying about it, but silly to say people aren't affected.

However BC has never been a "free" feature to the console manufacturers, and it's not really "Free" to the general public either if they include it. You have 2 options.. either you can't change hardware drastically and have to support old API's on new hardware, or you have to actually physically include old hardware in your design. Neither are optimal for making a great "new" device cost effective and the former can hold back design.

Perhaps this is why they don't seem to care about releasing huge games like RDR and GTAV on PC. They've discovered(as Bunz mentioned)that they can sell you a "Super spectacular definitive HD native 1080p version" on consoles and people will eat it up. PC is(for the most part)forever BC and they can't resell PC gamers the same game outside of a GOTY version with all the DLC.

I don't mind the "HD port" trend at all myself.

Wish they'd actually update more older PC games too.. I don't find modding very reliable, and just simply upping the resolution on an old game can have mixed results. Some re-done textures and other upgraded aspects.. I'd shell out cash for.

I think moving forward it will be more important for these companies to support BC.. with things going more and more DD based it's going to feel that much more "off" that you can't use your old software on your new machine. And really with no need or really no market for these guys spending tons of R&D on some super weird architectures it should be much more feasible. X64 + unified RAM should be a standard for a LONG time.

Yes

If there is a PS5 or next gen Xbox, there is really no excuse why BC shouldn't be possible. Shouldn't cost much to make that happen.

That's basically sums it up for me too. I think a properly developed "HD port" is definitely worth paying for too, and is totally different than a game being BC.
