The 2023 / 2024 NBA Basketball Season Thread

Giannis rules and he kicked some serious ass in The Finals. From almost tearing up his knee to Finals MVP is stuff of legends. Dude had almost half the Bucks points last night AND they covered the spread.

Any word from Jolly?

I started watching The Last Dance recently I’m on episode 8 now. Been a great walk down memory lane with players I haven’t thought about in years. Watching this now knowing all I know over decades of the NBA…. safe to say MJ > LeBron lol
Was about to pop an "agree" with you on how great that doc is, but IDK about your last statement. Lebron is a generational talent, and it's tough to compare their games. MJ was a pretty strict 2 who beat your ass. Lebron plays all positions and can also beat your ass at each one (at his height at least, he's definitely declining).

Anyways, they're both generational talents who rule.

There's no discussion. One is undefeated in June. The other had to buddy up because he wasn't good enough on his own. The bubble championship also is a HUGE *. In reality, "Lebron" has won one championship, Cleveland. Lebron, is no doubt a top 10 player. His buddying up hurt his legacy, as it should. I don't put him ahead of Jordan, Wilt, Russell for sure. Then there's the Magic, Bird, Kobe debate. None of those players quit in their teammates also, which Lebron did numerous times in the playoffs.

Not mentioning MJ didn't also have a top 5 player (at the time) on his side in Scottie Pippen is a bit curious.

But yeah I don't really disagree with you on that. Hard to compare the generations, and Lebron def plays in a much much much softer league than MJ or Wilt or Larry did.

No Pippen was not top 5

And its not like Lebron hasn't played with stars. There really is no question about Jordan's GOAT status.

Okay maybe not top 5, but according to an NBA article he's 7th.

Anyways, I do think MJ is the GOAT, that's not what I'm questioning here. I just think it's a good debate to have and I think Lebron is a generational talent who could probably hold his own one on one vs MJ. I think it's closer than people think it is.

Jordan grew with Pippen, he didn't leave to join a team with him. Lebron left to buddy up two guaranteed hall of famers, and a star at the time, Bosh. Then he cried to get Love traded to him at Cleaveland, but that's the one I give him credit for. Bubble doesn't, and shouldn't count.

He's an all-time great, no doubt, but he's not close to being the greatest of all time.

Pippen, at one point, was top five. Best all around player for years, but was definitely overshadowed by Jordan. The year Jordan left Pippen was best player in the league. They should have won the title that year also. f*** bitch ass Hugh Hollins and Hubert Davis.

On episode 9 now. I remember watching that Pacers/Bulls series live. Reggie fouled the s*** out of MJ to get that fade away 3 game winner lol. Reggie Miller was one of my favorite players growing up. Since I was white and not 6 foot I mirrored my shooting game growing up after Reggie. I would spend hours in our driveway mirroring his shots I saw in game and highlights lol. Wish I could get my kids into playing basketball but they lean playing baseball.

I'm still pissed that Travis Best got called for a "block" when Jordan blew by him without ever actually having any contact made late in Game 7. (It's been some time but I'm pretty sure I have those details right, though the Pacers-colored glasses might have filtered out actual contact if it happened). Funny thing was I moved to Indianapolis before my sophomore year of high school but didn't like the Pacers then, it was only a little later when they got rid of Person and got Detlef Schrempf that I became a fan. Reggie was fun to watch. Not a GOAT, but damned if he didn't get just about everything he could out of his talent, and f*** those Detriot [sic] fans for throwing that beer at that moron Artest for taking away what could well have been his title.

Yep if that fight didn’t happy Reggie probably would got his ring.

Opinion: Kyrie Irving’s self-pitying refusal to get vaccinated is pathetic and dangerous

A performative iconoclast, Irving posted an I’m-the-victim justification on Instagram Live. “It’s bigger than the game,” he said. “I came into the season thinking I was just going to be able to play ball. . . . Why are you putting it on me?”
Cue the violins.

I don’t respect his “choice” at all. As for why we’re “putting it on” him, we are battling together to defeat a highly infectious virus that has killed more than 720,000 Americans. We have a trio of safe and effective vaccines that slow the spread of the virus and confer miraculous protection against serious illness and death. Irving’s choice threatens not just his own health but also, should he be infected, that of his fellow players, his coaches and trainers, the referees who call the games, and the fans who come to see the Nets play.

Irving clearly understands the privileges that come with his stardom, including the ability to get millions of people to listen to whatever he has to say. A few years ago, he drew worldwide attention by claiming, with a straight face, that he believed the world is flat. “I do research on both sides,” he said in 2017. “I’m not against anyone that thinks the Earth is round. I’m not against anyone that thinks it’s flat. I just love hearing the debate.”

He later apologized. “At the time, I was, like, huge into conspiracies,” he said. “And everybody’s been there.”
That’s precisely the problem. Far too many Americans are “huge into conspiracies,” and it is deeply irresponsible for famous athletes to encourage them to go down the anti-vaccine rabbit hole.
