How often were you guys human?

I played the entire game as human, although I was only really invaded in three places: the depths, anor londo, and a few times in the dukes archives. I was lucky to not have overpowered invaders for the most part, minus one or two that had Pursuers in anor.

Co-op vs invades can be really intense and almost works as a balancing mechanic. 2 or 3 underpowered friends vs a single overpowered invader leads to some interesting battles.

DS2 is day one for me on PC, however, I must admit that Deep Down looks better. I'm hoping that they spice up the graphics more for DS2 on PC.

Guys I still can't get over the announcement invasions can happen any moment. I probably was hollow 95% of the time in Dark Souls. I did go human during parts of the game to fight certain enemies in order to get gear but not that often.

How often were you guys human?

I tend to play this game like how other games are set up. I tend to either want to play only PVE or only PVP. Meaning i am in hollow form (usually hollow) or offline when i want to play the story most the time. Now and then i'll do a mix of both. I actually prefer to help others most, whether that is in PVP sessions or just people having trouble with bosses or whatever.

So we can expect lag stabs to be a thing of the past, yes? I really hated that.

Godsmack would be a good source on this since i have read a few times he plays/played PVP quite a bit on Demon's Souls. I would be interested in his thoughts on this question.

I have Demon's Souls but I rarely get invaded.

Well, there are very few people playing Demon's Souls these days, but it's actually still possible to do co-op. I had an easier time getting summoned than I did invading someone or getting invaded myself. Incidentally, the lack of players makes it easier to co-op with someone you know.

As for lag stabs, in Demon's Souls they were less so. Still there a little bit, but not to the extent they were in Dark Souls. The biggest issue in pvp in Demon's Souls was phantom damage where you take damage even though you seem to be out of range. Of course, that's no where near as devastating as a backstab from 20 feet away.

I wouldn't mind getting invaded if all things were fair. I mean, is it really fun to get invaded by someone using high end gear he got from end-game areas when you're still at Undead Burg or something? And they always put in some kind of annoying items that are there for the sole purpose of griefing like dung pies, scraping spear, plague daggers, etc. You know, things that are there just to make you waste items.

It would have been awesome if DS2 was using the graphics engine of Deep Down. I'm not sure why they wanted to go this gen instead of next gen. Sure, they could have more sales, but I'm sure people would still buy the game on next gen consoles when they inevitably move on from this gen.

I'm interested in seeing how the game turns out. I hope they have learned their lessons on balancing issues. I hope the PC version does not use Games for Windows Live. I had a lot of trouble with that, and it ruined multiplayer.

@Godsmack they said they didn't know about the next gens and when they did it was too late. I hope Dark Souls 2 gets big so it can have at least a spiritual successor, as long as Miyazaki is having some involvement of course, lol.

Here's how you beat invaders. Go sit at your bonfire and watch the flame. Once the flame dies, you know someone is going to spawn in your world soon. So then run to that spawn point and kill them as they apparate. That's been my key strategy for like forever. Troll the troll as I say. Invaders stand no chance against me.

I tried some more co-op in Demon's Souls today.

Had some good sessions. Wait time was bearable in most places. Sometimes I had to wait a bit longer than I wanted. It's good to have a laptop or something while you wait...

I had a good run in 2-2. We explored most of the level, got a lot of items, I helped fend off 2 invaders, and we beat the boss. Quite a bit of work for anyone familiar with 2-2.

I am hoping for Sony to publish Demons Souls 2...

Same here. I like Dark Souls world and story but Demon's Souls had me love at first play. Dark Souls is Lord of The Rings world and Demon's Souls is Game of Thrones.

I have read rumors that Hidetaka Miyazaki (the guy behind DS and DkS) is working on Demon's Souls 2 but i think its wishful thinking. He does have a secret project in the works and hasn't stated if its a new IP or an existing IP is why i think DS fans are hopeful. My feeling is if you hear what game he is working on, and its not Demon's Souls 2, then the game probably just won't be made anytime remotely soon if ever.

Link? I've read he's making a game where the setting is "warmer" or something. Doesn't sound Demons-esque to me.

The rumor was most often brought up when that Swedish site posted Demon's Souls 2 on their site if you want to search for it.

As for his warmer comment, he said this:
Despite his feelings for the Souls series, Miyazaki admits, "Sometimes I'd like to work on a warmer game - not necessarily casual, but warmer in terms of the atmosphere and the environment." Given how pervasively gloomy the series is, we can understand how being mired in it every day might be draining. Furthermore, while Miyazaki is "sad about not being involved" with Dark Souls 2, he says, "Maybe this is the time to have new inspiration, so I'm fine about that."

While i again don't think he is working on DS2, his warmer comment doesn't necessarily mean he is working on a warmer game either right now. We don't know what he is working on.

My bad, kinda skimmed through the comments, heh.

Whatever he is working on, I'm sure it'll be great. Miyazaki has proven to be a great director.

You know what would be friggin' sweet? If the last boss is the Dark Lord from Dark Souls, provided that the ending would've been the dark one.

Well, I passed the 500 mark in number of sessions in Demon's Souls online. I've maintained a 78% S rating. Not bad I guess.

It's too bad I wasn't around when the game was just coming out. I feel like I missed out. I can't remember when I got Demon's Souls now, but it was quite a while after it came out.

I hope they go back to the Demon's Souls online system for Dark Souls 2.

OK, finally been playing Dark Souls. I'm in Undead Burg and learning the ropes. Any tips? I'm going for a Paladin build, but I know nothing of the weapons. I started as a cleric. I'm trying not to look online, but I hate to dump points in an attribute that I don't need.

It was difficult to get started (anxiety), but I'm really enjoying it.

I would stick around Undead Burg for a little while and level. The skeletons are easy and predictable once you know their patterns. Stick around the bonfire and make trips in either direction before returning to save and heal.

What weaponry setup are you running?

If you really want to make a solid paladin, restart as a knight because their armor and weapons are perfect for a new player to get the hang of the games mechanics. Starting as a cleric with that clumsy mace is annoying.

As far as stats go, here is my advice.

First off, if you are new to the game, don't obsess over making the perfect character. Just enjoy the game. You can make competitive pvp builds later.

Here are the stats suggestions:

vitality- always useful up to 40 or so
endurance- always useful up to 40 or so
strength and dexterity- unless you are going for a strength or dex build, then only up these as you need them to meet weapon requirements (and don't try to equip everything under the sun!)
intelligence- only if you want to cast mage spells (not pyro)
attunement- useful for all casting builds, try to plan ahead a bit to see if you really need it
faith- obvious need if you are a cleric/faith build, good for divine weapon scaling and miracles
resistance- raise this only if you like boy bands and dumping gasoline into creeks

As far as weapons go, pick whatever you like the most. If you like the moveset, and you are good with it, then use it. You will find more weapons as you go anyway.

I will also say that for a faith build, not all talismans are created equal.

Grimmy, you shouldn't waste points with Vitality (Until endgame). Get your base stats up to equip the weapons you desire and augment them all as faith weapons (Holy, Occult, and create a Lightning weapon). Max your faith at 50 and your Endurance at 40 and then distribute the rest of the points however you wish. Vitality should be the last thing you boost because you want to learn how to dodge and block rather than blocking with your face.

It will make you a better player if you get used to playing with less.

Do you have a concept in your head about the kind of weapons you would like to employ? Fast, powerful, mixture of both? The Claymore is a great weapon but it is difficult to get if you don't know how to slay the Dragon above the bridge. I prefer faster weapons even on heavier classes. My Paladin uses a Broad sword (excellent stamina depletion to your enemies when two-handed) a Claymore and a Gargoyle Halbred. The Halbred you should get easily from the first boss in the game (Twin Gargoyles) because From Software made the drop rates more common.

Also if you planned on trying to heal people, those spells are not acquirable until you are deeper into the game. For the most part your faith abilities will be passive in your adventures. Maybe a little heal here and there and force to knock opponents away.

You can do so much with everything!

I made a Valkyrie and a Guardian (the paladin I described to you). The Guardian uses Force, Traveling Walk of Peace, Wrath of Gods and the magic reflection spell (cant remember its name at this time). My Valkyrie is a team healer (in the princess covenant) and she uses a dark sword, partizan, and the moonlight bow. Sometimes I make use of her pike (the sprinting attack is good to go through shields.. really bad if you miss hahaha).

Then there are magical hybrids. I have a glass cannon using a moonlight sword and tanking sorcerer with a claymore and dual wields broad swords (this class has had great success for me in pvp actually) with soul spears.

You can have a ton of options in this title and as you smash your face through it, the play style that works for you will evolve naturally. You could want this Paladin and switch to something else half way through (too bad we can't dump points and they're a permanent investment). That would be great to level down to save re-rolling toons.

My favorite character is my Dark Belmont who uses Katanas, Rapier, Whips, and a Composite bow (Bows in PVP are under used). You can be in striking range of an opponent and the stun from the shot should give you enough time to evade and reset unless your opponent has a lot of poise. Then you bring out the shotel and go through that shield.

*starting to miss the lag stab*

I don't plan to PVP. I just want to play the game. I did manage to get Astoria's Sword. It's just overwhelming how people had to figure out all this when the game released. I have no idea where weapons and armor reside. I sort of want to just find them on my own, otherwise, I'll keep referring online for hints and stuff. I have to battle the guy down the sprial staircase in Undead Burg or the Demon.

I think I'm level 10 now. How long should I be grinding before moving on to new areas? I was enjoying Undead Burg until I encountered the dude in the staircase. :)

Oh ho ho ho, what was your starting gift? Did you get the master key? The guy in the staircase is havel, you can't beat him yet.. well you could but it would take a very very long time and if he hit you once it would be game over. You should move on to the next area, fight the demon (looks like a minotaur don't he? haha) and move on past that point. If you have the master key you can open the door behind havel and skip to the next area (rather dangerous, but fun for exploring).

If not, defeat the Demon and move on to the next stage of your adventure. Also with this game, levels are not important. They increase your power yes, but the equipment you carry around is going to be doing all your damage and protection primarily. You want to get to a blacksmith to upgrade your weapons and armor. A strong shield can absorb most hits and then you dodge the rest.

Also, tip.. if you want one for the Demon in the burg.

use firebombs from the merchant in the burg to burn him from the keep wall

Also if you have any shards, there is a blacksmith below the firelink shrine (the primary one on where you start after the crow brings you from the Asylum)

I thought that was Havel. Ok, I'll leave him be. I do have the master key. I'll give the demon a go a few more times. After you die, you get lazy and try to run pass all the skeletons and then you die again. :)

Are there plenty of shards to level a few items?

There are a few shards on the ground here or there, but for the most part you'll need to buy them or farm them. The upgrade system in this game can get quite complex with different types of shards, chunks, and slabs. Add to that some embers as well. It would almost be worth looking on the wiki just to see how it works. Of course, feel free to ask here, and I'll try to explain it as well when I get a free moment.
