As much as Microsoft loves subscriptions and licensing, you'd think they'd be selling licenses for ForzaTech, Creation Engine and id Tech to other studios. That would be what I'd do. But maybe its cheaper to use Unreal instead of maintaining and updating your own engine. I think the industry is diminished by the loss of custom engines and the people who know how to make the most out of it. Unreal is NOT the answer to everything.
To an extent yes, but even when they’ve licensed unreal they’ve added so much new tech, of their own making, that they’ve even shared their tech with Epic to include in future updates. I’m sure they don’t share everything, but at least some stuff that are improvements…. So either way, whatever engine they use they invest in it.

Forza tech looks promising with fable, so maybe other devs may find interest in it. Sad that turn 10 isn’t working on anything of their own, yet, but they were a balance of give and take between them and playground, heck even Rare helped them out with tech they created for unreal that works in Forza Tech.

Unreal may have the advantage tho, with many of its devs working at the coalition and I think it was last year they formed an entirely new support studio just to work with unreal and aid other devs. Which baffles the mind as to why they’d let go of ninja theory, they worked magic with it and the additional tech they had at their studio had them in the green even if they only produced one game with a late release, they were bringing in money with other studios outside of Xbox use their toys.

Yep, as UE takes over, more and more games feel "same-y". An ID software game feels different, as does say a Destiny. That's obviously not to say that you can't make great UE games, but FPS games all start feeling the same after awhile.

Don't like it one bit. MS swings in extremes. Phil gave studios little to no oversight and a ton of resources to make whatever and when that failed, Asha goes the other direction with what seems like narrow focus only on core projects with massive oversight and little to no room for deviation. Both seem ill advised ways to run a gaming business.

Mind you, Xbox isn't done with the layoffs. More still to come throughout the year.

I'll say this. I've been playing videogames for a long time. This generation feels like the most consequential generation in modern times. Between all the stuff happening with Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and other publishers, unprecedented hardware price increases during a generation, software increases, generation long (7+years) development cycles, unheard of studio closures and layoffs and general consumer unhappiness, this generation is going to have lasting effects on consumers, developers and publishers for a long time. I'd go so far to say this might be a turning point for the entire medium. I'm just not sure what will come next.

Same! That’s why I say boycotting PS6 is like the easiest thing ever. I have no interest in what the next generation is gonna bring

Covid and the series s have done this industry dirty, forcing them to do things they don’t want to do or overcompensate and regretting it

Honestly the whole tech industry is due for a crash. Gaming is just a subset of the larger problem going on right now. I talk to people in IT and the job market is awful right now. It is like there's a massive recession, but limited to tech right now. Thye blame AI taking jobs, but AI is not taking tech jobs, everyone over-expanded in 2020 and now it is falling.
