I downloaded Halo 3 this weekend (the free games with gold promo) and played it all weekend long, wow is it a refresher.

Few things I noticed right off the bat:

1. Game feels so slow in comparison to Reach and H4, with no sprint, it feels slow, but after a while you get used to it once again
2. Shooting isn't hit scan like Reach and H4, so lag and whoever is hosting the game plays a much larger role in your shots connecting
3. Maps are 10x better than Reach and H4, probably due to the game not having the armor abilities
4. You can tell Call of Duty has had a huge effect on the Halo franchise moving past Halo 3. It started with the bubble shield, power drainer, and re-generation green thingy, and it just expanded more in Reach and Halo 4.

I think Halo 3, despite my extreme hatred for the game in the past, is a huge refresher because the last Halo game that still has core Halo gameplay, fighting for powerups and power weapons.

I hope Halo 5 or whatever it'll be called will go back to this. Maybe if there's a spike in Halo 3 population it will give 343 some insight.

Am I the only one that loved Halo 4? The campaign was pretty damn cool in my opinion. The sound effects were also top notch. Gameplay was just something different to the formula (which I recall everybody always saying that Halo needs change) and it wasn't that bad. I think they should've done a better job with multiplayer. It started out with a lot of issue, like not having enough playlists and only having a few at a time, file share, among other things. The menu was also a little confusing. Aside that the multiplayer was fun for me, that is until everybody got ahead of the curve and used DMR's and Boltguns all over the joint.

I had no issues with Halo 4 I was just happy that 343 didn't majorly Fu** things up!

That being said I have really high expectations of Halo next gen, I want noticeably better graphics and a fresh feeling to the game, I think it's long over due.

I loved every minute of the Halo 4 campaign. Loved that it expanded Halo's world so much more than all the others combined. And we finally have a real villain in the Didact. Other games didn't felt like they had villains. Guilty Spark, Truth, Gravemind didn't do it for me. Hopefully the Didact is not dead and comes back, I'm sure he will. Also bring back the Arbiter, we all miss him.

I wouldn't be surprised if Halo 5 has aiming down the sights and they ditch the traditional cross-hair aiming...

I never understood why the cross hairs stayed on the screen in the first place. The only reason they shoulve been there was if you were using the weapon. As soon as you released the trigger, the cross hairs shouldve disappeared. Thats just my opinion though...

MasterC's AR HuD in his helmet.

Halo 4 campaign was Awesome but the multiplayer is a mixed bag for me. Hopefully Halo 5 @60fps and a smoother online experience will turn things around as far as I'm concerned.

I am hoping Halo 5 multiplayer has all the conventional modes but I want to see and MMO type game where there are drop ships for vehicles and troops and servers that support at least 64 players.

I really liked Halo 4 campaign and Soartan Ops was fun too, just a bit redundant. MP was alright, liked it better than Reach, although there seemed to be more noticeable network problem in H4 MP.

I'm really excited to see what Halo 5 brings to the table. 343 seems to have things all planned out. Still need to play the fourth though. Kind of want it to be the last 360 game I play for a while.

I am a huge Halo fan. If they do this, I am done with Halo.

It's inevitable. Look at the FPS genre right now, how many games are still using traditional FPS aiming?

Of the last two to three years of FPS, the only games using traditional aiming were Halo. Thank God for Counter-strike and Quake ;)

Halo 4 was great. Halo 4 Mp on shatter was brutal. Leggy as f$&@.

They are doing their best to keep the core Halo gameplay, they saw that sprinting and power slots worked for a good number of people in Reach so they added that. The closest things they have to aiming down sights are the scoped weapons and that's been since the first game. They are aware of the changes in Halo 4 were received and should be handling it accordingly. I expect that they won't do any huge changes. Maybe now they can have a better MP, and even a Classic playlist.

I can't even remember if I like the halo 3 mp, I'll hav to check it out this week. Never been a big halo guy but I always play the mp for a bit

The issue is that the general community of Halo has moved on. Those that are staying are going to be used to the armor abilities and custom loadouts, so if they remove those (I highly doubt they would), it would shock people and be seen as going backwards.

It's no different than COD, it's always going to have perks, kill streaks, and other garbage they've added, the COD community has become brainwashed to it and anything that remotely resembles COD2 or COD1, will be shunned, sadly.

I don't mind the armor abilities and custom loadouts, but for gosh sakes, what's with ordinance drops? What in the hell was wrong with throwing a camo and overshield on the map, and some power weapons to control? That's what made Halo stand out from every other shooter, it was a one of a kind. Now it's becoming a COD clone.

Halo 3 was the flagship game for the 360 at the time. Glad you were able to go back and enjoy such a great game.

I really hope Halo goes open world for at least for some of the campaign. Also I love Halo 4 was watching my son play it the other day and if didn't know better I'd say it was running on a next gen console. I really hope 343 throws in a lot of "new" stuff in there not the same old same old save for the multiplayer just to shut up the Halo community.

@Zubalon

I don't know about open world, in what sense do you mean? If you mean "wider/bigger" levels, say for more than one approach to encounters, then I'm all for it. Open world i.e. GTA then I'd have to say no.

Just like BF, a 60 fps Halo will be a big deal for me. I can't get into playing current gen Halo at 30 fps and blur.

CoD, BF and Halo all at 60 fps will be great!

Don't know if you've noticed, but most FPS are looking out to be COD clones.

I get what you're saying, but I was impressed with their work and for a studios first game from scratch, they did an amazing job with Halo 4 and they're just getting started. I give them the benefit of the doubt.

I think an open world Halo would make sense if they did it a la Metroid Prime.

Never played any of the Prime games, how are they setup?

Like Metroid sort of? First you start with a few basic areas where you learn to get around puzzles and enemies, and at some point you fight the boss. As soon as you beat the boss you get a power up or a special item that gives you the ability to traverse areas. An example is in Metroid Prime 2 where you get the dark suit and you're able to pass through the dark areas easier. It's like this repeatedly except the gameplay evolves with every boss and area, and at some point you can travel anywhere.
