Fire away....what’s best, what do you recommend. Good, bad, drop all your hot, steamy info here.

I've got a Denon AVR-S710W. Its an older receiver but it has everything I need. Handles 4K video, HDR 10 and all HD audio formats including Dolby atmos.

I recommend Pioneer,Denon|Marantz and Sony.
My personal fav being Pioneer especially the Elite series.

Currently own a Elite SC x701 which has 4K/60/HDR/Dolby Vision Atmos and DTS X.

Don't wanna spend Elite money? I recommened the Pioneer VSX-1131 which does everything above at a much lower price.

So will these last for awhile or is any new tech coming that will require an upgrade...?

Yes they cover the bases.
Only future tech(that might be up-gradable via future fw update) is HDMI 2.1 but its advantages ie 4K/120 hz isn't likely to be in any tech but maybe a 1180 ti.

Waiting for HDMI 2.1 is silly IMO.

What’re the major differences between those 3?

And how much media actually uses 9.2..?

Wattage and the Elite is a class D3 AVR.
Atmos and DTS X use many channels.

My fav is the Elite but you can't go wrong with any of the 3 in sound or features.

I’m probably not updgrading for a year or so. Obvoiusly these will be cheaper by then, so should I just keep an eye on these? Obviously there will be newer ones by then, but these should be plenty, right?

They will be good still and maybe cheaper by then.

Newer models might have HDMI 2.1 (so might the models i posted via fw update)which isn't worth waiting for imo and will be more expensive.

And what is the deal with HDMI 2.1?

When something has the power to run it.
1080 ti can't run modern games 4K 120 fps nor will next gen consoles.
Movies run @ 24hz.

I was thinking more for movies. I guess I mean will it become an industry standard at some point...? Or is this like a ‘super high end fringe’ type of thing?

Either way, when I finally build a new home theater in the next year or 2, I’ll be asking you the same questions 😎

Movies can do 4K 60hz right now but don't... they won't be doing 120hz either... but can you imagine? LOL
Now sports 4K/120/HDR would be AMAZING!

I coulda swore someone posted in a video, here on union, about the Xbox One X supporting it later... it’s supposed to support freesync at 120 hz
1440p/120hz the X supports now which is nice.
The HDMI 2.1 spec(which isn't available at this time true) will be used in many devices...
But software actually running at that spec is a different story.
X has no chance of running hq current games @4K/120hz. Some games on future PC's might and maybe a indie game or 2 on X2/PS5..

That's the receiver I have and it has been great for years. 0 issues. I also recommend Yamaha receivers as I had one before the Pioneer and that was great too before I sold it.

So you are doing passthrough for PS Pro and Xbox One X and retaining all the features including HDR and 4K?

Yes. Firmware update in the end of summer will allow Dolby vision but I don't have a TV that accepts that so its a moot point. HDR 10 and 4k full pass-through right now though.

Xbox X is getting Dolby Vision for its UHDBR player.

Have they announced that? so far all I've read was that Netflix was getting it but they hadn't mentioned it for UHD Blu ray or gaming yet.
