Bayonetta, Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance developer Platinum Games has announced that it's working on The Legend of Korra, a third-person combat game based on the Nickelodeon TV show of the same name. It'll be available as a digitally downloadable title on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and PC.

Activision will be on publishing duties for The Legend of Korra, which is set between the events of the show's second and third seasons. Korra writer Tim Hendrick is penning the story, in which you play as the eponymous heroine, using the Avatar's fire, earth, air and water elements in battle, against enemies that include Mecha Tanks, Chi Blockers and other Benders in the 3-on-3 Pro-Bending arena. Okay then.

The Legend of Korra will be coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and PC, with a separate 3DS title from another developer also in the works. IGN has the debut announcement trailer, which you can view below.

Hmmm... Given the target audience is Nickelodeon fans, I'm not sure if this will be a good buy. But this reminds me I still got to finish watching this cartoon. I only ever watched Season 1.

I know this is a show designed for kids but a lot of adults enjoy this series as well. Hope it's better than the Avatar Last Airbender game was though (loved that show as well). I actually know more adults who watch this than kids and I'm 50!

Season 2 god damn sucked. The start was ok and the two eps about the past avatar were god like the rest just sucked.

It’s no easy task to adapt the critically acclaimed animated series The Legend of Korra into a third-person action game. The beloved show fuses martial arts, varying philosophies and world cultures, and an exquisite story that follows in the footsteps of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

What better studio to take up the challenge than PlatinumGames (Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance)? The team has spent years meticulously crafting combat systems that marry style and substance into a visual maelstrom of fast, addictive action. And with Platinum’s knowledge of martial arts choreography, Korra couldn’t be in better hands. Revealed just yesterday, The Legend of Korra is coming to PS4 and PS3 this year. And we got to play it.

And what third-person, Platinum-developed action game would be complete without a few juicy RPG elements? Indeed, Korra can slowly level up each bending art to allow for more devastating abilities, from summoning whirlwinds to knocking boulders into the air. Special finishing techniques will also be purchasable from the in-game shop, which means gamers get a little loot spice for flavor.

Of course, Platinum has worked closely with the series creators in its effort for an authentic Avatar experience. One of the show’s lead writers helped script the story, and the actors behind Korra and the gang have returned to lend their voices to the characters. Platinum even went so far as to study martial arts reference material in order to best showcase the beauty and power behind bending.

Lastly, Platinum confirmed that a pro-bending mode has been fully recreated in The Legend of Korra, including the actual rules from the show. Take it as icing on the cake!

The Legend of Korra arrives on PS4 and PS3 this Fall, and will also feature a few surprises that “scream” PlatinumGames. Whatever that means, it’s probably amazing.

As Korra re-discovers her various bending skills, she'll find that she's stuck using more of the basic attacks with each element. But as you progress and level up, you'll upgrade your attacks and learn new combos. What makes the fighting top notch here is how seamlessly you can swap between your four powers as you're unleashing combos on enemies.

Water bending, for example, is good for long-range attacks -- either throwing out projectiles, or using a "water whip"-like move to reel enemies closer to you. On the other hand, air bending is best as an area-of-effect attack when dealing with a group of enemies surrounding you. Each bending style offers something unique, and it's best to mix up your attacks as much as possible. Oh, and you totally can summon an air ball and ride it around just like in the show.

Between your light and heavy attacks, you also have a special charge attack for more powerful bending moves, plus there's a dodge and counter move as well. Countering is especially encouraged, most of all when dealing with boss-type enemies. It's a similar counter system to that of Revegeance as well, where you have to learn the enemy patterns to best time the counter over being babied and getting some notification to time the counter correctly. Though, admittedly, the learning curve for timing is way smaller in The Legend of Korra.

And yes, you can go into the Avatar state. The specifics of what will allow you to summon your special ability haven't been quite nailed down yet, but ultimately the game will let you know when you can go full out, and at that point you'll be unleashing all your bending abilities at once for a duration of time.

Again, for an alpha, the combat system was pretty damn fluid. The camera was a little finicky during my hands-on time, but didn't ultimately hinder my session. I was impressed with how far along the game was already, and there's going to be loads of time for polish between now and the release date.

It's actually a pretty good show. Not sure what the game is like from that trailer, but I'm sure it will be decent.

Yeah. I never understand it. News about "The Legend of Korra will be coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and PC, with a separate 3DS title from another developer also in the works" always ends up being labeled as "Coming to Xbox One and Xbox 360."

When I post news from xbox sites like Totalxbox.com I do the same. They don't mention other consoles in the headline, despite the fact that it's coming to more platforms. All console specific sites do this. I also feel like this kind of news thread would be dead on arrival if I'd put it in the PC/multiplat section. The more popular threads there are of a different kind.
