Speaking of Twitter, since last night I've had an onslaught of likes for a reply tweet I made last year. Really odd. Not sure if someone with a lot of followers liked it so all the followers saw it as well, or if just bots. Went from under 20 likes when I got the first notification to 230 as of now lol.

I'm going to my cousins Thanksgiving dinner next weekend, inspired by his amerikan wife.
I've never been to this kind of celebration... what is expected by the guests? Do you drink alcohol? Praying to the Jesus before dinner expected? What kind of gift (if any) do I bring?
Please help me my forum friends.

People often say things they're thankful for before the meal starts. Religious types will say Grace or bless the meal.

Whether people drink much just depends on the crowd and what you feel like. A good red wine might be a good idea.

My family never brought gifts exactly, but just extra deserts. Find out if they prefer to have alcohol or serve coffee. If they're having coffee, bring cinnamon rolls; I think that would go well it.

Thank you, very appreciated.
I was thinking how I would tackle the grace thing, but just saying you're grateful is I great alternative.
They haven't said anything about the actual dinner, am I right in thinking the host couple have prepared for the dinner (buying the food etc)? We have some traditions here where everyone bring some food and then you eat from everyone's collected food. Again, they haven't said anything but I'm just a bit unsure if this holiday brings some unspoken rules I'm about to break lol

Family is of the religious sort, so I'll chime in. Usually the host will say a quick prayer. This normally includes thanking everyone for coming and thanking God for giving us the opportunity to have a gathering like this. Should last no more than a minute. If you aren't religious it's easy to bow your head and listen for a minute. If chosen to speak just say something similar to what I wrote up there. It'll flow easily enough.

And yeah a lot of people drink a lot on Thanksgiving. Being beer, wine, whatever floats your boat. Don't really recommend the liquor as it'll more than likely be a long day.

The food thing is spot on. Normally the host will make everything, so clear it with them if you want to make something and bring it over. Big Thanksgiving food is mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and the like. You should Google some standard recipes for Thanksgiving. I recommend bringing a pecan pie or something along those lines for dessert.

Have fun it's my favorite holiday! Love gathering with my family and eating a dumb amount of food.

Great stuff, it's getting clearer.
I'm thinking this might be a good future tradition with this party of the family. You amerikans do seem to have fun holidays, at least from what I've seen in movies and such.

The guys here said it best. You’ll enjoy it, one of my favorite times of the year.Always a good time getting family and friends together.

Don’t forget to thank the Indians that were kind enough to give the European settlers their land.

Hot Toddy season is officially here

This makes me think of something else Swede could bring to Thanksgiving.

I've never had it with raisins or almonds, but it can be a good hot drink. I had it a few times when I lived in the Upper Peninsula.

"Grandpa Lundquist’s Glogg Winter Beverage is the ideal gift for party hosts and friends. It is spiced with cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and citrus. Bring in the holiday spirit by enjoying a warm glass of Glogg garnished with raisins and almonds."

I usually bring a small animal to sacrifice when attending a Thanksgiving event.

Yes, Glögg is a huge Christmas tradition here, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I'm guessing it absolutely would work at Thanksgiving also, hoping for some snow which would go hand in hand with this.

Thread on Reddit today about the fact that if Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie then so should Lethal Weapon. Someone shared the fact that Die Hard is based off a book and now I'm shook.

Interesting, didn't know about the book.
I do know two things though;
Die Hard most definitely is a Christmas movie (both 1 and 2).
Lethal Weapon most definitely isn't.

I'm born before 1990, so I'm mostly right in my assessments in life.

IMO pickles are best had as spears on the side with any sandwich. Pickles are a natural 'Palette Cleanser' or a kind of flavor neutralizer. It over powers the after taste of anything else you've had recently and ideally means whatever you have next can taste as good as possible.

It's a similar principle to having crackers between tasting Wine and Cheese.

So, I think having it on a spicy sandwich just serves to obscure the flavor which is stupid.

I had a strong craving for pickles once, went to the store and just bought a jar and the girl at the cashier asked if it’s “for a party” I’m like “nah, just a craving” she then asked if I’m gonna eat them all and said “nope, my dog is gonna help me, she loves pickles too” she just laughed with a snort...so achievement unlocked :p

Not really a religious holiday, but if you are you can say grace, thank you and such before you eat.

I don’t expect anything from guest but if I go to one I bring homemade desserts, or drinks, no beer, I like hard drinks with flavor. But I will ask if they want me to cook something too.

No gifts, just go hungry and enjoy 😉

and if I remember right Die Hard is the 2nd film based on the books. The original film stared Frank Sinatra. He was set to star in the sequel book (what Die Hard is based on) as well but finally turned it down (his age) giving them the green light to move on with Die Hard without him.

I listen to a book vs movie podcast. It’s surprising how many movies are actually based on books that I didn’t even know about.

One big one was Forest Gump. The book is bat s*** crazy and I hope they make it a film some day lol. Imagine Forest as a tall huge guy that uses foul language the entire film, becomes a wrestler, joins the space program and on their launch to Mars he and a chimp crash land in the jungle then held captive by cannible’s for a couple years, and he and the chimp become blues musicians... that’s just a couple things from the book.

So... Thanksgiving dinner was a success. I brought a homemade potato gratin and a bottle of wine for the host.
About 20 people there, half of them randoes.
Went to bed at 4am after me and my three cousins had been in the open fire warmed wood tub since midnight.

I feel like jelly today.

Also, no grace to jesus, only gratefulness to everyone they're.
