Today,
Microsoft announced
Xbox Fitness for the
Xbox One. It's designed to be your ultimate in home personal trainer. Forget all of those DVDs and workout books you only tried for a few weeks.
Microsoft is looking to change the stigma that working out at home doesn't work and people fail miserably at being consistent.
With
Kinect finally being out of what I call the, "Beta stage," the advancement and maturity of the tech suits this type of application. With
Xbox Fitness and
Kinect working together, they're able to calculate your muscle usage, your heart rate and your energy expenditure. It's like what a heart rate monitor does but on steroids. The app corrects you and encourages you if you're using the wrong muscles or you're being lazy and aren't keeping up with the workout.
Microsoft spared no expense getting trainers people are familiar with. The trainer roster includes
Jillian Michaels (
Biggest Loser),
Tony Horton (
P90X),
Tracy Anderson (
Tracy Anderson Method),
Shaun T (
Insanity) and more. While the roster is impressive, it comes down to consistency. If you're not consistent you won't make progress.
Xbox Fitness has built in tools to keep you motivated. You have plateaus to reach. It knows your maxes and pushes you to eclipse them. While nothing beats having a great personal trainer working with you in person,
Microsoft seems to be onto something here with
Xbox Fitness to help gymphobics and people unable to find the time to make it to the gym and they're using
Kinect in a way the technology can be put on display. While I'm a gym rat, I'll be giving it a whirl when it drops to see just how well
Xbox Fitness transcends the gym/home bridge.
The application is free for
Xbox Live Gold Members through December
2014.
