UnionVGF Indie Game developers (or thinking about becoming one) corner

Yesterday I had a series of mistakes, not technical issues, just small mistakes in material, masking, asset transfers etc that took me like 2 hours to fix. I pushed on to make lost time, & only ended at 11 pm. I started at about 8:30 work my day job, end at 4 pm then continue my game project. Might you, I also work during lunch break.

Work up super tired and a little headache. Sometimes I need to tell myself to slow down. I told myself to work 5.5 days, end up working every day. Last week, I have 2 days off (one-day public holiday, another day is no pay leave due to reducing cost by the company), & I work full day as well. This week, I am off on Friday but I think I take a short break to freshen up.

get some good rest, maybe take a hike through the mountains?

I’m really tempted in going to Yosemite just because I’ve never been and the lack of the huge tourist turn out...

Looks great! I am maybe going hiking this weekend. I was doing this regularly with an organized international group for people living near Frankfurt, but the activities were cut short due to Corona. But things are getting better & the activities have restarted a while ago.

The Dining room is done. I am very happy with the result. I am loving UE 4.25.
It looks even better in motion. I am preparing for a video flythough to show case the ground level by end of the month.

Added subtle flickering lights to the candles. Both wall candles as well as lanterns. Took me a long time to finally resolved some technical light issue & there goes my Saturday.....Ended 9pm when done.

I am done with the ground level. also, I update the doors & light switch mechanics to work with the interactive wheels. Also, I added keys as inventory items, & allow locked doors to be unlocked with the right keys.

The concept for the basement. The stair is almost done (modeling, texturing). All I need is to piece them all together again in unreal. I wanted to do it yesterday but it was 10:30pm already & I decided to call it quit.

Completion of the Basement layout is the target for July. I am also longing to finish one of the final gameplay mechanics.

numLock opening via the correct number.

Stair area to the basement. Lights & some area need refinement, but I am pretty satisfied as it took me 2 evenings to get to here from nothing,

The heat control system did, & I run some light tuning. The basement is 90% done. Just need to add a shotgun rack & some additional polish & its the attic next!

Its off day so I spend my entire day, well working, on my game. specifically model & texturing the Winchester model 1897
The gunmetal took me a long time to texture. Hard to get it right, but I am pretty happy with the result, though it can be better, but gonna go to meet friends later so this is where I stopped.

sorry if this has been asked or if it’s out there, but, what is it you use to model and where do you make your textures in? Are you using any of Eric Matyas resources?

I used Maya LT for modeling. If you just getting started, I suggest Blender instead, it's free & I heard many good things about it. I would have used Blender too if I have not invested so much time & so much stuff done in Maya already.

As for texturing, I use Substance Painter for texturing (NOT to be confused with Substance Designer). I believe there is a trial version & There is a less expensive price for Indie & hobbyist. Just follow the Tutorials & you will get up and running pretty fast. If you have any questions, you can always ask me in this thread or pm.

Here is a short description for Substance painter. Its old but the points still stand,

Yes, I do use Eric Matyas music in my game.

Anyway, here is the list of tools I use currently

Maya LT for Modeling (Blender is a good & FREE alternative)

Affinity Photo for 2D work like textures sorting, combination, logo design etc ( I also used photoshop but will drop after license expelled due to cost)

Clip Studio Paint Pro for 2D artwork mainly (It produce better quality result than photoshop or Affinity paint for "D painting & linework)

Zbrush for sculpting (Didn't use as much these days though as I haven't done much sculpting work)

Audacity for sound/music editing (Its popular & free)

Davinci Resolve as video editor (Its free as well)

Unreal engine 4 (Its free for use, conditions apply)

New video of the basement. I notice the look speed is a little too high, but it can be adjusted in menu. I will use a lower sensitivity in the next video.

Star, this work is all you? Is anybody else helping you? I'm in awe of your work. I mean, look at that! It's amazing! With you and DLC making this thread, your guy's work is just awesome! Love it. Keep it up!

I work solo, though I do use assets(Free & paid) from the Epic marketplace for many of the 3d models & effects like water spill & steam fx.
