Unreal Engine 5 demo running on PS5

Surprising, that demo looked liked it had RT..? Also for 1440p and 30 FPS it still looked great.

Kind of shows that RT isn't really needed to make things look great, these devs will all need to get their engines modified to truly take advantage of what the consoles can do, at launch I'm sure a bunch of the 3rd party cross gen games will just try to brute force things into the games. I love how that person outlined "not a part of the PS5 Tech" and didn't go to the word demo, it's like they are trying to tell people it doesn't have hardware accelerated RT again lol.

I love tech demos, lol.

It's also not showing much in the way of foliage either. Dense, static rock as well. Still, this is the kind of thing that gets my imagination going, and the tech itself certainly looks incredible...

Yeah, sacrifice a few of those statues for some trees, enemies and weather effects :) I'm just glad we get to see something that gives people a little more hope of what Next gen can be (and maybe more) that kind of thing was lacking from the third party showing last week.

It's a tech demo. An impresssive tech demo. But this is not how you show off next gen.

It is when you are Epic and you are showing your new engine, this wasn't a Sony sponsored event, this was for Epic. They were using the PS5 to show a playable tech demo, it wasn't something canned where there was no interaction etc so it's more than you usually get with these things.

It had dynamic global illumination. I think alot of people think GI is a ray tracing thing, buut it isn't. GI has been around for decades.

Real time GI in video games hasn't been around for decades.

CRYENGINE was one of the first engines I know that had real time GI, SVOGI and it was very expensive computationally. Unreal Engine 3 had their kind of baked GI that was in Gears of War 3 called Light Mass (don't quote me on that) but that, again was not real time.

but that wasn't how it was meant.

I agree with you, it was good, no....it was a great showing of UE5. Some fantastic new big features mixed with oldr tech to create what seems to be a realistic representation of real world possibilties. I'm not knocking Epic at all.

I know. Which is why I never said real time GI.

The problem for me is that the difference between 1440p and 4K vs 30fps and 60fps isn't even close. As resolutions jump, I have a harder time even noticing (and good luck telling an upscaled 4K from true 4K).

It was meant as the debut of UE5 not the PS5, they simply ran the demo on PS5, everyone who talked to Geoff after it was from Epic there wasn't anyone from Sony there. I don't expect ever PS5 game to look like that, I'm sure we'll see a bunch of cross gen games that look just like the XSX games from last week but I do expect Sony 1st party to be somewhere close to this, that engine GG has is already doing an amazing job on the PS4, Horizon ZD looks amazing and no matter what anyone thinks of Kojima's latest brain fart Death Stranding as a game the graphics in that game are still some of the best this gen.

Had they chosen a different platform people would be talking about that one instead but they went with PS5, this was meant for GDC btw and was going to be playable there but the event was cancelled so they saved it for this. It does seem like they are really hyping up the SSD speed so that may be a part of why they went with Sony or they could have some kind of business arrangement although marketing rights to an engine seems a bit unrealistic. I believe most of MS's first party studios use UE4 while only Sony Bend and one of their much smaller studios use it, the rest of Sony's first part devs have their own in house engines so it is a curious choice to go with PS5 to show off their new baby.

I wasn't talking about that. I was talking about the comment that prompted my comment. It wasn't meant the way you're talking about.

Oh ok my apologies, I just don't see the comment you were responding to.

When I saw the character in this demo it made me think of Kameo for some reason, I really wish MS would do a sequel or re-imagining of Kameo. Make her look kind of like this character but keep the wings and the ability to fly as well as transform into other creatures. That game looked amazing on the 360 for it's time, a lush green much larger world like that would be mind blowing with this level of fidelity.

This is a revolution in asset delivery pipelines. Finally, SSDs can do more than decrease loading screens and PC boot times. This new generation of consoles is going to more interesting than I thought.

The next gen is here....

I cant bruh....I cant with this right now.

I gizz a fuk about 60 or 30fps unless its shooters and racers. And even that's debatable. I'll take 30fps all gen long as long as my games look like the crazy s*** we're seeing here.

I think my biggest hesitation, is file size. If these assets are brought in at film quality and no compression, what are the sizes of these games? PS5 is 825 GB. So that's like, 2 games now?

I don't think they should be console players, we haven't had 60fps as a standard framerate on consoles since the OOOOLLLDD days lol. I'm sure racing, fighting, sports and most MP shooters will still go for 60 like they do now but these big AAA blockbuster games that want to show off visually will probably still opt for 30fps. This is the thing, when people think next gen they always think visuals first, showing them almost current gen looking games running at 60fps isn't going to excite people, showing them something that looks like this will.

Also this was a playable tech demo, they didn't have a team sitting there working on it for years like a developer would so I'm guessing devs could tinker around with it, focus on some things more than others, sacrifice a little of the visual "wow" factor and still improve performance if they wanted to. Looking back at the UE4 demos for PS4, Sony's first party studios all surpassed the quality of those graphics fairly quickly, so I'm guessing they'll be able to do the same with this in time.

This does get me excited to see what Guerrilla's next game is going to look like, Killzone Shadow Fall for all of the knocks on it as a game still stands out visually today and Horizon only upped the wow factor.
Well, I Know Gears 5 was 60fps on one X and looked better than Gears 4 at half the framerate. They are getting better at it.

I couldn't give to s***s if its upscale or native if it looks the same. It's the clarity and IQ I care about. Certainly for me 1440p is noticable inferior to 4k on my 65 in screen. 4k looks faboo.

Framerate importance depends on the game.

The only games that I play that I think need to be 60fps are fighting games, everything else just dial up the eye candy and give me 30fps, I don't care about native resolution either, there are awesome reconstruction techniques out there that look 99% as good as the real thing, you practically need a microscope to tell the difference.

I went back recently and looked at the unreal engine videos released at the start of last gen and definitely agree that games did live up to and in the end surpass those tech demos. Bodes well for this generation.

Yeah I remember when the first ‘tech’ demo came out for the OG gears of war and nearly everyone was saying it was prerendered and it won’t look like that. Then it came out and blew everyone away with its visuals.
UE is amazing. I use it in my workflow, alongside after effects and blender and this is very exciting for what the future will bring.

They would bbe compressed. File sizes will be smaller in general next gen.

able to convert scan 3D data to be use without much extra effect is game changing. More ow than all the visual fx.

it’s a big S Time saver for studio that can do colored 3D Scanning. Easily a 80—90% time saving plus greatly improve realism and quality. as a analogy, it like time spend taking a picture vs recreate an image base on the picture via painting.
