Unreal Engine 5 demo running on PS5

I just don't get why, it's an engine and it'll work on XSX, PC and pretty much every current platform as well just not all at the same level. The PS5 will be able to handle certain things better, the XSX will handle certain things better, some PC's will handle certain things better and current consoles and moderately powered PC's without a cutting edge SSD will all have to be scaled down considerably.
I just thought that post was funny

I think a lot has to do with the narrative on ERA and GAF that the Xbox couldn’t run this demo because of the way the interview went. Not to mention places like IGN writing articles with the headline “PS5 SSD Is 'Far Ahead' of High-End PCs, Epic Games CEO Says”.

It’s fair to say not a lot of people saw this as a multiplat engine or even believed the Xbox could run this demo. Come to find out it actually runs it the same way.

Nonsense. My 16 bit Megadrive will do it all best.

Alot is due to clickbait journalis.

Headlines these days are 70-80% clickbait or selling narrative to generate clicks. Heard a headline that claim Ps5 is faster.. if you do not know any better, you thought PS5 is more powerful, when it’s just the SSD that is faster.

but “PS5 SSD is faster“ doesn’t generate clicks, like “ PS5 is faster than XBoX Series X!”

i read a while ago I saw an interesting video by a physiologist why smart people believe or do dumb things, some even super obvious, even in your face.

basically people, smart or dumb, will try to use the least amount of brain power necessary to accomplish a task. When reading or hearing things, people tend to just believed things on face value, that they want to believe, choose to believe, & not bother to check. The opposite is also true, where people will reject, downplay or denial at face value, things that they don’t want to believe, or choose to believe.

I always hear people cried, “ (insert person name) think we are so dumb to believe what (he/her/ they) said? “

which I like to reply, “ No, they don’t think you are dumb, they think their target audiences are”.

So, you thinking Fortnite is great is just laziness. :tounge::tounge::grin:

Click bait is high again, remember when Edge magazine had a cover telling people the console choice was on their cover?

Sorry, I don’t think fortnite is just great. It is easily game of the generation.

Kobe Bryan famously said, “ people don’t hate good players, they hate great players” when asked why he was so hated.

This perfectly described Messi, Ronaldo and Fortnite. it’s popular to hate what the successful.

Yes, Fortnite definitely is the Kobe of videogames.

It has happened before lol

So you are saying Epic COE is kissing Sony S to attract more people to get hype about PS5 & use their engine, or along these lines?

What's next you gonna tell me, Westling ain't real? I mean they are real right.

Would that also help with clipping? You know, where a hand goes through a rock, building, character, etc.
I'm pretty sure that would have to do with how tight they are running their collisions. You can do mesh based collision, but it's more expensive.

Epic CEO Says Sony’s PS5 SSD is ‘Best in Class’ and ‘Better Than High-End PCs,’ PC Will Need to Catch Up With PS5

"Sony’s storage system is absolutely world-class. Not only the best-in-class on console, but also the best on any platform, better than high-end PCs. This is going to enable the types of immersion we only could have dreamed of in the past. The world of loading screens is over. The days of pop-in and geometry popping up as your going through these game environments are ended. "

"We’ve been working super close with Sony(you don't say! OneBadMutha) for quite a long time on storage. The storage architecture on the PS5 is far ahead of anything you can buy on anything on PC for any amount of money right now. It’s going to help drive future PCs. [The PC market is] going to see this thing ship and say, ‘Oh wow, SSDs are going to need to catch up with this."
I'm pretty sure everyone and their dog accepted this, haven't they? It's kinda beyond arguing. It really is a step above everything else from what I can gather.

Considering it's running at 1440p 30fps with no AI onscreen, no raytracing, I'm not impressed at all. This looks like something X1X, maybe even ps4 pro could do at 900-1080p running bare bones like that. It's just when I look at games like Horizon ZD and i imagine it being customized in corridors vs a huge open world, I just don't see a massive difference at all. Does not look next gen to me without AI onscreen with actual gameplay calculations.
Nah man. Current gen can't do that lighting in real-time nor throw around that kind of geometry. HZD doesn't touch that from a rendering standpoint.

Closest thing to this I've seen this gen would be parts of uncharted 4 (the pirate town) and rise of the tomb raider (the first syria level) ... and still this is on a whole other level.
HZD is impressive for what it does but nothing in that game comes close to this demo, nothing.

Well I assume because PC hasn’t really focused on revolving their software around hardware SSDs like MS and Sony have for this upcoming generation.

I really think people are getting way too caught up in the look of the engine rather than the experience from the overall package. I mean, it looks nice, even though i am expecting much better benchmarks later in the console’s cycle, but the way it will sound and feel is what's going to be the more telling story. If it were back in the 90s, I could understand if this were the main focal point of an experience, but not now in this era.

I just think if Guerilla went in with a goal to deliver a similar corridor walking sim with no enemies, npcs etc with the idea to deliver good looking rocks, it would really shine. I understand HZD isn't there, but you give them a PS4 Pro without the base PS4 at 900p, without all the constraints and taxation that go into a game, they would really surprise everyone going for "pretty." I wouldn't be shocked if they tried to replicant that first scene one to one they got extremely close.

Since they only have to develop for Sony and fight have to worry about any other hardware, that's not an entirely fair comparison, but of course they'll get the best of what the console offers.

They might get close with baked lighting and copious normal maps, but that would not be real time lighting. They'd be faking pretty much everything, which is the point.

Yeah, and for me the real time GL just doesn't seem worth the cost. There's an obvious difference, but not really that big of a deal to me. I mean that PS5 demo basically forced the hardware to its knees. It's a 4k 60fps console and this was 1440p 30fps with no gameplay calculations.

I woouldn't be so sure that the dynamic GI is to blame. The texture/geometry work is insane, it has 24 8K textures for each those statues, plus a 16k shadow map for each light source.

You are also looking at it from a purely numbers point of view, 1440 this, 60 that. Tell me, have you played a native 4K game on console that comes close? Seriously doubtful. That insane texture /geometry renders yoour res issue moot. The sharpness and detail on display means even at native 4K the diffference would minimal, unoticable for most.

Yeah. We likely wont get that level in most games(if any). That's a tech demo were they throw impractical levels of fidelity just to show they can. I do wonder if they'll come up with a way to procedurally generate detail so you dont have assets that take up so much space.

Those assets will likely have to be downgraded simply because of storage. I bet it still looks effectively the same though.

Yeah.

Go and watch the part where they show the amount of triangles, it is totally overkill. The majority just look like noise.

Is space an issue? Textures are compressed and uncompressed on the fly, and on Xbox atleast, they seem to have made significant upgrades in that department. But yeah, they will likely be dowgraded either from 8K to lower or by amount used for any giving thing. Indies might get away with less downgrading.

I wasn't even talking about textures. Dense meshes like that are huge. Not to mention it's even more expensive to render that much data. That's one of the reasons it's so impressive, tbh. I honestly dont know how viable it would be to use such assets. I'd be interested to see just how big that demo is.

Aren't meshes compressed also? I was under the impression they were.

Def right about expensive to render. Hence why it is overkill. Just a tech demo doing what a tech demo does.

The issue of compression isn't just how fast you can uncompress, but what did you lose in the compression.

How compression works is grouping identifiable data together (less compression but no loss) or round similar data to the same value & group (like Jpeg) but you lose details.

I need to learn more about the voodoo compression they talked about before I comment more. But something gonna gives I bet. Question is what & if the tradeoff worth it, or noticeable.
