Steam

It would take quite a long time to get used to something so dramatically different.

I like all of the hate this thing is generating....lol Always happens before something is widely accepted and even praised as revolutionary.

Let's wait and see, shall we?

I see potential and precision.
Some info from people who have tested the controller.

The more I think about this controller the more I think that the track pad is not going to be accurate enough. I'm sure Valve has everything under control, but I guess we'll see.

Nice article. Developers describe the feedback a little more. Here are a few quotes from the Gamasutra article

"These are not like laptop trackpads," Tabar said. "Everyone is like, 'Oh we're replacing thumbsticks with trackpads, oh s***.' [laughs] But this is not at all like a laptop trackpad. It just feels good. It's a challenge to verbally describe it.

"When [your thumb] moves toward the outer zone of the trackpad, you can feel that. [The zones on the trackpad] are independent of each other," he added.

"It sounds like there's actually a mechanical device in there, which really makes it feel mechanical, but not in a clunky way," Remo said. "It just feels really high-tech and precise. … I can't stand trackpads on laptops, and this felt really good to me. There was almost no learning curve as far as accuracy goes."

"It feels like you're moving your thumbs over a rough surface, though it's all virtual," Lambe said. "From a tech standpoint, think about something that can click whenever you tell it to... Simple example: you move your finger 1 inch up, and it ticks 10 times...You flick it up, and it starts ticking, like you've spun a wheel."

I finally started The Last of Us a few days ago. As soon as I started trying to try and shoot guys, that lack of precision and clumsiness of analog sticks came back to haunt me. So frustrating. I've gotten so used to kb/m over the years and analog sticks just flat out blow to me now for shooters. I hope this controller can help alleviate some of that frustration with trying to pull off head shots. Can't wait to try it.

Tripwire: “SteamOS, Steam Machines, and Steam Controller will be the best thing to happen to PC gaming since digital distribution”

Valve delays Steam Machines launch until sometime in 2015

Valve's plans to push forward a new platform for PC gaming will have to wait a bit longer. The company has announced that its plans, and those of its OEM partners, to launch a number of Steam Machines using Valve's SteamOS has been delayed from a fall 2014 time frame until sometime in 2015.

In a post on the Steam Community forums, Valve indicated that the delay was due to the need to make improvements to its Steam Controller, which will be bundled with every Steam Machine. It added:
Obviously we're just as eager as you are to get a Steam Machine in your hands. But our number one priority is making sure that when you do, you'll be getting the best gaming experience possible. We hope you'll be patient with us while we get there.
Valve gave the first concrete details about their SteamOS and Steam Machine plans in September, along with the first design for the Steam Controller, with touchpads replacing the normal analog sticks and a touchscreen display in the middle. Later, Valve redesigned the Steam Controller that ditched the touchscreen. In January, the company announced 14 third party OEMs would launch Steam Machine PCs with SteamOS and Steam Controllers.

I have to wonder if this has more to do with launching at a lower price and less to do with controller improvements. Either way by the time they launch these they'll make these new-gen consoles look exactly like what they are.

Outdated.

Flamebait confirmed.

Lucky for consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One made just survive the Steambox launch.

I would buy this for PC exclusive games only. I would like to see what kind of support it will have though. Is SteamOS a linux OS?

It is Linux based yes. You can already get SteamOS and put it on a PC today I believe, plus Steams big picture mode is a console esque interface as well, VERY similar to Xbox Live on Xbox 360.

I like it. Telling it like it is is now considered flame-bait because it hurts the feelings of over-sensitive console fans.

You know exactly the kind of reaction that posts like that get.

Flamebait post is flamebait.

I actually cannot wait until SteamOS comes out, I am going to build a MiniITX system with it on it.

I hope Valve get on top of this. I was initially interested in their ideas but the pricing that's been announced so far is just ridiculous. Also, who exactly are they targeting? I got the impression from their initial press statements that this was attempt to take some of the console market, but now I'm not so sure.
