The Xbox One won't support vertical orientation, and could damage the console, according to Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox.

Panello revealed to GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk." He clarified that "it wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both".

The Xbox One isn't the only system to feature a slot loading drive; both the PlayStation 3--original and slim models--and PlayStation 4 have a similar design, and users are free to orient those consoles horizontally or vertically without risking damage to the console.

Panello stated that Microsoft discovered that "we found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally".

The Xbox One is scheduled for launch in North America, most European markets, Australia, and New Zealand on November 22 this year, with follow-up releases in Japan and the remaining European markets in 2014.

Would have mind flat anyways just to be safe. Never had my 360 vertical because of fear of someone knocking it over.

During the presentation, Xbox senior director of product management and planning Albert Panello received a question regarding the Xbox One's ability to support video feed from the PlayStation 4, which he did not respond to directly.

Later in the presentation, when Panello discussed the Xbox One's ability to snap applications to the side of the screen during gameplay, he said "any application can be snapped to a game…this could be the live TV feed, so if you wanted to be playing Ryse and Killzone at the same time, you could snap that."

Killzone is a first-person shooter series exclusive to Sony consoles. The newest entry to the series, Killzone: Shadow Fall, is an upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive title.

The confirmation from Microsoft that the Xbox One will not block the PlayStation 4's video signal comes shortly after Sony revealed that it will not prevent users from capturing video from the PlayStation 4's HDMI port.

Users will be able to access the PlayStation 4's video signal through the Xbox One dashboard.

that should mean you could play your Xbox 360 at the same time you play your Xbox one
you are suppose to be able to be logged into both the 360 and the one
at the same time with the same gamer tag

I'm loving that snap thing.

Also - only chumps go vertical.

Why should I place it vertical? All other equipement, sourround reciever, blueray player etc is placed horizontally also. Btw this has been known since the reveal of X1.

I had my 360 vertical because of space constraints. It's nice having the option.

I blows my mind that they will answer this question, but they still wont answer the game plus Netflix at same time question directly. Im thinking it is gonna be no at launch...

what makes you think it wont? It would be kinda odd that if it didnt. I mean, an app is an app right? I have only seen MS make the distinction between "apps" and "games". Games cant be snapped side by side, but an app/game can and an app/app can.

The answer was in the post you quoted, "he said "any application can be snapped to a game…this could be the live TV feed, so if you wanted to be playing Ryse and Killzone at the same time, you could snap that.""

that could be cool for graphic comparison shootouts...,

I guess that will be the new terminology for gaming?

"You could snap that".

Same as last gen "what is your gamertag"?

BS stat coming up with 80%. Also I don't see why it's not possible when the PS3 and PS4 can do it and they both have use slot loading. MS is probably being cautious of the whole thing.

vertical always freaked me out -- earthquakes (not really), errant cat tails, errant drunk arms... so many different ways for it to get knocked over

even if MS put a sticker on top of the Xbox saying to only use horizontal, someone will still try vertical and f*** the game disk.

luckily for everyone else, there sure to have a video cam handy to record the moment for youtube.

My HTCP, my Xbox 360 and my PS3 are all vertical in my home theater. I took out the shelves on one side of my TV stand.

Was hoping to fit the PS4 and XBO in that same spot, and move my PS3 to the bedroom but alas, I'll be somehow having to find room elslewhere for my XBO or re-ogranizing my HT.

Vertical works surprisingly well for space saving as you can choose how close things are to each other precisely, as opposed to using shelves, which take up their own space, and are locked into whatever option your furniture gives you.

I have never placed any of my consoles vertical. I even had my original Wii horizontal instead of vertical on the included stand. My Wii U is also horizontal.
