Any thoughts? I'm getting a new tv for gaming and these seem like the best options that are reasonably priced.

I'm in the same boat as you. But I'm leaning toward the Samsung. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on the UN55KS8000. Vizio has both sets of HDR ( HDR 10 and Dolby vision) available on their tvs but my receiver only accepts hdr 10. No glaring differences other than that IMO between the samsung 8 series and the vizio P series. Both are excellent sets.

I have a P Series and it is great, but beware that HDR gaming is currently not compatible with the Vizio P Series as of right now. Movies yes, gaming no. I've read that a software update is expected to correct this in the next couple of months.

I tried to enable HDR for Forza Horizon 3 and everything looked funky: washed out colors, varying brightness, etc. Apparently the Xbox One reads the TV as HDR compatible, but the TV has problems deciphering the signal.

UHD movies are great all around with HDR, so this is isolated to just gaming.

That's odd, theres a load of videos on youtube that suggest otherwise. I will take your word for it.

I think the issue is just recently coming to light, so you won't see much about it in any official capacity. There are a bunch of people stating the same issues I've had on GAF and Reddit message boards. How's that for reliable sources? GAF, Reddit and me.

I tried out a Samsung 7 series before I made this thread, and I just cannot have a 60hz tv. I've found that I absolutely hate judder. Upscaling is also important, which is a strong point for Samsung.

I'm leaning towards getting Samsung 8 series due to the peak brightness being so much higher as well. Still undecided though.

There's a part of me that really wants to test a Sony TV because I still absolutely love my 2009 Sony Bravia. It's been such a great TV.

Biggest difference between is Dolby vision is dynamic, always changes depending on the scene where HDR 10 is static . It's definitely noticeable when viewing content that supports both formats . The Xbox HDR patch for the vizio is in testing now and will be released soon. Also a guy named Matt the works for vizio who gives us all the details in the AVS forums also said they have reworked HDR for gaming and said there will be no Additional lag added with the new software patch . The final number comes out to 30ms with HDR for gaming for ports 1 through 4 . Port 5 does not support HDR and will deliver 17ms for gaming . Originally HDR enabled for ports 1 through 4 was over 50ms!

I was reading about the P series at Vizio.com. People actually post there, and there are Vizio representatives responding. I did read where the Vizio moderator did in fact say they will send an update to the TV's to address the problem. However, they said that it's just that the Xbox One S does the HDR a bit different than others, so it really stems from the Xbox and Microsoft. But the typical consumer doesn't know this, and will assume it is the TV, so they are taking proactive steps and changing their software accordingly to accommodate the Xbox.

Good info, thanks guys. Really glad to hear about the HDMI port updates.

Back in my day, they didn't release buggy TVs that needed to download patches. #OldPeopleProblems

They called them radios! And we all sat five inches away and the incessant sound of static gradually drove us all into a murderous raaaage!

And we liked it!!

I come from the days where you would have to cut the tv on and wait about 3 minutes for it to warm up before it would display a picture . Lol

That's one thing I like about my p series tv . If your playing a competitive first person shooter and want really quick response time you just hook up to port 5 that also supports 4K and get very low input lag and still displays a beautiful picture . I actually tried it out and was impressed how close it was to my gaming monitor . But for single player games using HDR at 30ms of input lag is great in my book . And the fact that it supports both HD formats makes it a win-win purchase and overall great value in my opinion . .

Exactly. I took a risk and bought the P series before the HDR10 update came out based mainly off of what I had read on the internet. I loved the price point, reported picture quality and the promise of both HDR formats.

My S won't run HDR? on my P series on HDMI 4 and when I try to put HDR input sampling on I am met with a black screen. 4k however works from the off.

I am confused.
Just to confirm, do you have the following:

- HDR software updated for HDR10 downloaded and installed (Firmware update for the TV)
- HDMI subsampling turned ON (use the tablet to make this change)

Also, is this for movies or games? As mentioned before for games it doesn't really work correctly. For movies it works great.

Pureshooter

What software am I looking for? Of the top of my head I am running 2.013 I could be wrong though.

Sub sampling is on and the screen goes black.

2.0.13.13 is what you need.

When you say "goes black", do you get a message saying there is no input, or is the TV still receiving a signal?

Pureshooter - I am running version 2.0.13.13, I've just got home from work and checked. The 4K signal is detected and the Xbox One S runs fine at 2160p. When I turn on HDMI sampling the screen goes from black to no signal. I am not running the Xbox One S through the HDMI cable that came with it; I am using the Xbox One HDMI. Could that be the problem?

That would suck if so because the TV is on the wall and I am not taking it off to replace a HDMI wire.

Edit: Is the difference of HDR really that big over having the game (Gears in this case) upscaled to 2160p? it looks fantastic.

also

HDMI sampling seem to work fine when I inserted a Ultra HD Blu-Ray tonight but as soon as I backed out in to the Xbox One S home page it went back to no signal.

Ended up going with the Samsung 8000 and the picture quality is insane. Loving it so far.

It is amazing what you can get for the money nowadays.

I don't think it is either. It's annoying the hell out of me and I have not managed to figure it out.
I'm 99 percent sure you have to use the cable that came with the S or the cable that came with the tv . I know for my setup, I have the same tv you do and the Xbox one S, it did not play nice with the original Xbox one cable

Just to confirm, do your settings match mine above? My Xbox One S is attached to HDMI 1, but as long as it isn't HDMI 5 I think you're fine. Maybe try to mimic my settings exactly to narrow down the issue?

Thanks pure, I will check on it tonight but those settings look identical to mine outside of I use Calibrated dark and Gama 2.4.

I can't imagine that would make a difference. Did you try different HDMI ports? When your screen goes black do you still have sound?
