Official Thread VR Headset

So my quest 2 died. I bought a quest pro just out of curiosity. Some quick thoughts after an hour of use:

Pros:
- Lenses are so much better. The 'sweet spot' is just everything now, as long as the headset is on correctly. No more god rays!

- Controllers. Super solid tracking no matter what you do. No more ring and it feels very solid. The controllers are chargeable.

- Related to lenses but also with a higher pixel density, very clear images now. Screen door is less noticeable than ever.

- Although a bit heavier than the quest, it feels more balanced because the battery is in the back.

- Charging dock is included. However, this leads me to cons...

Cons:
- Charging dock is finicky. Like, gotta move the headset and controllers around a lot until they are in the exact right spot. Kind of a pain.

- Price of course! Definitely not worth the price of admission but I knew that going in. Work Christmas bonuses aren't going to spend themselves!

- Included light blockers have a smell to them and aren't very stable. I just leave them off. Seeing everything outside the headset can be kind of a bummer depending what you're doing but not a big deal to me personally.

- Color pass through is cool, but the quality is just bad. It'll be cool when the camera quality gets there but for me it's too distracting with all the noise.

- The worst thing by far to me is the comfort. Takes a bit to get the right fit, but even once you do, your forehead will be red for a while. Especially bald guys people like me. Irritates the skin too. Just, a wtf decision to go with this design. And the strap is not replaceable. So you're stuck with it. The back has the battery which is nice for balance, but that makes it very bulky in the back too. So when leaning against something like a wall or bed frame, its very uncomfortable.

Notes: Haven't used the eye tracking or tried it with PCVR yet. Mostly just played quest games and media browsing. I understand this isn't a consumer headset but I wanted to try it after my quest died. Might return it and get the new HTC standalone a try. For me, I'll be doing PCVR mostly wirelessly with it and I miss the fully enclosed headset so I think this fits the bill until Quest 3 comes out later this year.

Still, if you haven't tried these kinds lenses before, you're in for a real treat when you upgrade to the next quest or HTC's new headset. The clarity on the picture is night and day.

Samsung teases new XR headset at Unpacked Event, and partnerships with Google & Qualcomm.

Later, they let's slip that there are further partnerships with Meta and Microsoft, for "services" on the device.

Oculus / Palmer Luckey got it right, from the beginning!

Quest 3 gets FULL BODY TRACKING in December, automatic resolution boost, as well as dedicated game enhancements to some current Quest 2 games.

What's amazing, is the potential ability to do forward locomotion from the waist, as opposed to from your head-pointed direction! This allows for much more natural movement in VR! Seriously, nobody is touching what Meta is doing in VR/MR, right now! And they are doing them both at $500.

I played some Halo MCC, Forza, and HiFi Rush on my Quest 3 today. It's kind of impressive, even if imperfect. I couldn't believe how good everything looked, but the lag was a bit too much for say, online team deathmatch. Forza played well. I was surprised how well HiFi Rush played, as a pseudo rhythm game. I love how you can select the screen size, and if you double tap the headset, you can just keep playing in passthrough MR.

I have a WiFi 6 router, but I'm wondering how good a WiFi 6E connection might be, since the Quest 3 is capable. Also, my internet speeds could be better, to begin with.

Between Asgard's Wrath II (free if your Quest 3 was bought & registered in 2023) and RE4R VR on PSVR2, not to mention AC: Nexus, there seems to be a AAA VR game revolution finally happening! It was just like Half-life: Alyx and a bunch of mini games (not that there's anything wrong with that) for YEARS, now!
