Panzer Dragoon gets a VR game

Depending on what year you were born in and what consoles you had growing up, this news might be the best you get all week. An official Panzer Dragoon VR game is in development.

Very little is known about the game, named Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record, right now. A short (and hastily translated) press release suggests that it will be comprised of levels from the original three games in the series: Panzer Dragoon, Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

The Panzer Dragoon games are a series of on-rails flight games in which you steer a mythical beast across the skies, shooting down enemies. It’s traditionally played in third-person, but this VR remake will feature first-person gameplay and a new control scheme using VR motion controllers. The first image of the game is below.

The original trilogy released across the late 90’s on the Sega Saturn. At E3 last year Nintendo announced full remakes of the first two games for the Switch. It’s not yet clear if this VR version will borrow from those remakes but it seems unlikely; they’re being developed by different studios. Voyage Record is being handled by Wildman Inc, though the game’s licensed officially by Sega itself.

And that’s about all we know for now. The game’s coming before the end of March 2021 but headsets haven’t been announced. Wildman says those details, including exactly which levels will be remade, will be revealed at a later date. For now, you can follow along with the game on an official Twitter account.

I have a VR Ready RoG ASUS Laptop. I'm thinking of finally getting a VR setup.

I'm interested in something portable that can move with the laptop. I'm leaning toward Oculus products because it looks like it could be easier to setup the motion sensor.

I hear some games like Arizona Sunshine look poor or have downgraded blurry textures but it sounds like the Link to a PC could deal with that.

As I work long shifts as a truck driver sitting all day, I think VR would be really nice to play when I come home and have entertainment while moving around. I think I'm going to order the Quest.

I wondered if anyone had preferences on setting up Audio? I guess it has built in audio or a jack for headphones? I hate earbuds, I'd rather use headphones.

FINALLY was able to order the Oculus Quest last night. They've been out since November, just selling through small batches every so often.

Too bad for VR that they went into holidays with a shortage, then got hit with the production halt in China. Anyway, they've been trickling into the Oculus store over the last week, and I am excited to finally get my Quest sometime in the next 10 days.

the built in speakers on the quest are surprisingly good, i hardly ever use headphones.
now the oculus link is out, i would highly recommend the quest, as well as loads of titles that the quest can run with freedom un-tethered, you also have the entired library of rift and steam titles etc (if your PC is beefy enough) but of course need to use the cable for this.

I order the Rift S and just in the time since then, everything has gone crazy and I've moved out of the house.

I'm in the truck and Rift S is still at home in the box.

I could try using the Rift in a limited way in the truck, but probably not worth it.

I didn't like the look of the Quest Headset; it looked uncomfortable and front heavy. I tend to favor the halo design of headsets I've tried.

I've had my Quest for 4 days and I love it! That said, I immediately strapped a spare phone backup battery that I had laying around to the back strap. This does 2 things: 1) it acts as a counterweight, and 2) keeps the internal battery charged all of the time. It's literally a win/win!

However, this leads to the obvious oversight in what I find as 1 of 2 oversights. Front heaviness, and too tiny of controllers for my hands. The battery and processor should have been clipped to the back and removable, imo. The only downside would be for resting your head during 3DoF applications. Beat Saber just makes these controllers feel so darn tiny, when you're used to the Move sticks. Same with Vader Immortal. Then again, they track SOOO much better in most cases. They are so much like mini-Xbox controllers that it's just uncanny!

All in all though, the Quest is a solid 4/5 stars for me, so far. It's just so innovative in so many ways, and feels like a Nintendo device the way it just works right of the box. The Guardian is fantastic, and feels like it should have always been there for PSVR.

SideQuest is a must!!! Many games in Beta can be played for free, and if I had a more capable PC, I'd go with Virtual Desktop, as people are reporting great results on Reddit for wireless PC/Steam gameplay.

The quest isn't uncomfortable ay all, and is ideal if you are looking for portability as well as hooking up to PC. Best of both worlds imo
Yeah takes about a minute to get used to the quest. Very comfy to wear
I personally think it is not exactly "uncomfortable" but is quite front-heavy, and it rests a bit hard on my cheeks. The backup battery method strapped to the back strap is proof of this, as it can make wearing the device much more comfortable for a longer period of time. I suggest trying it out.

Psvr was the only other VR headset you had, right?

Are there any good non-game VR "games" or shows? Was browsing Curiosity Stream and found an Egypt doc they have on Steam that lets you walk through tombs. I'd be more interested in something like that than a game I think. Was looking at Steam Index and it's like $1k for the whole deal YOWWWZZAA. Maybe if I get another Trump Check.

On Quest? Yes, definitely. Are you looking for more like 360/180° videos or more like experiences? National Geographic has a good experience called ExploreVR that works really well on Quest, and has a probably more detailed version on Oculus/Steam VR stores. It features Machu Picchu where you take pictures of various features and Penguin Island, Antarctic, where you paddle a kayak and climb a glacier. I'm actually VERY impressed with the image quality on Quest in this experience. I would imagine that the PC version must be pretty darn close to photo-real.

Haven't really looked into any VR systems. The National Geographic one sounds pretty cool though.

The Oculus Quest is kind of a bargain at $400, IMO. It is self contained like its own mini-console, but you can also link it to a PC wired or wirelessly to play games on Steam, including HL:Alyx.

I keep forgetting to put this here, but I will provide links to this new WMR headset, which is a collaboration between Microsoft, HP, and...Valve!

Microsoft/HP tech talk coming up on Thursday, probably showing this thing off.

Best Multiplayer shooter in VR to release on Oculus Quest

Wow, the screen door effect seems to have been pretty much eliminated in the Reverb G2. The image quality looks amazing in this footage filmed through the headset. Can’t wait to see what Sony come up with for PSVR 2
