Official Thread VR Headset

To further this "missing Link" paradox, I've just gotta ask why release AirLink NOW? Why wait until you've decided to dry up your complete PC games lineup to bring native wireless PC_VR to the masses? It's really perplexing, and I cannot use a standard Occam's Razor model based upon logic of what we know.

...and Quest 2 users can breathe a sigh of relief.

I see a lot of people saying on Twitter that they were "burned" by buying Quest 1 before Quest 2 came out. I've been saying all along, that Quest 1 launched with a dated Snapdragon 835 SoC that was in the Galaxy S8 2 years earlier. (Thinking that XR1 must have been the target, but something went wrong) Meanwhile the XR2 in the Quest 2 was state of the art at launch, and specifically designed for AR/VR headsets. I personally believe that if Quest offered an upgraded headset right now, they'd still use the XR2. I just don't think they need to.

It's kind of a shame that there will be games that aren't compatible with Quest 1 only 2.5 years after launch, but what's also interesting, is we haven't even seen a development cycle broken from that original hardware yet.

I bought the Rift S about this time.

I do think the headset is comfortable which is a big reason I chose it, but I guess support for it will be dropping.

My brother bought the Quest 1.

In Carmack's speech at the last Facebook Connect event, he mentioned there was a lot of push back against him trying to make wireless link a thing a while back. The argument against it was there are networking requirements to guarantee a smooth experience. So putting resources into a feature in an uncontrolled environment was deprioritized at the time. Which sucks, but who knows what they allocated those resources to in the meantime instead. I think as Quest 2 + virtual desktop for wireless VR became more popular, they finally decided to pour resources on a solution.

That's my guess anyway. It'll be great to have Asynchronous Spacewarp on wireless link, as VD doesn't have the same kind of deep hardware/software access Oculus does. Can't wait to try it. Been having my kid play Vivecraft on quest 2 wirelessly in living room lately, freaking hilarious. But there's that additional stutter VD has so I'm curious to see if that's fixed now.

I don't feel burned. The tech needed improving but I bet the quest for a lot of people into VR who aren't the sort to be a PC that can run the devices or didn't want to splash out on a PS4 and VR headset.

I'll get a quest 2 at some point but probably not till I've moved house and have more space.

Sounds like they'll give details on this site once available.

Is there a recommended way to record VR? A tutorial I tried suggested OBS, but it seems hacky to me and the picture quality didn't look that great.

I still have the Oculus Rift S and it seems like the console only allows for taking pictures.

I wondered if the basic Game Bar captures both video and audio? Just a pain to take off the headset to operate my keyboard or I guess turn on the Pass thru video.

Just bored at work thinking of stuff to do later. Thought it might be fun post Arizona Sunshine stuff on my Facebook for Halloween. Maybe see if DooM VR works on my setup and post some of that to. I've played that on someone else machine and it's intense lol.

I've used OBS before and found picture quality to be great. It's been a while though so I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help now. I remember there's some settings to prefer high resolution over framerate but don't remember where.

Virtual Reality Oasis is a youtuber I follow and his VR streaming quality is great. Here's a mixed reality tutorial he did.

The Oculus Quest Pro leaked today.

Stay tuned for the "Facebook Connect" (God, I hope they change the name, and maybe even splinter off Oculus) on October 28th.

Notice that the controllers for the Pro no longer have a tracking ring, and now have tiny cameras built into the controllers themselves... You have to wonder if these cameras can also be used for body tracking, at some point. These leaked pictures from a couple weeks ago now seem pretty accurate.

Oculus is playing 5D chess in the VR game. The PSVR 2 won't even be out for a year, but the "hand cages" controllers they showed off earlier this year already seem dated, when Oculus is going with NO TRACKING RING AT ALL! Seriously, I know FB is the double-edge sword of Oculus, but they are just NAILING IT!!! I can't wait to see what the specs of the headset are!

Oculus Quest 2 has been near the top of the Amazon video game charts for Most Wished For and Best Sellers for weeks on end! I think a lot of gamers are in denial of how popular the Quest 2 has become, and sales must be right up they're with (or maybe even between) PlayStation and Xbox.

Amazon's number are probably skewed due to the availability of new gen consoles. Still, Quest 2 demand is very encouraging to see for the VR industry. Facebook's decision to decouple social media accounts from VR is going to help adoption too. After that, who knows?

That Facebook decision is why I'm considering.

Qualcomm's CEO on their Investor Day, November 17th, claimed that they had shipped 10 Million XR2 chipsets to Oculus/Meta.

They are right up there with the consoles, and Quest 2 launched about a month before Xbox Series consoles.

Look at what moved to #1 on the best sellers list on Amazon. This is including hardware, software, accessories, and gift cards! It appears 3 times in the top 100. Also the 256GB model, and a bundle with carrying case.
