If it's like Contrast, it's open world but story driven. You're able to go wherever, but have directives of what to do next to further the story in Contrast.Open world? That's kinda wierd for this type game. I'd expect a linear story driven experience.

Spent almost 9 hours so far on the game... and have just uninstalled it.
Loved that start. The art style is great, it's oozing character from every pore, and the news paper articles are great... the concept is brilliant.
And then it's all a mess.
The inventory, quests, world, lore, design, NPC's... disclosable. Once it becomes open world, it feels like a s***ty mod from the early 2000's. I'm not going going to play through a procedurally generated world once, if it doesn't feel like it's a real, bespoke, breathing entity.
It's early, but two quests glitched within 30 minutes, and diseases/hunger/thirst were just stupid. Really, stupid.
There's almost no food, so you have to eat rotten food, which makes you sick so you have to take pills, which makes you vulnerable to disease, which makes you thirsty, which lowers your stamina, and that makes you sleepy.
I hope this is a bait and switch.
I started the game again after the update, and... it's still bad.I had a quest glitch early too. I think that's pretty common.
I kind of agree as well about the countdowns on hunger/thirst being too fast, although thirst is pretty much never a problem since it's insanely easy to get several canteens and you've got a water spout right by the hideout. Food was what kept being my challenge.
I probably had about the same total playtime as you - a couple of Saturday afternoons I had a chance to play a few hours while the youngest was down for his alleged "nap" but mostly just played in his room. I did end up getting through the booth where you need the power cell and onto the next area, but at that point I was pretty much decided I was going to go there no matter what and was near death from fatigue (if that's possible at least) and I think I picked up a disease as well. I kind of stopped paying attention, honestly.
I think right now the game's probably not worth what I paid for it, but I do believe that when they finish it I'll play through it properly again. There's potential, and the intro was outstanding, but it's kind of hard to set up a story like that and then not allow us to progress it. The game play and NPC interaction isn't strong enough on its own to really warrant spending the time to play through any more without the story. But that's Game Preview games for you.

Once you make it over the bridge/, check point, you will get a disease. What does the disease do to you? Adds another counter that youll probably ignore.
The main pump that you repair causes all nearby NPC's to kill you for some reason.
NPC's build traps in their houses, but if you walk around the!, They're willing to chill and hangout with you, but if you break a price of string in their front door (while their house has a giant hole in the wall...), they'll treat you worse than Chris Brown treats his girlfriend's.
The opening story is cool. But it really does fall to pieces.
I'm gonna give it another go over the weekend... maybe. So, how is this game?

The developers have shown brilliance in places. It literally reminded me of the first time I played BioShock at first.
Fingers crossed!
Don't get your hopes up though man. It was a steep fall from grace after the start...I liked what I got to play of it at PAX, which was a whole 10-15 mins.
Yeah I just tried it again, and there's still no story. I'll be back in another ,6 months lol.Wait until story mode is actually added before calling it a fall from grace. it was only 50% complete when it launched

Story comes when the game is officially released

Since 2015, we have made clear that the price would increase as we approach the final release, and that time has - finally - come. On August 16, the price for the game will become US$50.99.
