We Happy Few

Definitely need to sort out the food and water system. It goes down way to quickly.

I heard the game wasn't what was really shown at E3. People expected a story driven linear BioShock type game, but it's like an open world survival game? Still plenty of time for them change things but i don't know.

Open world? That's kinda wierd for this type game. I'd expect a linear story driven experience.

It's always been advertised as one and sites put up plenty of gameplay videos at E3.

The finished game will have a proper story as well.

If it's like Contrast, it's open world but story driven. You're able to go wherever, but have directives of what to do next to further the story in Contrast.

I always figured it'd be mostly open world since it's coming to preview. Just don't feel like a strictly linear game would make sense to have a preview.

Dan from GB proving once again to be a poor journalist and gamer....

Who knows. I guess it's going to be heavy on crafting and building things like a Minecraft or ARK. Just doesn't seem like what was advertised at E3. Maybe i missed something though.

Spent almost 9 hours so far on the game... and have just uninstalled it.

Loved that start. The art style is great, it's oozing character from every pore, and the news paper articles are great... the concept is brilliant.

And then it's all a mess.

The inventory, quests, world, lore, design, NPC's... disclosable. Once it becomes open world, it feels like a s***ty mod from the early 2000's. I'm not going going to play through a procedurally generated world once, if it doesn't feel like it's a real, bespoke, breathing entity.

It's early, but two quests glitched within 30 minutes, and diseases/hunger/thirst were just stupid. Really, stupid.

There's almost no food, so you have to eat rotten food, which makes you sick so you have to take pills, which makes you vulnerable to disease, which makes you thirsty, which lowers your stamina, and that makes you sleepy.

I hope this is a bait and switch.

I had a quest glitch early too. I think that's pretty common.

I kind of agree as well about the countdowns on hunger/thirst being too fast, although thirst is pretty much never a problem since it's insanely easy to get several canteens and you've got a water spout right by the hideout. Food was what kept being my challenge.

I probably had about the same total playtime as you - a couple of Saturday afternoons I had a chance to play a few hours while the youngest was down for his alleged "nap" but mostly just played in his room. I did end up getting through the booth where you need the power cell and onto the next area, but at that point I was pretty much decided I was going to go there no matter what and was near death from fatigue (if that's possible at least) and I think I picked up a disease as well. I kind of stopped paying attention, honestly.

I think right now the game's probably not worth what I paid for it, but I do believe that when they finish it I'll play through it properly again. There's potential, and the intro was outstanding, but it's kind of hard to set up a story like that and then not allow us to progress it. The game play and NPC interaction isn't strong enough on its own to really warrant spending the time to play through any more without the story. But that's Game Preview games for you.

I started the game again after the update, and... it's still bad.

Once you make it over the bridge/, check point, you will get a disease. What does the disease do to you? Adds another counter that youll probably ignore.

The main pump that you repair causes all nearby NPC's to kill you for some reason.

NPC's build traps in their houses, but if you walk around the!, They're willing to chill and hangout with you, but if you break a price of string in their front door (while their house has a giant hole in the wall...), they'll treat you worse than Chris Brown treats his girlfriend's.

The opening story is cool. But it really does fall to pieces.

Oh, they already updated it? I hadn't realized that.

Yeah, I got the disease too (I think on the way back out) of that first checkpoint because I wasn't smart enough to avoid what I was previously smart enough to avoid because I think there was a sign or something mentioning disease. Or something. That's kind of why I went even more just "I'm going to keep going until I die because I'm going to anyway".

I'm probably going to wait a good while until I play it again, at least until they've got the whole three character story set up ready (I think that's what the final goal was).

Wait until story mode is actually added before calling it a fall from grace. it was only 50% complete when it launched

Yeah I just tried it again, and there's still no story. I'll be back in another ,6 months lol.

That saves me a little time too. I think the story has potential, so hopefully they deliver on that front.

Since we launched our Kickstarter and released the game on Early Access, We Happy Few has been priced at US$29.99. We have never put it on sale because we believe it isn’t fair for someone to get the game at a lower price than a Kickstarter backer or an Early Access backer while the game is still in development. Since 2015, we have made clear that the price would increase as we approach the final release, and that time has - finally - come. On August 16, the price for the game will become US$50.99.

We will explain everything in more detail on the 16th. As you can imagine, there is more to the story, and we are looking forward to sharing all the juicy details with you.We always do our best to be transparent with you guys, so we felt it was important to provide this pricing information with ample time for you to make a decision. And, just to be clear, if you are a Kickstarter backer or Early Access player, this change does not affect you.

http://compulsiongames.com/en/news/1...ore-the-plunge

Last week we posted our first message that the Early Access discount price was reaching its full price on the 16th. We saw a lot of misinformation going around, and wanted to make sure we cleared things up:

  • The full game is not releasing on the 16th. We are releasing the last major update on the 16th, and then we’ll be working full time on the story and the 1.0 release. It will still be some time away. As we’ve said before, maintaining the Early Access build and the story build as separate entities is difficult, and becoming unworkable. We can now concentrate all of our efforts on making the story the best it can be.
  • We wanted to let you know about the price in advance because it is the right thing to do. We’ll explain more next week, but for now the main reason we announced the price was to make sure no one felt like they were being snuck up on.
  • The final game will contain the full story we have been working on for the past 3 years. A lot of gamers who haven’t played the game think it is currently just a survival sandbox, completely unaware that it contain around 90 fully voiced over encounters or that you can remove the survival settings. The game has changed a great deal since the Early Access release, so if you see people around talking about “just another survival game”, we’d appreciate if you pointed them in the direction of recent changes :)
  • The new price has ruffled some feathers. It might not have been obvious how much we have been growing as a studio and how much the scope of the game has changed. But the game has evolved in alignment with the public’s expectations. We cannot always show what is going on behind closed doors studio and the game has become so much bigger since we first announced the project. We will now be able to make the best game that we can, and we’re very excited about what’s coming.

[snip]

That's actually a logical, well-reasoned explanation for the decision they've made and I'm sure the Internet will appreciate the honesty and logic of the statement and will in no way set the whole damned world on fire and, wow, it's kind of hot and flamey in here, but I'm sure there's no relation.

Games come a long way since when it first launched on EA with you no longer about to die from thirst 2 minutes into playing.

I need to remember to download this onto the X and try it again someday, once I get a chance to get through everything else that I need to play on the X.
