What can I get out of "next gen" if I'm poor?

This is the great thing about the last few console releases, there's all sorts of price points for various gamers. PC has been doing this for years, but this is sort of "new" to consoles. There's nothing that I can play on a launch next gen console that you can't on anything from the past gen, including vanilla consoles.

I mean it isn't like we're going to be playing all these new games you don't have access to.

The TV is definitely where you feel the price adding up. The real cost isn't the $500 console, but the TV to do it justice.

I'm at a point in my life where I gave up golf (I had all sorts of back problems that magically went away once I stopped hacking at a little white ball) and hockey (my 3rd head injury made me re-prioritize that), so gaming is really my main hobby now. When I was younger and into many other things, gaming was always part of my life but there were times I spent a lot less than I do now.

You're not missing anything. There's zero reason to upgrade other than wanting to. Neither console has given us a reason to do so immanently.
Right. If you are unable to save enough money over time, just skip it. If you really want to upgrade just go bit by bit and aim for the TV first. Honestly you can find a capable TV for under $800 though. It won’t be high end but it will be 4K, HDR capable, and a huge jump over 1080p you can enjoy immediately.

I'm poor now too.

Do you have a lot of older gaming related items? I technically haven't bought a game in years. What I've been doing is slowly selling off my gaming collection over the years on eBay and buying games with that. I had a collection of over 25K of games, consoles, accessories, magazines, guides, etc. all in mint condition. It was pointless having entire closets, cabinets, drawers and bookshelves of unused items, so I started selling things off to support my gaming needs now. That way, I don't feel bad wasting the small amount of $ I make now on games, instead of the essentials in life.

I've kept most of the stuff from Xbox and newer except for GC and PS2 since my Wii and PS3 plays those anyway.

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, and also sorry if this is just some dude whining.

But I've never felt like this before about "next gen" consoles and my finances.

I have a 1080p tv. I have an entry level receiver that has 4k passthrough, and I have an Xbox One.

I have no money. This will be the first console release since the OG Xbox where I literally could not afford to "jump in"

I have a "gaming PC" with a 1070ti, plenty of RAM and solid state drives. But I found out I'm not big on PC gaming, desktop should last me the next 10 years for regular stuff though so not regretting it.

But what would be the point of getting a PS5 or Xbox series X if I'm playing at 1080p on a TV?

I'd need a new TV and I'd be looking at a Sony HF950? (just an example) at 55", That's $1500 with tax if I find a good deal. I'd then also need to upgrade my A/V reciever to a current one, low end. That's probably another $400, and then one of the consoles. So let's add another $700.

Just to jump in. We're talking near $3000.

Will I be ok just sticking with my Xbox One at 1080p? Or will it hit a point where I can't get great experiences from new games because of my gear?

Anyone else feeling this? Just curious. I'd usually be able to swing the latest console, and perhaps I could, but if I can't afford a new TV and A/V is it going to matter if I go in for one of the new consoles?

Thanks.
Keep working and save up. Games are cross gen for probably 2 years. So most everything Series X/S gets, Xbox One will get. Remember, there are probably close to 200 million consoles between the Xbox One and PS4 out there. Third party developers will be making games for those two consoles for quite some time. It's money in the bank for them.

You will miss out on faster load times and quick resume. Keep your TV, keep gaming on Xbox One, and you will also be cross platform with Series X. You won't lose any friends being on the Xbox One. And when you do jump in, you will have free access to all the Series X enhancements 2 years from now if that is when you choose to jump in.

Nope. They are still developing for BASE Xbox One and BASE PS4. Those 2 consoles couldn't keep up with a 1070 if they tried. My point stands. At the outset of next gen as long as cross platform games are still a thing...he will be fine with his PC setup.

The next gen consoles will smoke his gpu. | better versions of games.
If he's looking for years to come type investing he should do the console/s and a good display.

Just buy a good TV and your next gen console of life, you really don’t need a new receiver, just get some good headphones.... granted it’s nice to not only hear the sound but feel it through speakers but whatever floats your boat yo

Ok, maybe what I'm really wondering is if I were to get a XBsX or a PS5, but still using my 1080p TV, well, surely it isn't all about resolution right?

Best response so far was about everything just loading faster, snappier, hopefully those details at 1080p are just so easy for the new consoles and hopefully they develop the games to really push 1080p output.

I think I freaked out a bit about the cost of getting the most out of the new consoles right away. If I can get my hands on an Xbox Series X I can't imagine it won't feel amazing even at 1080p.

Sorry for going a bit nutty everyone and thanks for all the support etc.

Have you considered a series s?

the recent kotaku interview confirms my theory about the s, Phil mentioned that some games actually load faster on the s because of asset size and resolution (or something along those lines)

The price difference isn't big enough. If I'm going to put down a sizable amount of money on a new console, I'm going for the best if it's only 1 or 2 hundred dollars more. Why wouldn't the series X be able to do everything the S does and more? That doesn't make sense to me that the S would actually be better at anything vs the X. Perhaps at 1080p they would be equal, but how would the S be better for 1080p other than compromising on price vs future potential?

smaller res and textures are smaller in size, so you could then load more assets.... starseeker Godsmack and a few others in this forum could probably fill ya in better on how it works

Man, I hate that I left out that "a" when I said I have f***ing job.

LOL.

Can anyone please tell me that Xbox series X will be awesome even on a 1080p system? (also PS5 and whatever latest GPU on a PC for example)

I'm asking someone to enable me.....

ENABLE ME! Also I've only got one "client" Swede and that is my life-partner. NOT INTEREST$ED if that's what you're implying.
Seems to me a Series S would do pretty well for your set up. You could also do the xbox pay as you go thingies that's like 25 bucks a month including gamepass and xbl.

If you are strapped for cash, I doubt you'll be getting a 4k tv any time soon, a Series X would be wasted without one. At least with the S, its 200 bucks cheaper (significant) and you can play new gen games on it.

By going S, you get a saving at launch, but forgo backward compatibility, Discount game on disc and smaller disc space. It’s is actually worst from a financial standpoint.
i think series S is a bad idea, and will result in many buyer‘s remorse.

just watch, prices may get discounted like 30 to 50 bucks come winter holiday and a new series XD variant at or around e3 with them saying “we heard you, here’s the same great power of the X but a hundred bucks less”

Just upgrade as you are financially able, no rush. I bought the Sony 55" x950g last Black Friday and have no plans to upgrade to any other tv for the next 5 years. I don't care about 120fps on next gen consoles because I believe 4k/60 fps will be the target standard this coming gen for the newer graphically intense games. 120 fps are more for lesser graphical fidelity games which I most likely won't play as much. My console is for my single player experience. My PC is for my competitive gaming experience which I have a 144hz monitor for.

Well, I would definitely go with the series X first and then a new TV and then a new A/V so I'm totally up to date and can do the 120fps thing.

If I get a good tax return, and also at my work we get our profit share every April (which is also when I get my tax return) hopefully combined I can swing next years Sony 900 whatever 55" and hopefully it natively supports the 120fps thing (the current one is promising a firmware update no? I don't necessarily trust that will work out, maybe it will)

Hmmm, I'll have to see. I get 20% off coupons every November so If I can somehow snag a series X with 20% off I'll probably do it, if not I'll wait until next November.

The pay as you go thing is interesting and I'll have to look into how that is for Canada, but I'm probably just going to wait a year. I honestly only play Red Dead Online pretty much exclusively if I'm being honest (hey I love trotting around that world on my horse, very relaxing I don't even get into it with other players)

Thanks for so much advice guys and can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on launch day :)

The 900 is a good choice, the update is just rolling out... the only issue atm seem to be whether it’ll support do my vision at 120 hertz 4k...so far it’s a tv I’d recommend. VaLLiancE could fill ya in on the nitty gritty details, he’s own it since launch (more or less)
