Nintendo has never, ever been able to properly figure out online play. The current system could be their best stab at it yet, but it’s still rife with problems (voice chat via a phone app, a phone app!) and it’s miles behind PSN and Xbox Live. The lower cost of the service doesn’t make up for the fact that the service is terrible, and for whatever reason, Nintendo simply cannot get a handle on online gaming the way its rivals have.

  • Nintendo gets an online service that actually works consistently for a change and has all the features you’d expect
  • Microsoft gets to dramatically expand their playerbase to all Switch users for additional revenue (split with Nintendo, I’d guess) and gets another selling point over PlayStation
  • Players essentially get access to crossplay on every single title released going forward, if it’s on Switch, since both Switch and Xbox are using XBL. Xbox players can play with friends on Switch, Switch players can play with Xbox players and also finally have an online service that is not awful
I have to believe this is at least being considered, if not outright planned. In this era of cooperation, it just makes too much sense, and short of Microsoft just flat-out buying Nintendo (I’m not gonna rule it out), this would take their newly cooperative spirit to a level never thought possible before.
 
That doesn't really seem anywhere near as beneficial to Nintendo unless they feel they can't build an online service at all which I doubt is the case.
 
Not surprising. After all, didn't Nintendo and Sony have a collaboration to create a console until Sony forced the disc media on the design? That caused the split. Nintendo is probably foaming at the mouth to get their hooks into XBL and MS prob as well. It would bring together MILLIONS into an online community like no other. Cross play on all titles between the two is a real possibility now and I see that as a huge selling point going forward for MS. I think MS and Nintendo are taking the dagger that Sony is holding against crossplay and turning it back on them.
 
Nintendos online is terrible. Xbox's is the best so if they get live to switch it would be great. But would Xbox owners need a 2nd account or pay a little extra to have live on both consoles?

But why would you buy an xbox if Nintendo has both the online infrastructure, features and services and the exclusives? There is literally no reason to.

There would still be the exclusives to each system. Halo isn’t going to appear on the Switch and Mario isn’t gonna come to the XB. Prolly just a shared online infrastructure, or backend, with the benefit of relative ease of cross play for third parties (and first parties too if they wanted, racing, fighting games?), shares accounts across both ecosystems, etc.

Why the f*** would a real gamer want to stream their games on a Switch for 720p? Lag, queues, horrible frame rates, s*** graphics. Most of us would want to play it on the console.

Streaming games? LOL....lame.
