What is frame rate in gaming?

A good read.

Framerate definitely is more than a number. Many factors come into play:
-game type
-player preference
-stability (bouncing between 60-40 may not be as "good" - IE game type)

This gen has taught me one thing - that I was a bit of a 60fps snob. A game running at 30fps - that being a STABLE and steady 30 - can be a good gaming experience.

There's just so much going on as opposed to just a number.

If you can't do steady 60 FPS, then don't do it and go down to 30. Otherwise keep 60fps and enjoy the superior fluidity. Not sure how people don't see the difference.

Watch in full screen at 60FPS in youtube.

A measuring stick for the e-peen? Oh wait, this was serious? 60fps or unplayable, i would absolutely never buy a game or even play one if a friend let me borrow it unless it was locked at 60fps. How could anyone soil themselves with such peasantry.

Can not see the slightest bit of difference.

I knew which one was 60fps right away before it was even indicated on screen. I think it's that obvious.

Agreed.

I remember back over at TXB, being chewed down because I said 30 fps locked for Dead Space on pc was ok, because the game was slow enough, that it still felt buttery smooth.

30fps games this gen feel smoother too. I think a lot of 30fps games last gen were not as stable.

Forza Horizon 2 kind of cured me of my 60fps crush. It felt very smooth to me. My only gripe was at very high speeds I could notice it a tiny bit, but not bad.

I don't know, imo, DS felt buttery smooth on pc last gen. I think it really depends on the game. 30 fps is 30 fps no matter how you cut it, but in certain games, 30 fps won't hamper the enjoyment of a game.
For example, imo, fast games like CoD need it, but slower games like DS really didn't matter much.

The only way I can see people not being able to tell the difference is they're not viewing it in 60fps.

Probably, also I notice youtube sometimes doesn't change your settings right away even if you pick 1080, 60fps, etc. I wonder if it downgrades if the video is too slow. I notice things I watch don't always look like they should.

It takes time for the buffer to catch up.

Crazy how some people can find it so obvious and others do not.

Because I do not look for it. I just watch the videos.

IMO, 60FPS is a pointless endeavour, unless the game is a sports title, twitch based shooter, or racer. Also, FYI, if you play P'CARS in bonnet or bumper cam the 30 v 60FPS is more telling.

All other things being equal, higher frames the better.

The faster paced and twitchy the game is, the better the game feels with higher frame rates.

Slower paced games can get away with lower frames. Anyone play old ass computer games in the 80s? Turned based games ran at literally a few frames per second. Zero animations and delayed response to keyboard presses, but it's turn based so who cares if it runs slow like in Sargon III.

Anything under 30.... ok maybe ~28.... will feel sluggish, especially if the game requires fast camera panning.

A solid 60 makes everything seem smoother, more responsive and choppy camera panning is gone. It's so smooth that devs don't have to add in god awful motion blur to hide the sloppy feel from camera shifting in low frame rate games.

Actually, in this video, its quite obvious, for me at least.

I think you may be focusing on the car, which actually do not look that much different in both 30 & 60fps, which is the only explaination I can think of for you not to notice the difference (if not technical reason that the video cannot play in 60fps). Look ahead of the car, at the trees & environment ahead, & the difference between 30 & 60 is very apparent. 30fps has that stutter effect, more apparent when the car goes a round a corner.

In some videos, it hard to tell 30fps from 60, but this one is quite obvious. But then, I cannot speak for everyone.

We are wasting your time explaining.
In these forums 720p,900p,1080p and 30-60fps show no difference.
Point out how beyond silly people are and either the thread get closed or admins ban you from the threads.

That's ironic...considering you were one of the dudes saying that BF4 on pc was nearly identical to console.

In that same vein of thought, many believe that 900p vs 1080p are nearly identical to the naked eye, and that 30 fps vs 60 fps doesn't change the experience much.

The line of thinking that some use on you, is nearly identical to what you've used on others.

1080p = 900p @ x distance from display. X relative to size of display and your vision.

120fps or you ain't livin....

Owning BF4 on PC and PS4 they are almost identical with the 900p PS4 version looking softer missing a couple details here and there and a worse fps.
PS4 version being better for my tastes due to FULL controller support,no web browser match making and better community for my tastes(because of more friends to play with)

Its always noticeable its just in some cases more noticeable in some examples then others.
ie Killer Instinct 900p looks close to 1080p and doesn't suffer from being softer like BF4 PS4 and RYSE XBO for example.

.

I remember that clearly now that you bring it up. He was defending console 900p versus 1080p(AND higher fps) PC BF4, yet now when the X1 witcher 3 is 900p and ps4 is 1080p, its a big difference. lol.

I know exactly what to look for and what the differences are, but I like I said, I do not specifically look for it. If you look for it then you are bound to notice it.

What I do, is I look where I would be looking if I was playing the game. In the case of project P'cars, that would be the road in front of me, or the apex as I approach a corner. I am too busy trying to play the game to really notice.

If you do the same video with FIFA 15 or COD, then my answer would be different, because I play those games differently.
