What the heck is with XCOM 2's difficulty spike?

Why is XCOM 2 super difficult, even on easy mode? Or do I just suck?

No it's not you. At least when I played it at launch it was considerably more difficult than its predecessor. I believe there is an article out somewhere that addressed this.

Hell I found Xcom 1 too hard. Maybe? Guess I had it on medium/regular but kind of got turned off by the trial and error. Part of that was probably just me wanting to have every one live for every mission, although I do remember not being able to proceed past one of those world events because I didn't do it just right and ran out of time. Think at that point I just lost interest. I have nothing against the genre though.

I managed to beat it on normal mode but it was a struggle for some missions. And the very last mission, if you don't have psychic soldiers it's next to impossible. I didn't have psychic soldiers so I know what I'm talking about here.

Oh yeah I remember the very last mission of the game, much times had to reload the save game.

Yep. I remember going to read some tips online and every one just said if you don't have this list of abilities on psychic soldiers then you are in trouble. It took hours and hours to beat and I eventually only got lucky when the avatar teleported right in front me!

I went back then and trained up some psychic soldiers and and played it again. beat the thing in two hours. Lol.

I think without the
Void Rift
I would not be able to manage the last mission, as very easy got surrounded by enemies.

Just putting it in spoiler tag, just to be sure, may not be much of a spoiler.

It is incredibly hard, and I am a long time Xcom vet from the very first game in the 90s (which was hard).

I got this on sale last fall and I literally cannot get past the early missions. The first one is easy on regular. From that point on though? Once you hit a "timed" mission I am done. I get that you have to take out the mind control sectoid, but even if you shoot him multiple times he might not go down, and heaven forbid if you get a bad roll, save and reload. In past games you sit back and plan your attacks, but with the time limit on most it is impossible to do that. Get into a prolonged firefight and not only are you badly outgunned, but you'll simply run out of time anyway.

I shelved the game honestly as it was simply kicking my butt.

I had the PC version and had the same issue. It was frustrating as f*ck when my dude was literally two feet away but still managed to miss the shot and that just did it for me. Stopped the game for a loooong time then went back to it after it had been updated so much and it was fine. Maybe the console version will go through the same.

I was loving the game, then I hit a mission, Blacksite with the vial, and just got creamed. Restarted the game and changed all my upgrades, got farther, but then realized still no match for the final 8 enemies that drop in! I had been getting a lot of flawless and excellent missions up to that mission (thanks to saving of course) so I feel kind of lost what to do. Love the gameplay, just don't have the time to re-play sections over and over and over.

Who knows. Some games just like to lull you into a sense of security, then slap you around when you least expect it.

I don't mind difficult, but the problem is I feel I just need to keep saving and reloading and just hope to "get lucky" to win.

When I get a bad roll in a past game I think "uh oh". Getting a bad roll in this game and it is save/reload because your squad just got wiped.

It doesn't help that the reloads take awhile either. Seems to highlight the frustration.
